In this episode of Dentside Depot, Aaron goes over the practicality of driving a classic truck every day. Does it make sense or should you just drive a new truck instead?

Its the aged old question, can one drive a classic on a daily basis from a practical standpoint?
@blaydCA2 күн бұрын
Everyone does in South East Oregon. They're usually hauling cattle or equipment. Plenty of folks do in Southern California as well, but they're usually creampuffs that never work.
@erikswensen425Күн бұрын
I think one could drive one on a regular day to day basis. I think it's a matter of starting off on the right foot, and by that, I mean a relatively solid body and frame. If it's a truck with a 302 or 300, it makes it easier for modern common factory parts, such as overdrive transmissions, especially ones with transfer cases. The second easiest would probably be a 360/390 because you could use the nv4500 behind a stock bell housing and gain an overdrive. Holley Snipers have been a great help to making more classic vehicles easier to daily as well with getting decent mileage

I have an 86 Bronco as my daily driver. Has been for the past 4 years. Has been super reliable. Maintenance is very cheap. Collector insurance is very cheap. Only downside is the lower fuel economy but if you take a truck payment out of the equation it’s still much cheaper. I’ll drive a classic over a new one any day. The fun factor is priceless! 😊

I had a guy buy and entire 10r140 trans off me just for the valve body sensor module because Ford told him 6 months to get the part. It was on his 4 year old dump truck, he was not happy!
@steveziegler70142 күн бұрын
I owned a 1977 F150 4x4 that the previous owner installed an aftermarket cruise control. It had a sensor mounted on the rear drive shaft and a pickup sensor on the underside of the cab. It worked great until I overloaded the box with HEAVY pressure treated wood for a deck I was building. It sacked out the suspension and the two sensors attempted to occupy the same space. Unfortunately no more cruise after that. I sold that truck in the early 90's for $1200, should have kept it!

I'd like to mention the 2 transfer cases used back then. The NP 205 the part-time and the NP 203 the full time unit, the less desirable because it was essentially an all wheel drive from the factory. For that reason people used to either convert them over to part-time operation or ditch them and put in a 205 instead. Companies such as rough country offered a set of manual hub locks for the conversion. One time I read a vintage ad for rough country that advertised a set of hub locks and showed on Arab that said "Rough Country how could you do this to us"
@DentsideDepot2 күн бұрын
Absolutely, the Ford version of the NP205 married case in the 70s is the Holy Grail of transfer cases. They just arent fun to take apart!
@malcolmhammond21352 күн бұрын
I’ve used both cases extensively and for general use I definitely prefer the np203, smoother and has great traction in wet. Needs to be a late 70s version though as they improved the chain and strengthened the differential carrier in the later ones. I drove a part time converted np203 bronco for a while and kept records on fuel economy before converting it back to full time. No noticeable decrease in fuel economy with the part time, about 10 mpg city driving. Now I’m building a 78 f350 crewcab which I’m converting to 4wd with all Dentside parts and including a 203. It was hard to find one that hadn’t been converted to part time.

2:44 Another thing to add is that older cars actually had room to get things done, you could stick not only your hands but also your whole arms in under the hood. Nowadays the engine bays are very small and the engine is halfway under the dashboard making it that much harder to get at, And often have a pointless amount of plastic covers and a 1.5 inch service gap almost everywhere. Ive heard of engines where the parts that break the most are the hardest to get at, Such as the starter being under the intake manifold or INSIDE THE TRANSMISSION, And alternators being at the most inconvenient angle. My father bought an old falcon on his tour of Australia, the starter was right next to the exhaust, as expected, it got cooked, He would have to remove the starter and bang it on the ground every time he wanted to start it. The engine later blew up because the mechanics told him not to worry about the noisy valve lifter

Old trucks work if you have a backup ride. The either suck fuel, or a lot of fuel. Use only when you are making money. Never buy one that was worked hard. Dodge beats Ford anyday in the 60's and the 70's. My 1969 D300 was the toughest, most reliable truck I ever owned, It rusted out and disintegrated though. My 1990 F250 pulls my Bobcat and trailer with ease. It's a newer truck than yours but I consider it a classic. The old Fords with carburetors and a manual transmission will run pretty much forever. They are just super rust buckets like the Dodge was. The late 80's and 1990's trucks rust a whole lot less. I live in Miami every vehicle has heated seats and steering wheels. LOL! The mileage on my truck is better than my friend's brand new F250 Diesel and I don't have to hassle with DEF. I have never been to a mechanic so classic is all I want. Yes the old trucks are far better looking than the blacked out junk they build today!

Fewer Dodge trucks because the old power wagons had the smoothness of a wagon. Going hunting, If you got on the backroads you couldn’t wait to get out and walk. One of my brothers had a ‘76 Ford, the other had a ‘76 Dodge both short bed half tons. Both with 4 speed transmissions. The Ford was far better riding, shifting, and handling even the interior on the Ford was better it was plush. Very plain interior in the Dodge the dashboard in the Dodge was as though it was going to fall off (not solid), both had 360 cubic inch engines and the Dodge had definitely more power IMO. Growing up in the 70s, Ford and Chevy trucks were all anybody talked about. Personally I wanted a square body Chevy. Finally got my first 4x4 in ‘79, a Ford a ‘77 XLT 400 ci. Damn I miss that truck.

I haven't seen a new TRUCK in 30 years. Just ugly cars that lets your luggage get stolen.

The new chevys are really among the most ugly trucks ever built. I like the look of the dodges, but now they only have a straight 6 for the 1500s. Super dutys are good but they are way overpriced

If it doesn't have an 8' bed it's an SUV.

I like my short bed F150 but if I needed it for real work the 8' bed is the way to go, especially if it's an F250.
