It’s pretty basic info…I live in Canada where we don’t even have/never had Borders and even I know it’s a bookstore. Never made it to NYC still-was supposed to go there that September because 2001 had already been awful for me. Instead I watched plane after plane loop over my head to land at Toronto. We had that same super-blue sky that day.

Thank You so much for making these videos that serve as a reminder of how different the area used to be. I miss the skyline that I grew up with that represented a time when the world wasn't so crazy, and this city was a wild & fun thriving place to be. Sure there was still violent crime before 9/11 but nowhere near the daily magnitude and chaos you see today. I lived and grew up here all my life and I don't see this town ever going back to the exciting times that existed during the 70's, 80's and 90's of the 20th Century anytime soon. So many businesses gone and way of life for many only kept alive through memories. These videos and photos should serve us all as a reminder of how we as humans interacted with each other before the internet eventually send us all living in private cocoons.

Its so weird that these two iconic buildings dont have a shit load of interior photos. Ive always wanted to visit the twin towers as a kid after my grandma told me how tall they are in person. I was 10 going on 11 when 9/11 happened so it really hurt me that i never got a chance to go to ny and see them. I still never been to NY yet and the crazy thing is im only 6 hours away from NY. Id at least like to visit the statue of liberty, uptown, the 9/11 museum and the mall that's connected to the subway.

Digital photography was in its infancy then. You really had to have a reason for wasting one of the 24 pictures on an average roll of film. Nobody had cameras on phones either, so you had to commit to carrying around a camera. How often do people take inside pictures of office buildings, even with today’s picture heavy world?

The higher quality shots are film prints that have been digitally scanned at a high resolution. Jpegs in particular degrade when saved repeatedly. The quality on those shots are exactly what film prints were like: digital is much improved but for years I would have to ‘shop contrast and depth in to make it film quality.

4:45. This is the Deutsche Bank Building elevated plaza which was completely destroyed by the South Tower collapse. The building itself suffered so much damage that it had to be demolished later on as the damage was beyond repair. It was a 39-story building. You can look it up at Wikipedia.

The photo you say is a library was actually a Border’s bookstore. If you look at the hanging Customer Service sign, the smaller text above says “Borders”. It is amazing as compared to this current day and age how dated the architecture of the twin towers were. I would have thought if the towers were still around today, if they would have been totally renovated and updated to today’s building standards. Or maybe they would have been demolished by now and new buildings in their places. However, the 911 event was a wake up call for the US to be more aware of these kinds of events as well as making large buildings safer for occupants. There was also a previous blast deep in the underground parking area of one of the towers back in 1996 or so. Not sure if that served as a wake-up call to make the buildings safer for occupants.

I doubt they would have removed the buildings as a remodel lol. In fact they might have even kept some stuff intact from when it was originally built. Everyone likes vintage anything. Even those ugly as hell 1960's buildings still around. If it has any historic merit, people like to keep it.
@pinlight97
@pinlight97 Жыл бұрын
It was a wake up call in 1993. In fact, quite ironically, the reinforcements made in the area where that bombing took place were right beneath the one spot in the Marriott that remained standing. That allowed a group of firefighters and civilians to survive the collapse of both towers. The stairwells were also made safer (still not to city code as that would have actually meant additional stairwells) but luminescent strips and other measures to make them more navigable than they were in ‘93. Those improvements saved thousands as the evacuation was considerably faster on 9/11.

I remember I was looking forward to September 11, 2001 in part because Bob Dylan's '"Love and Theft"' came out that day. I can just imagine Borders employees unpacking Dylan's new CD and talking about the day ahead and thinking that the Baby Boomers in the Twin Towers offices might come along at lunchtime to buy the new Dylan CD, but not much else to look forward to.

Old? I wish I could've got to see these buildings in person for myself... I was born a little over a month after their last day, so I would never get the chance. To this day, even recently learning about the exact events, I get an oddly nostalgic and warm feeling accompanied with awe whenever I see them. The new building doesn't compare in the slightest.

As a Gen X'er and very appreciative of 1970's Gothic Brutalist architecture I actually liked the style of WTC 4, 5 and 6. They were impressive (yes - they were I have to agree very rooted in their time period - but ugly? ) The 1983 movie "Trading Places" had a famous scene that was filmed in the Commodities Exchange which was located in the upper floors of WTC 4. The upper part of the South Tower leaned to the east as it collapsed and flattened WTC 4 - Some of the first photos taken after the towers collapsed show the small part of WTC 4 that remained as well as 5 and 6 engulfed in fire... At the time was surprised that falling debris could set the lower buildings ablaze...

