@veggie42 Alan Wilder did not leave Depeche Mode for another group. Martin, Dave, and Andy just decided to go on without Alan, mostly (basically he aired his issues about not getting enough credit, or an equal share, or sometimes just not much creative input. and they together with Alan decided he would not continue with the band). After a short time he helped put together the music project 'Recoil'. He has put out a few albums with them.

That’s why I love Depeche Mode 1982-1993 era, only because of Alan. he seems to be quiet and inconspicuous, but we all know - he's the boss ;)

He never wanted to be the boss. He just wanted to create good music. He succeeded. Fletch didn't like it though. Being a successful 'clapper', he wasn't happy with anyone within the band who could perform more complicated tasks than that.

I know it's a cliche, but I'll never get over Alan - People can say 'get over it' or 'move on' as much as they want; I hate that people think they have the right to dictate how other people think or feel. I wish I didn't miss him - my life's bad enough as it is. But I can't stand 21st-century DM. I saw them for the first and only time in 2009 and felt utterly miserable: even before the concert, I saw the merch and just wished I was watching the WVT. As for the concert, I found myself looking at the ground in sadness because I couldn't help imagining that there was a time when I'd have been watching Alan. (I hate how the band installed Peter as a permanent replacement. Much as Alan leaving upsets me, I think I'd have found it easier and may have gone to subsequent shows if the band had varied their use of session musicians.) Alan's role in the studio has been talked about a lot, and rightly so, but I miss him most as a live performer. He was so cool and handsome, his keyboard playing was mesmerising, and his vocals harmonised so well with Martin and Dave's. Given DM's success as a stadium rock act, they're clearly a massive commercial force and obviously doing something right. But this rock/cabaret version of DM with permanent session musos and Dave's stage persona is so cringe-inducing and far-removed from the band I loved. I know-they've 'evolved.' Unfortunately, what they've evolved into isn't to my taste. People who saw tours like 'Black Celebration' and 'World Violation' are SO lucky. 😢

It's hard to get over it because of the massive difference in the sound since he left. While each album post-Wilder has had one or two really good songs, as a whole, the albums have fell flat. We'll always have to live with "what if".

Martin is a superb songwriter, but no one can write gems consistently. Alan was a master of creating the backdrop to Martin's songs and he elevated great songs into iconic ones and so-so songs into good ones. Of course with Dave's delivery, one of the best front men in the history of bands with that powerful, seductive voice, and you have a product that is much, much greater than their individual talents. None of their individual works - Recoil, Martin's solo works, Dave's solo and collabs - they don't remotely come close to what DM achieves when all 3 are contributing...and that is the greatest shame. Listen to In Chains...album version and then Wilder's version.

He was an absolute genius and the magic spark in the lineup. Alan's musical contributions is what made DM, the DM we all love and cherish. The moment he left the group, DM lost everything that made the band. He was the glue that kept the band together. Yes, they all contributed in their own ways, but Alan WAS the Depeche Mode. Even in their darkest hours, they produced their best work. He will always be DM and DM is not the same without him.

If Martin was dM's lyrics, Alan Wilder was dM's sound, a man too talented for whom he was not given his true place in the group, creator of one of their greatest hits, "Enjoy the Silence" and their last masterpiece, SOFAD, you are irreplaceable, Mr. Alan Wilder.

Riddle me this, how is there supposed to ever be a cooler, finer band for a young girl or lad, say 14 to 17, who just discovered that music is divine and everything, than Depeche Mode? I know they were for me, saw them at age 14 here in Vienna in 1988, my first concert by myself and i found my first group of friends through DM, by dressing alike and well, playing a few of their songs at a party. What a grandiose time it was, and this 101 vhs tape, man, i played it on rotation basically. Had 27 records of them, drove to Munich and London to get a particular EP that i could not get here. Had, you ask why had? Well, my dear mother gave my entire collection of the most wonderful music of that era away when i decided to go to the USA for a while with my 1st band....you know, the cure, Jesus & Mary Chain, Sisters, The Mission, etc.....just gave it away.....oh what i'd do to have that record collection back in my hands......

He was very talented and I can see how he must have felt to have put more time and effort in than the others. He just didn't feel appreciated. All of the together were magic!
