I think a homeless MLB team that just spent its 81 home games touring Minor League ballparks could be a moneymaker. Or even a regional team that had 4 minor league parks as its home fields. It's tough to fill a park for 81 games in a small or mid size market, but 20 games in a small market makes them each a big deal.
@shaunnichols1743
@shaunnichols1743 9 ай бұрын
That would never fly because of broadcast rights. It won't matter if you're packing an 8,000 seat stadium in Amarillo if it costs you $40m a year in regional TV revenue. There would also be the matter of finding enough minor league parks that meet MLB requirements. Even Sacramento has a bunch of work to do and their stadium is top of the line by minor league standards.

@@randy7928 I love me some Bananaball, but they are a LONG way away from the finances of an MLB team. The stadium issue isn't a matter of selling tickets, it's what MLB regulations require in order to host its games. In addition to clubhouse and practice facilities, there are things like media box capacity, lighting and camera placement requirements, and the ability to host multiple broadcast trucks on site. Few if any minor league parks meet those requirements.

I heard recently from some online board that even if the Tampa Bay Rays were to build a new stadium, it would sit on land close to the current one. The location is already horrible and hard to get to so I can't see much of an improvement. With the way Tampa, St Pete and Clearwater are spread out, not to mention Sarasota and Bradenton to the south, most of the attendees spend the bulk of their time on bridges. Yet, with or without a new stadium, Miami has proven that new stadiums don't guarantee crowds. It's Florida. Maybe consideration should be given to Jacksonville. Smaller city, yes but not too much different in size than Cincinnati. Stay tuned.

DG, if the Rays get their new stadium they WILL NOT sell out games. Maybe for a week or two if that. New stadiums come with higher prices. Rays have some cheap ticket in some areas. Rays depend on walk up traffic to a high degree. Without Corporate support and those employees it is hard to fill a stadium in St. Pete. If you take out the rich in Florida, it is basically a low middle class to poor state. Is there a chance that the ticket prices regardless of seat location just don't justify all the other expenses of going to a game? Here in NYC, as I understand it, parking costs at the stadiums are something like $40 or $50. I'm not gonna harp on the cost of food and booze, but it too has increased. Just because the teams announce partnerships for local joints doesn't mean folks are gonna come to the games. And another thing: sure watching a game at home and complaining about the time it takes is one thing, but sitting in a stadium watching the game, well, it was nice to have to stare at home plate all day long to see what's going on because of the bloody pitch clock forcing a new pitch every 15 or 20 seconds. There's barely enough time to update your scorecard before the next pitch is thrown. And finally, maybe more and more people are no longer fans and just don't gaf.

As a Miami native. People need to stop saying there’s little demand and blaming fans saying we don’t care. Every year Miami marlins Tv ratings are top half of the league. The stadium is in a terrible area with terrible traffic getting there. Paid by local tax payers who are still angry at the team ; resulting in higher cost of living. Many locals refuse to give money to Marlin ownership. Especially after the team said, if the stadium is built with taxpayer money. We can have a better product on the field… That changed immediately, we traded yellich, JT relmuto, Stanton, you name it. Their gone. US locals got duped. We finally had a playoff bound team with Kim Ng. Now Kim Ng is gone.. this team does whatever it can to not pay anyone. Meanwhile let’s look at the team…. We have an owner who isn’t even a billionaire.. poorest owner in baseball. how’s bruce Sherman an owner!? How’d it even get approved following Jeters investment team.?!.. we won’t invest in our in the field product and fans aren’t going to show up to a crap team. For what it’s worth, marlins haven’t been the same team since Jose Fernandez died. Last year, we had flashes of fun. Look at the Florida panthers and Miami dolphins. We know about Oakland A's and their issues with the city of Oakland. The Miami Marlins issues aren't just the team being mediocre to bad in the years after their last World Series title run. The previous owners lied to the community about the boost to the local economy that a new stadium would bring, and this blew up in their faces when it didn't happen. The Tampa Rays are stuck at Tropicana because the city of Saint Petersburg will not allow them to break their lease, and they will fight the MLB to keep the team there even if the demand is not. The Rays only have a few options in the State of Florida, and that is to move to Tampa proper or move to Orlando.

I think there is a need for baseball in Florida and there is an interest I mean we have spring traning down here and people come from all over to watch it. I understand the marlins and rays situation the marlins suck they have for a while now but the rays have been on and off 2020 they went to the World Series. The rays up until recently have always usually made it to the playoffs but sadly choke what people don’t realize is most people watch it on tv I know servers pepole that prefer to watch the games on tv then to go to the stadium. I also don’t think the rays will move but I can see a new stadium and think if st pete can afford it it might bring more fans to games instead of watching it on tv. I think it is a bit harsh comparing the rays to Oakland and Miami if those two teams didn’t suck they probably would get fans like how Tampa does Tampa is the only team that can do what they do by getting cheap players and turning them into pretty decent or good players I mean there first 14 games or so they went undefeated last season.
