Keri interviews Helena, 22-year-old woman who spent the majority of her teenage years embroiled in the social justice world view and identifying as transgender. At 18, she began using testosterone to medically transition but realized after 17 months that this decision was misguided, which resulted in her detransitioning. Now, she speaks out against the push to medicalize young people struggling with their body image and identity to raise awareness for the explosion of gender dysphoria in young women especially.

About Deprogrammed
Hosted by former SJW Keri Smith, "Deprogrammed" is dedicated to unravelling Keri's former ideology.
We'll explore the philosophy, strategy, and tactics that intersectional ideologues use to program "Social Justice Warriors," turning otherwise thoughtful, critically-minded individuals into armies of extreme leftist NPCs. Some episodes are interviews with special guests, and others are deep-dives into a different aspect of "social justice" culture, drawing both from Keri's personal experience as well as current events.

So I know my beliefs and way of thinking drastically changed from the age of 15 to 18. And then from 18 to 25 even more drastically. Making these decisions at such a young age is very detrimental to the lives of these kids, its so sad. It's not just dressing up like the other sex, its taking hormones and getting surgery and things you can't take back. The therapist, counselors, and school personnel are really failing these kids. Breaks my heart.

What is most distressing to me as a retired pediatrician is that Helena did not mention physicians or therapists as supportive and knowledgeable to assist with her detransition. Same as Alcoholics Anonymous. It's a cult, a closed moral system that fixates on one aspect and one aspect only, and demands you internalize it as your "identity": "I am an alcoholic." They pretend it's an "illness" or "sickness" but they treat it with prayer, not medical treatment, and in no medical situation are you berated to "identify" with your illness. And trans, like AA, insists that the treatment is 100% successful all the time. It never fails. If you relapse/detrans, then that's a moral failing on you. In no other medical situation is the failure of the treatment regarded as a moral failing by the patient. You never see oncologists insist that cancer treatment is 100% effective, but if you don't go into remission, that's because you didn't follow the program. And AA never addresses the underlying causes that made people drink. They just fixate on the steps and obsessing about alcohol, making it the singular focal point of their entire lives. Which is amazingly unhealthy in its own right. Ditto trans. They're both cults.

@@exdetransitioner Remains to be seen. Plenty of time left. Every Muslim insists they're a "true Muslim" and yet every ex-Muslim is told they were "never a true Muslim." Same with Christianity. There's no such thing as being born "in the wrong body." You are not "in" your body. You _are_ your body. Everything about you comes from the physical characteristics of your biology. The only reason you are you is because of your body. The idea of a separate "identity" is as unhinged from reality and magically thinking as auras or astral projection. Those who claim otherwise are ignorant science and biology deniers, as bad as any Christian creationist.

Pausing at 12:00 to say that I experienced something very similar with my therapist and my sexuality. I went through a time of confusion after my husband passed away and thought I might be gay. That was totally supported and applauded (in a way that made me kind of uncomfortable, like I’d accomplished something but I hadn’t?), but when I started to realize that I definitely was not gay, my therapist (and others) were concerned and even claimed I had internalized homophobia. It was cool if I questioned being straight, it was NOT cool if I was questioning being gay. It took me a while to get away from a woman I was seeing because everyone kept trying to convince me that it was my grief/internalized homophobia/whatever. Totally straight btw. No brownie points or applause for it, but I’m definitely straight 😂