Seeing the snow on the rooves of the Twin Towers reminded me of a weird and very liminal dream I had once when I was a little kid after I watched The Day After Tomorrow, close to the time it came out on DVD. In it, I was quite a bit older than I was at the time, approximately as old as I am now (27 years old at the time of writing this), working in the office of an unspecified company in one of the main buildings. I would say I was working somewhere in the middle section of either the North or South Tower, between the lower sky lobby on the 44th floor and the upper sky lobby on the 78th floor, with a direct line of sight to a drinking fountain on that floor. Being a kid in real life at the time of the dream, I would have had the mind of a child trapped in the body of an adult, so there is a better than 95% chance I would have gotten caught surfing websites for children on company time. I remember looking outside through a window near my cubicle and saw a moderate snowfall, which is not at all unusual for the climate of New York City in the winter, though it was unseasonably cold. It was probably an alternate recollection of the scene in the library after the rising ocean floods Manhattan and the people are considering evacuating after the time has already come and gone to do so. However, the storm in the dream was probably a textbook example of a nor'easter, though the tropical storm force winds would have caused the building to sway, seen in my beverage tumbler and switch chain of my desktop lamp vibrating on my desk.

I appreciate that story, and I mean this with no attempt to offend u or be mean but this might be a chance to learn something about life. George Carlin RIP was an insightful comedian who taught us some wise things to consider- for example: "dont tell anyone about the dreams you have, bc no one gives a shit." Take that how u will but i bet that in time you will umderstand how true that actually is. No one gives a shit about our dreams. Trying to help @scratch...

That was the particular appeal of the Twin Towers (as well as the hotel, WTC 4, 5 and 6, and the whole underground "bathtub" that went down six levels below the concourse)- the chiseled silver and gray stark utilitarian architecture that was unique to its time. Besides being the tallest and having the highest floor count when they were built it was so amazing that each floor was an acre in size - even up to 110 (well including the below grade floors technically 116 or 117?) There was almost 4 million sq ft of office space in each tower and 2 million in the lower buildings. When the Sears (Willis) Tower surpassed the Twin Towers in height only 2 of the 9 "tubes" that make up the Willis Tower go to the uppermost floors; due to modern aesthetics supertall buildings today top out to "spires" and the highest floors are either technical service floors or small footprint offices... not a whole acre of spaces 1300 ft above ground level like the Twin Towers had.

I watched this long youtube video about the innovation and challenges they faced with putting elevators in the towers and how the sky lobby system helped with that. There were 99 elevators in EACH tower. 198 total elevators. So with people getting into work i can't imagine there wasn't a single elevator (likely many) operating at the time of impact with people in them. Just something i always thought about, i have a fear (like im sure a lot of people do) of being trapped in an elevator, or even worse free falling to the ground.

This meant that we thought about photos we were taking. I’m sure there were/still are plenty of photos out there (eg prints) but most either don’t want to, can’t, or don’t see the point to uploading them here. I know my parents have pics they took of the plaza, underground mall, and with the twin towers behind them from the Empire State Building shot in late-August 2001 when they were there for the first time. i wonder if on that day in new york if there were other emergencies not related to what was going on at the trade center in the area and if there was any firemen or police to respond since all of them were at the trade center?..was there looting going on elsewhere since all the cops were so distracted?

4:46 is a view of the initial debris that fell at the entrance to the Deutsche Bank building, aka "Bankers Trust Plaza." WTC 2 is seen across the street centre-left. This photo was made before anything collapsed. When WTC 2 collapsed, Deutsche Bank sustained severe damage to its façade and extensive contamination by the toxic dust. It was closed for several years, allowing mold and mildew to make things worse, and it was eventually demolished. A fire during the disassembly-style demolition killed two FDNY firemen in 2007.

I wonder if there are any photographs on the interior of the North Tower's (WTC1) 110th floor where all of the telecommunication electronics (Plus one or two TV studios IIRC) that connected to the aerials on top of the roof were held?

Dude…. The little white oddly shaped building in between the Marriott and Twin towers at 1:12 is the same one in the perspective shot at 1:17… The marriott was 22 stories and the roof would’ve been 23. It’s obviously not that…

You mention a building other than the diamond building that is probably never going to be built at 5:17. I'm fairly certain the diamond building is the only one in that schematic drawing that isn't already done, no?
