Depression is often misdiagnosed. Many people are told they have depression when in reality they have a medical condition which leads to symptoms of depression. These conditions are often easily corrected once properly diagnosed.
Problems with the thyroid, electrolytes, or adrenal glands can mimic depression, and will not be helped by taking an anti-depressant. Depression should never be diagnosed without a thorough medical work-up to exclude these other conditions. Prescribing an anti-depressant for a patient on the first visit, without the proper lab testing, in inappropriate.
Correcting your diet and underlying medical conditions often corrects symptoms of depression without the need for an anti-depressant. Make sure you've had all these labs checked, and maybe more, before you are told your symptoms are "all in your head" had given a pill or 3.

I would love to come see you sometime for some blood work. I love in Mississippi and I had my blood work done today. I'm three months into keto so I'm kinda scared of my results at this point. He checked all the things that are normal and I will be 53 in February. Been struggling with perimenapause for years. This year has been better than the last 5. So I wonder were I am with menapause. I have concerned trying to find you and let you do blood work that my doc doesn't do

My tests were always “normal” yet I had obvious nutritional deficiencies and malnutrition as well as everything from major depression to severe chronic pain. I stopped my medication after 22 years (slowly of course), changed my diet, and all is well. Meat heals! Parents should be very careful about taking teens to psychiatrists. They’ll be diagnosed without tests like these and put on meds that can make things much worse. I wish my parents knew about diet and nutrition back in the 90s, but we all know now. 👍🏻

Heather Baldwin you know what else doesn’t heal? The American Heart Association diet. It has been killing people for decades. My boyfriend has always eaten “clean”. Small amounts of lean meat. Tons of greens. He orders two full sized salads. Only a little bit of vinaigrette dressing. Tons of fresh vegetables. Skim milk only. A little bit of whole grain cereal. No bread. He has genetic lipidemia which means his body barely produces any HDL and his triglycerides run sky high. He has two stints in his “widow maker” artery since he was 39. Most men in his family don’t live to be his age, 57. He took tons of meds for this condition and will be on blood thinners forever due to the stints. About 7 mo ago he started investigating Keto. I had told him years ago that I use the Wheat Belly approach to Keto dieting. He thought I was nuts but started investigating out of frustration with not being able to make any progress. He would already never eat sweets. He decided to try it for 3 months. Had his cardiology check up. Everything looked terrible. HDL in single digits. LDL around 220. Triglycerides were also very high. Ok. It always is. Told doc he was trying Keto. Doc almost fainted. Did Keto for 3 mo and went back for bloodwork. His HDL was higher than it had ever been in his life. Still considered too low but way up in double digits. LDL down too. Triglycerides were normal. That’s right, within normal range. First time ever. He has been able to also get off of this Protonics for reflux. He has always been a thin guy and exercised but he lost 15 lbs and has a lot more energy. So does meat heal? Probably not. But ketogenic metabolism does. He has just gone back for the 9 month check (this checking is all at his request and expense) and his doctor is stunned. The doc said a few of his patients have said they are doing this and they have all gotten improvements. But he still refuses to participate in ordering the tests etc. That’s American medicine for you. Most of us are working with our doctors as far as checking our results. We don’t blindly follow a ketogenic diet simply because a group of docs have made claims about it. The peer reviewed science is there and more is coming all the time. The docs who use it for themselves have done the research and used themselves as Guinea Pigs. It works for almost everyone. The AHA diet doesn’t work for anyone. More people are dying every year from heart disease. The medical community blames the patient. Well, the very best part of ketogenic diets? They are easy to adhere to long term. This is the only diet I’ve even tried that can comfortably be followed the rest of my life. I’m going on 10 years on Wheat Belly and it is effortless and I maintain my weight loss without starving or depending on exercise to burn calories. So, don’t knock it unless you’re willing to try it for 3-6 mo. If you do then the lifestyle will sell itself.