She nails what I've been thinking for a while--what we're calling "trams"* is probably about 4 or 5 separate issues, being unhelpfully lumped together and treated the same, to the detriment of many. As someone with the (I believe) rare neurological disconnect (that actually has little to do with "gender", in the social sense), I appreciate her thoughtfulness in approaching all these aspects of the issue. I can't imagine what it must've been like to be young in those spaces, which I was mostly shunned from/was too old for, and how much strength it took to find herself among all the pain and noise there. She hits the nail on the head when she talks about how gender identity is not really a useful way to talk about the human experience around 13:00 . My granddaughter is 12 years old. She is in a class with 6 girls. 3 out of those girls have said that they are demi-sexual. My granddaughter invited one of these girls for a sleepover. The girl said she didn't think that was a good idea because she is demi-sexual and my granddaughter isn't. I think this is a trend that young girls have gravitated towards as a way of feeling better about themselves, or special in some way. I hope some day we have laws that prohibit children from transitioning. I don't care what adults do to themselves, how they live their lives , or how they identify. They are adults and are free to do what they want. Children are easily influenced and some parents seem to enjoy having a child who is so unique. I have seen too many stories of people detransitioning. It is heartbreaking. I don't want to see any more. The only way for that to happen is for them not to transition in the first place. Non-binary - obviously - isn't a real thing (there's no such thing), but it functions as "trans lite" and an on-ramp to the trans ideology and medicalization. Unplug her from the internet. Get her involved in the outside world. It will go away. Not only does "non-binary" literally make no sense, it's ironic, because it creates a binary of "non-binary" and not-"non-binary".

The argument being, that saying that your a person with autism is likening it to saying your a person with a disease, that autism is something that is negative and secondary to your person and its a denial of your personhood. She was hysterical over the past 18 months of obsessing over the need to transition when in reality it was the last thing on earth she actually wanted. When it comes to the pill analogy in the sense that doctors could discover a way to remove the dysphoria of persons suffering with gender identity issues this does lead me to believe that this is the reason behind and overall acceptance and also an identification of oneself with mental illness of all kinds. Instead of people having an ailment or mental illness or medical condition they are now instead of becoming that medical condition. I think it’s a twisting on the idea of “owning it“.

I’m really concerned. A few days ago, my 29 yr old daughter who has been lesbian since she was 16...is now saying she is transgender & wants to start testosterone later this year. I have no idea where this came from & how to help her just in case this is a big mistake.
@UnsafeSpace

Hope you can help her find a therapist without the personal agenda Helena's appear to have (based on her comments). This topic is covered occasionally on Unsafe Space, hope you can learn about it enough to help you daughter here and elsewhere. Keri refers to the present day high rate of trans-claiming people as trenders, following a popular trend rather than being the quite rare transgender person from decades ago. Those rare cases generally are not encouraging it on others, and don't wish the problem on anyone. Sexual preference says nothing about gender dysphoria or "gender identification". In case that is related, being a lesbian should not inform your daughter anything about being in the "wrong body" or having a different "gender identity" from biological sex. Unrelated. I hope your daughter is able to come to terms with her biological sex and seeks help from someone without a preconceived agenda. [Keith]

This is a point of confusion for me. I think there are probably some people who are biologically trans (brain development didn't match sex development) and others who "go trans" as a reaction to toxic gender roles, sexism, sexual trauma, etc., and it seems that there needs to be much more counseling and exploration to be sure of which is going on before someone goes and changes their.body, but I don't understand what the issue with social justice is. Don't all people of conscience want social justice?

*There are some questions that immediately spring to mind* 1) Where were Helena's parents/family during all this? 2) Given her preoccupation with life online, Helena clearly had trouble living in & interacting with the real world. Why did no one notice or intervene before she became so disconnected from reality?
@UnsafeSpace
@UnsafeSpace 3 жыл бұрын
Good questions. From what she said, when she sought help in person she got support and encouragement for transitioning. No authority in school or the mental health industry that I recall her mentioning attempted to work with her to figure out the problem, or slow the process. All the school and Medical people did was encourage it. |And when she began to question it, her therapist was opposed to de-transitioning, objected strongly. She seemed to indicate her parents were pushed aside. [Keith]

@@UnsafeSpace Thank you for the courteous reply. Perhaps I'm simply too old to understand, but almost every 4th word out of Helena's mouth concerned Tumbler, posts, accounts, or something else Internet-related, so clearly she spent far too much time online/attached far too much importance to online goings on. Add to that the incredibly compressed timeline from diagnosis to therapy and then hormones. I wonder if Helena has or will bring suit against her therapist for either misdiagnosis (Helena's actual issue was an online predilection/tenuous hold on reality) or malpractice (being solely transition-affirming).

