I test an some expired canister of bear spray to see if it will still work and I was pleasantly surprised by the effectiveness of it!
I learned that it really packs a punch!
I highly recommend that you test out ho w to deploy bear spray before you need to do it in a real life situation.

Bears can run really fast. Its better to point the spray at your eyes so you dont have to witness your own mauling.

This was a great presentation! I have a can of bear spray but have never popped the top or tried to spray it. Glad to know expired spray still works. Thanks for taking one for the team. Great job, Age!

Thanks, Daryl! It was certainly something I wanted to try and see how it feels. I'm glad I did. They sell inert cans as well that supposedly have the same spray feel, but do not choke you. I'll use the old canister as backup, but I'll try to keep my good spray current. I feel a little bit better that way out there😁

Yeah, you're lucky that you don't have bears roaming around that may or may not decide to eat you😁 I was pretty impressed that it still worked well after having it all those years! It was a fun test too😀

This was interesting to see you use it and I was surprised how hard to was to get that clip off to deploy it. We had to carry bear spray with us while visiting Yellowstone and Glacier national parks. It freaked me out the thought of trying to stay calm, deploy it from the right distance and then factor in the wind. We did see grizzly bears but thankful nowhere close to us!

Yeah, I'd say if you're expecting it to slide off easily, it can, but you need to do it the right way. I guess that is good so you don't have accidental sprays. I'm glad I practiced with this and now I know hat it'll take. Yes, the stay calm bit is tougher when faced with something that may want to eat you! I would not want to see any bear too close and especially a Grizzly Bear!!! Yikes😱😱

Yeah, that was a think cloud! After watching the video, I was lucky a big gust of wind didn't come in and blow that all over me. Now I know how it works though so it was a good thing to test it out in case I ever need to use it in a real situation!

I carry it but I hope that I never have to use bear spray. As a deputy, I had to be sprayed with pepper spray to be certified to use it. It is excruciating the first several minutes. My eyes remained shut for nearly an hour. Each time I used it on duty I was also affected. I didn’t like the stuff. I was very happy when tasers came along.

I wonder if a taser would work on a bear, lol😁 I would not like to get that pepper spray in my eyes and that little bit that made me cough was crazy! I could imaging a full does would be incapacitating! It was fun to test this out and I now know the feel of it, if it ever comes time to need it. I sure hope I never need to use it! I see the benefit of having it for just in case.

I’m guessing that’s a lot like pepper spray that the police use. It’ll ruin your day. It’s just uncomfortable but won’t do any damage. Flush with cold soapy water right in your eyes. Also, I remember being told that the material the spray is housed in goes bad and will wear away. I think that may be the reason for the expiration date but I’m not 100% sure if that’s the only reason. 👍

Yes, probably quite similar! I got a tiny spec and I could tell it was awful. I'm glad I got none in my eyes. I imagine taking in a big breath of that would be terrible! I heard the concern was that it may lose the propellant through a tiny leak could be the reasoning and what you makes sense as to why that would happen. They are overly cautious as shown by my experiment, but I'd always want one that isn't expired to be safe. It was a fun and interesting test and now I know the mechanics and how it feels. I hope to never have to do that in a real situation.

I just looked it up as I wanted to know if the Bear knew it was out of date. Google says that the pressure degrades over time. So I'm assuming a new one would spray further. It's great to see it in action Age, thanks for sharing.

Thanks, Chris😁 It's seemed to work pretty well in this case and almost the same distance that they say the spray works. I'd have to compare to a new canister to know for sure. It was a fun test😀

Where I am on Vancouver Island, it's just black bears. Further up the Island there have been Grizzly Bears that swim over from the mainland of British Columbia...that's really scary! It would be nice to not have to worry about big predators out there😀 Well, except for Paddington, but I heard he's easily distracted with marmalade sandwiches😁

I had a channel out of Idaho 10 years ago and had several videos where i demonstrated how to use bear spray and always used out dated experation dated cans one time i even drew a bear on a boulder with a marker and sprayed the boulder i often told people to be aware of wind direction but one thing i learned is even when you spray into the wind you will still get some in your eyes and mouth, and even old out dated can are lethal, powerful stuff.