Don't remember any lab testing for me.... psych doctors are quick to put labels on people. I found that when I changed my diet my depression Eased. And then when I hit menopause it got even better. I said to doctors for years that it had to do with my hormones which, I had a hard time getting pregnant and they told me that I didn't know what I was talking about. Also I suffered from low magnesium my whole life. When I was coming into my teen years I started to get really bad charlie horses. So bad that my parents brought me to the emergency room because I couldn't straighten my leg. Doctor said I was having growing pains. It wasn't until my 40s when I had my gallbladder removed that I found out that my body was deficient in magnesium and I needed to supplement. That also took care of the heart palpitations that I was suffering from over the years. Medical community is letting people down.

Kym Thompson, if you can afford to pay out of pocket, seek a functional medical/integrative medical doctor who will order a more comprehensive thyroid panel & hormonal panel. Most conventional docs will order BMP, B12, RBC/CBC and a standard thyroid panel - but again conventional docs won’t usually go deeper than TSH, T3, T4. The other levels are not standard tests and a conventional doc may or may not test. Functional med is the best bet if you can afford it, and taking only organic/food based & active forms of B vitamins (methyl), as he mentioned.

@billd3356
@billd3356 5 жыл бұрын
I was suffering with that for months. At first I thought it was weather changes. People don't believe me but when the barometric pressure yo-yos in fall and spring it puts pressure on the brain and I get more depressed. My sinus pain and congestion would not go away for months. Neti Pot, Afrin (only for 3 days at a time), over the counter decongestants. Nothing would touch it I take Claritin in the morning and Rhinocort at night. No nasal discharge so I didn't think it was a sinus infection. Nevertheless, doctor put me on 10 days of antibiotic to rule that out. Didn't work and neither did prednisone. I saw a specialist who looked up my nose and said no infection and no surgery needed. He thought it might be allergy related so I had an allergy test done. I had had those in the past but I discovered that dust mites were worse than I thought. They told me to wash the bedsheets in hot water. I wash in all cold. At least 95% improvement. So, allergy test may help you.

Doctors work with big pharma to make money off of prescribing medications for the symptoms instead of actually healing the underlying problem. There is no money in healing people. If people become healthy, no one would need Drs, or pills, or surgeries, medical supplies, or for that matter any insurance. It's all about keeping you sick and making money. But don't give up, do whatever you need to do for you.

I recently came across your video on depression. On my count, you suggested 17 different tests. I can't afford to run all of these tests. I can probably afford 5-6 at a time. Of these tests which, should I take first?

Dear Dr Berry, please could you so kindly tell me whether Lyrica (pregabalin) can cause depression? Been on 300mg for 6 months due to slipped L5 S1 disc. Been getting awfully depressed during the last month or two. Plus gained 42lbs in those months! I hope you may have a minute to reply please? Thank you

Went to the Dr. to get my type 2 diebetes checked. Never saw this Dr before, 5 min in, he said I am bi-polar. I know I get a bit depressed, but when I asked about vitamins, he said that would not help. Quack Quack, I'm no Dr. but I know a duck when I see it. I have done my research, hence checking out your videos. Thank you,

Acute intermittent porphyria needs to be ruled out too. I think it's much more common than acknowledged. And the most serious aspect is many pharmaceuticals including anti-psychotics, antidepressants, antibiotics, etc make it much worse or serve as a trigger to the as yet not fully expressed gene. (It's a heme disorder that is genetic.) It is now suspected in medication-resistant pshych disorders. But by the time all the meds have been tried the patient is often permanently damaged and disabled. Porphyria mimics a variety of commonly occurring disorders and thus poses a diagnostic quagmire. Psychiatric manifestations include hysteria, anxiety, depression, phobias, psychosis, OCD, anxiety, organic disorders, agitation, delirium, and altered consciousness ranging from somnolence to coma. It's often associated with multiple physical manifestations too such as gut disturbances that mimick crohn's disease and symptoms on the autism spectrum.