That brain surgery I think would be compared to a lobotomy. I can hear it now. Also, if it happens that it has something to do with the brain, wouldn’t that filter down to appropriate levels of harmonies. So, if they feel like a man, maybe more female hormones would be helpful etc. The brain controls literally everything. I know this because I had no choice but to learn a lot about the brain when my husband had his stroke. My biggest concern is they are allowing young kids make these choices and there is no way a child or even a teenager can possibly understand the long term effects of transitioning. From what I’ve studied, it’s a lifetime of serious meds, lots of illness and hospitalizations, infections etc. It’s a form of dysphoria that really needs to be treated with counseling and proper medication for their true gender.

Keri this is one of your best interviews, and I would welcome a longer discussion with Helena where she delves more into her thoughts about Wokeism. One thought I had, which I will bring up at the next live chat, is the view that women are more affected than men by trans issues. Perhaps true on the surface. But I would suggest that there is an intersection between Incels and Trans. They both arise in puberty, from social / sexual rejection, congregate in like-minded online communities which radicalizes them to the point of causing harm either to themselves or others. In other words, putting aside how Wokies have weaponized yet another issue, these are children that are suffering, that are alienated, and who need our help and guidance into adulthood.

He came out as trans about the same age and started on Testosterone at the age of 17 and by 18, he had a double mastectomy. He had a totally hysterectomy last Christmas. He says he is happy. I just pray he doesn’t wake-up some day and realize what he has done to his self. This interview just made me cry. It hits home very close. His mother has stopped talking to me because she says that i am a white-supremacy and a hater. This is so hard to understand and hurts so bad because I love them so much.

Wow. Maybe he is really happy, but it is reasonable to be skeptical. Likely so many people are acting proud and encouraging for the transition, celebrating it, giving legitimacy to the decision. Making such decisions at 17 and 18 is foolish. Those who encourage the life altering physical changes I consider bad people. The mother apparently is foolish, and does not know what "white-supremacy" means or what hate is. I hope your grandchild is indeed happy and remains so, but again I am skeptical. Regrets after growing up a bit are common. [Keith]

Simple. Just make it an option if you want a pill to get rid of dysphoria vs transition. That eliminates bias, and still makes it the person’s own autonomy. Bc yes, I’m sure they’re be people who would prefer that route for a myriad of reasons vs some ppl would still choose tnrasition route.

I am wondering to what extent sexual orientation influences people vis-a-vis the question of transitioning ? I’ve never heard anyone speak to this question. I’ve also been wondering if more and more young women are choosing to explore lesbianism as a reaction to many things, including the gross pornification of our culture, and if their lesbianism causes them to want to transition? (Yes, I believe some women choose to explore lesbianism because they are beyond disillusioned with men. Not always but sometimes.)

This is nothing new this has been going on for years and years and years. It's all part of learning the process of who you Are, and what you are. And there is nothing wrong with this.

Put it this way - you will be excommunicated and thrown out of any social justice community if you don’t go along with gender identity theory. Gender identity theory, critical race theory, intersectional feminism, and “q weer theory” - all bundled together under postmodernism. Basically you must subscribe to all of these, you cannot pick & choose. If you reject any aspect of this, you are cast out of the social justice left - and actually The Left in general, in my experience, but the further left you go, the worse the rot.