Last summer I tested a can that had expired in 2007 and it diploid the canister about the same as the one you tested. I also have a can left that expired in 2016 I keep it in my canoe pack for my extra can for backup

That's great to know that these things still work long after they are expired! I'll keep making sure the main one I have on me is not expired, but like you, I think I'll have the other expired one as a backup. After trying out the spray and seeing the cloud on camera, I can see it working for a nuisance bear. I hope I never have to test it out that way😀

Apparently the propellant could slowly leak out so that is why the expiration date. It certainly didn't in this one 😁

My OC/Teargas spray worked well 10 years after expiry... its a money grab to make you buy more.

You always hope to be downwind if you have to use Bear Spray.....also , if you accidentally get it on your arms etc, Dawn dish soap works great to wash it off your skin..*personal experience* and a long story, but stopped carrying it after that.

Yes, it would be nice to be downwind. Sometimes we don't have the choice where a bear comes from though. Thankfully, I have not had to use it for defence yet and I hope to not to have to. Good to know that Dawn dish soap will help. Do you have something else for bear encounters?

I have a few expired cans and I've thought about doing the same as you, however I've heard that blasting off bear spray can obviously leave it in the air to impact other outdoors people or animals. Watching you do it, I don't think I will. Haha 😂

If you're going to do it, find a place that is out of the way and you don't plan on camping at. Also, make sure the wind isn't blowing, lol😁 It was an interesting test and I'm glad I did it. Now I know how it feels to get the clip off and the spraying. If you do it, make sure to film it😀 They also sell inert cans for practice that are supposed to spray the same, but have not pepper in them.

Yes, stay away from the wind or know that when you spray the bear that you're getting sprayed too😁 Yes, I was happy to see the old expired can still works. I'll keep my newly expired can as backup to my brand new one 😊

The main problem is the wind bear spray is better than nothing, but doesn't protect fully For what I have heard, the best protection is a gun Nice video ❤👍

Yes, the wind is a problem! But it's still good to have this as a last resort. There is certainly a big debate about gun vs bear spray. For me personally, I'd rather have a shotgun if a bear is charging at me. To have that though, you need a licence and you also need to be on land where you are allowed to carry one. In parks, you are not allowed to carry one around. We could also move to a place where there are no bears😁

@@NatureAndOther I don't know that a torch will stop them. It may spook them and they may decide to go elsewhere. An angry Grizzly Bear would not be stopped by a torch. Where I go exploring does not have Grizzly Bears, so far.

Man,by the time you get the cap off the bear could be on top of you! I suppose it's better than nothing at all though. I never have used it but we only have black bears out here and they will run when they see you 99% of the time although I have been bluff charged on two occasions several years ago. Great demonstration though!

I was surprised that the safety clip was on there tighter than I expected. I guess that is good because you don't want it going off accidentally! I'm glad I did the practice with it, because now I know and would be prepared for if I needed to use it. I'd be much faster since I wouldn't be talking my way through it while the bear was coming at me, lol😁 This is for that 1% of the time the bear doesn't run away. Holy cow, you've been bluff charged twice? How were your pants afterwards? Did you need to buy new ones?

lol that looked like a bad idea all around. I don't even like carrying it but since this is fascist Canada, commoners like us can't just carry a gun for animal defense like normal human beings, so bear spray is absolutely a tool of last resort. Compressed things like bear spray will last decades. In fact, most expiration dates on most things are generally there for liability purposes.

It was too windy of a day for me to be doing that😁I was lucky the wind didn't shift and blow a nice gust as I was testing that out! Yes, I figure the expiration dates are just to cover their butts. They also get to make a little extra money that way too!