Hey doc got a question about schizoaffective. My son has been diagnosed with this which is a cocktail of depression, bipolar, and schizophrenia, he has been taking a generic form of Milerrill called thoridazine 100 Mg tabs 600 MG's a day and its the only med that I have found to work for him but the side effect is throwing up and it seams as he needs more now cuz its not working as it should anymore, and they are stopping the manufacture of the med and this is very scary, so my question is, is there a sister to the Milarill that is not Zyprexa? The Zyprexa worked good but he got violent was taking 5 mg but he was still edgy, so I gave him 10 mg this made him want to clean and do his chores but I can't do violence. I'm worried that there may not be another med for his condition, do you have any suggestions, besides the violence he seamed normal but because of the violence not normal. Thanks

I wish I could get my Dr to check all those things. She told me the vitamin D test isn't covered by insurance unless I've had a diagnosis of a deficiency. So how the hell do you know if you can't get it checked? So stupid. Out of all the tests I requested be done the only one she would do is a1c. It's so frustrating! I know so many have relief from their depression with just keto. I want some relief too! Not meds! Thank you for another great video Dr Berry!

I really wish I could see Dr. Berry, or have him recommend a doctor in my area. I have CAD, Brittle diabetes, deficient D and B, and having to get eye injections. Depressed though, I have so much to be grateful for. I was attempting keto, was getting glucose normal range, then Dr. insisted upping my cholesterol meds. So, now I feel confused and defeated.

I have a question unrelated to this topic. I have had a problem with bleeding and receding gums for the past 30 years. I have been to many dentists, including holistic ones, and have spent thousands and thousands of dollars. I have had most of the silver removed from my mouth, and have many crowns. I am almost 70 years old. I eat healthy, low carb/sugar, brush, floss, etc. take vitamins including C and do whatever I can. I find vitamin K2 helps somewhat with the bleeding but I still have issues where they will bleed spontaneously. I avoid foods that are hard to chew. I am at my wits' end. Was wondering what your thoughts are on this and if you could maybe do a video regarding it.

My BF and I are living the Keto life. But his doctor has refused to run some of these tests, even though he wanted to self pay for them. Insurance is hugely expensive with huge deductibles and conpays. I suppose we could go to a lab and simply ask for all the tests we would like but they are quite expensive. How on earth is anyone supposed to afford all of these tests? I understand that you are simply stating the information but paying for the tests and then buying the supplements would be a huge expense. I struggle already to buy the co q10, vitamin D, etc. Also, the Keto lifestyle itself requires additional expense. I consider along this worthwhile expenses but there is an end point to every budget. If we even get universal healthcare perhaps we can do more to optimize our health but for now it’s doing the best we can with what we can afford.

Had my thyroid tested 20+ times over a 26 yrs and showed normal EVERY time. After 26 years of being told I'm depressed I had an X-ray for neck pain and found calcification on my thyroid and weeks later an Ultrasound found goiters on the left and right side as well as a cyst on the left side. Basal Body Temperature can be more effective than a blood test to diagnose Thyroid disease.

I think any doctor who tries to diagnose thyroid issues using only TSH (which many do) should have their medical licence revoked. If thyroid is suspected you need a full thyroid panel done and an ultrasound as a matter of routine. Anything less is insufficient to make a thyroid diagnosis.

I’ve suffered depression for years. Take a low thyroid supplement but never have any energy. My oral temp can go as low as 96* and never climbs above 97.3. I don’t know if this is low enough to be significant but my doctors are all traditional and don’t want to hear anything out of the norm. I’m glad you finally got an answer. My question is, was your neck enlarged? Did you have any external symptoms that led to the ultrasound?
@georgina979
@georgina979 5 жыл бұрын
The neck pain was due to normal wear and tear from office work. A chiropractor took the X-ray before adjusting my neck. He happened to see the calcification and I took the X-ray to my doctor. Then she ordered an ultrasound. I didn't/don't have noticeable enlargement in my neck. Your temp seems low. Hope you can get this worked out. A thyroid support supplements might help. I refused thyroid medication from my doctor and take a thyroid support supplement instead.

@@georgina979 I found that synthetic thyroid which was prescribed did nothing for me. I now take desiccated bovine thyroid from New Zealand. They typically only have grass fed animals and don't give them antibiotics. At any rate, it balances my thyroids nicely.