We'll keep hearing these stories as long as the woke internet continues to define transgender as a social construct. And that medical transitioning and hormones are fun toys don't present complications for a cisgender brain and nervous system, and the body in general. True gender dysphoria is a very rare neurologic condition with proposed genetic, endocrine, and brain structural/functional causes. Due to genetics or developmental hormonal factors, the brain and nervous system can be differentially wired to respond to specific sex hormone concentrations, as well as existing sex characteristics. Gender dysphoria is not caused by living in a society and being at odds with prescribed gender roles. That is called gender-nonconformity, which is a common facet of cisgender people and should never be treated with medical transitioning. Unfortunately, the level of idiocy and validation-craving running amok in woke medical professions and social media has conflated true dysphoria with trauma, internalized misogyny, gender nonconformity, social contagions, and other mental health conditions. I am so disappointed that we, as 21st century citizens in a first world country, have decided interpret transgender by only examining loose and poorly defined cultural and sociologic concepts, instead of turning to EMPIRICAL data as found in the neurosciences, and furthermore educating ourselves properly other psychiatric conditions that mimic dysphoria. We have got to do better, otherwise more people, especially young cisgender women, are going to continue hurting themselves like this.
@Mr-Tibbster
@Mr-Tibbster 3 жыл бұрын
Whilst gender dysphoria is a real condition, simply put, a person who's brain is rejecting the realilty of their physical body (they either want to be the opposite sex, or are confused over which one they feel they should be causing a lot of mental grief), and such people deserve care and compassion. But this ‘non-dysphoric’ “gender spectrum” (ie; the teaching that “male and female” is a “social construct”, and that in fact that there are “hundreds of genders” to choose from) I argue is nothing but those with “certain gendered personality traits”, being used to create an entirely fabricated construct of “genders”, seperate from “sex” (when in realilty I argue they are one in same). For example, a man who is sexually straight, and is comfortable in his own body, but likes to wear dresses, or merely acts “effeminate” (or womanly), would be now classified as some sort of “third gender”, as opposed to being merely… an effeminate man. In essence, these “genders'' are “personality” types, or ''vibes”, which are categorised into a system, very much akin to many pseudo-scientific “personality tests” which are not founded upon any form of science, or genuine psychiatry, but are as based in reality as star signs. Constructs which take pieces of reality and puts them in an entirely new fictional framework of thought or perception. What is merely a persona, has become a pseudo-scientific identification ideology which states “feelings are genders”, when the true definition of gender, is from the biological root, merely, the body one is born with. There is nothing else, there can be no more than two genders to be (or “choose” in the case of the dysphoric). Through the abuse of semantics, the term “personality” has been replaced by the word “gender”, and then upon that platform, it is made to fit into the framework of “gender theory”. One could even regard such “gender-sciences” as offensive to those with genuine gender dysphoria, for it invalidates their experiences of seeking to become “another sex” (often via clothing changes and surgical transitioning) based upon their internal feelings, of which the modern “gender-science” ideology classifies as “gender and not sex” in their own terminologies. The very root of the idea of gender being seperate to sex originates from a recent attempt to rationalise gender dysphoria as “normalilty”, and that such an “internal gender spectrum” seperate from one’s sex applies to “everyone” (not just the dysphoric), but it ignores the vital detail that a dysphoric person is not happy with their PHYSICAL SEX, based upon their internal (“gendered”) thoughts and feelings. Thus I argue further validates my stand that gender and sex are (and should be) ONE. To seperate them only invalidates trans-people and their wants/needs to change their bodies to match their “inner genders”. The attempt at normalisation of both gender dysphoria and “non-binary” mentalities as merely “a part of normal human spectrum”, of course, comes from a good place in the heart, a place of compassion. An attempt to help people feel included in society, rather than “outcasts” or “freaks” (as they were once called, and were often subject to terrible abuse and bullying), and of course, this is noble. But a man is a man, a woman is a woman, purely based upon our physical construction, all other “genders” beyond the two sexes are figments of the imagination, fraught with contradictions and convolutions. I argue, these ideologies, though from a noble place in the heart, is in the long run a greater evil. For the results have caused “rapid onset gender dysphoria” in many children, of whome had no such issues in the first place, but have become dsyphoric merely due to being “educated” in this ideology, with it, rises in suicide rates and other mental diorders in association with.
