101 is peak Depeche Mode. Right before they blew-up worldwide and then spiraled out of control in a haze of drugs and craziness which ultimately saw Alan Wilder departing the group. 101 was when DM was a well-oiled machine performing at the height of their musical prowess.

Agreed- 101 was such a great time for the band as a whole. But I also wished they had officially documented the World Violation Tour in 1990. For me, Violator was such a classic and their last album with the true DM sound. SOFD was great as well, but so different from before.

Totally. MftM and 101 put them on top of the world after (finally) conquering the U.S. mainstream radios, then Violator and SoF&D defined their sound for the next decade. Even with all the internal turmoil and the substance abuse drama, they managed to pull IMO the 3 best albums of their catalog at that time.

I got to see this tour live in person in December 1987. One of the best concerts I’ve ever been to. The energy in this video is just 1% of the energy experienced by seeing it in person.

Yes, me also. This still sends shivers down my spine. The classic DM line up ;began life in early 1982. Within in 18 months, the live concerts went from tepid to electrifying. I saw them in Germany in 1984, and it was obvious that the band were going to be huge. Martin Gore's songs coupled with the Martin Gore/Alan Wilder arrangements were perfect for the live stage. The 101 concert was the exact point when the band arrived on the world stage. Right up to, and including, the Devotional Tour, they remained one of the premier live bands on the planet. They are quite good now, but most fans agree that the above was the really golden era.

@@Nigel-wu5lj Yes, I am sure you are right. Especially newer fans, enjoy the concerts. I have seen them, myself, a few times in recent years. Lively, loud and very enjoyable . Previously however, the keyboarding was perfection, it is not now. There was keyboarding perfection between Alan Wilder and Martin Gore. That has gone now, and it shows. Check out the earlier concert DVDs. 101 and Devotional.

I beg to differ, Micheal.. DM started out of the gate as a super group w/Vince Clarke and the amazing dance hit, "Just Can't Get Enough." Catching Up With DM and the People are People compilation are also definate high points. Now when I heard and saw the artistic video for Shake the Disease (It's Called a Heart is a rad video too) as I was washing dishes for a pizza joint, I thought, man, this DM is and has rocked the world! Mtv had the videos-- Enjoy the Silence, Policy of Truth, and Personal Jesus on high rotation and that set them apart from everyone else once again for extremely high quality shows and videos. Thanks as well for the re--release of the live Black Celebration tour for the fans :) Mash up sort of/ beautiful blend of boards sonic type thing/ ear buds seperation depth bass!! Sfp)
