In fairness the extra fan probably is very useful, perhaps even required in some cases to get the expected performance from the card, especially if they are using the same cooler on the hotter GPU as well. The bit I really don't get is how they split the fans up, the rear fan and one in front it really aught to be their own separate channels so you can tune the sound profile of having those two fans 'co-operating'. The other two fans can share and it doesn't matter or I guess the front 3 could all share and it wouldn't matter much as the noise is largely coming from the iteration between the two fans, so you only strictly speaking must have the ability to control the RPM of the rear independently of the front.

Extra thick heatsinks also require higher static pressure (and thus louder fans) to provide any cooling at all. I'm stuck with moderately loud fans even when GPU is just at 30% load. It's 0 RPM in idle, or audible 1000 to 1300 RPM under load. Inaudible 800 RPM is pretty much useless for cooling. 3080 Strix.

Do have to remember he is testing on an open air bench - the results in a case will vary and bias the good results to towards the cards with more cooling potential, and the noise from inside the box is slightly less important as the box even with very little effort put into the sound profile will deaden it some. If you are having to choose between packing something like this or a FE into a smaller case (that this would fit in still) this probably outperforms and won't overheat or be as loud in comparison.

@Duracellmumus7 күн бұрын
There is no solution because this kind of fans are not capable to pull air or make negative pressure on the input side. Just make push on the output side to make a flow and the flow will drag the air at the inlet. The smaller gaps between the fins make the input side loading much worst.

So the 4th fan isnt loud?
@94b20gsr2 күн бұрын
@House.. Not at all with regular gaming, 500-520w loads. If you manually turn the fans up to 100%, they will reach ~3300rpm and make a lot of noise. While gaming, they seem to hover around 1300rpm in performance mode. While moving to 8th place in the Hall of Fame for Steel Nomad DX12 last night, putting the fans at 100% kept the core and ram under 55c for the entire run while WireView was showing around a 610w pull from the 12vhpwr cable. The cooling is capable of much more than normal gaming requires is the picture I'm trying to paint.
@tg24620 сағат бұрын
@@94b20gsr My Astral 5080 is also pretty silent, can confirm what you are saying. While gaming I get around 300-350 w tops, fans stay around 1200-1300 rpm in perf mode. Temps are also extremely low, like yours. Vram goes to 34500 GBs without issues too.

@@tg246 Very similar experience then. @PoRRasturvaT7 күн бұрын
Fan Control is not that much of a bloat, you know? Works so much better than any other software with the custom curves that you can put on basically any fan and any sensor the thing can detect.
@CossackHD7 күн бұрын
I disagree with utility of extra fan headers on GPU, mostly because it gonna look really ugly with the cables. No need to use them unless you lack headers on motherboard. I had 2 GPUs with this feature and never used it, but it would be useful if you deshrouded the card and placed 120mm case fans instead of the stock ones. As for case fans.... Fan Control is lightweight software with extremely flexible ways to set up fan curves. I got case fans speed adjusting depending on average between CPU and GPU temps. Asus software could do similar things, but it would also cause occasional BSOD when I'd switch profile.

The 2 extra fan plugs for adding fans is so the GPU can control 2 case fans and the CPU can control the rest. Standard fan control is an either or situation. Either the CPU controls the fans and they don't ramp up when only the GPU is under load or they are controlled by the GPU and wont ramp up when the CPU is under load. Plug the 2 case fans that mostly feed the GPU into the GPU and the rest into the motherboard and you have a hybrid control so both get fed fresh air when needed. That's a great feature that should be on all cards today considering the premium price.

Im interested in how the noise testing was done, as im wondering if the fan facing the microphone and being much closer to the microphone causes skewed dBA? Then again I guess the additional fan is closer to the PC user anyways 😂

Hey buddy i love your videos! Is the astral just replacing 5080/90 strix as asus have a 5070ti strix on the website
@dqniel17555 күн бұрын
I wonder if you got a defective backside fan? The TechPowerUp review has the noise levels being roughly equal to the FE in "P" mode and wayyy quieter than the FE in "Q" mode.
@TheMohd117 күн бұрын
Nice video, thanks mate, plz tell me if i'm wrong, but double the noise equals 3 more decibels. So 9 decibels equals 8 times the initial noise level
@amrmoustafa3286 күн бұрын
missed the part where noisy fans are an issue ad... Sorry but you are right maybe there are other ways to to this.
@JBits-m9p7 күн бұрын
completely removing the fan may also help with airflow. Asus marketing probably made them install the fan, if you are going to copy nvidias design idea at least test it first.

Roman, your charts list Asus Crosshair X870E Hero with BIOS 9945. What kind of BIOS is that? I thought the highest available was 1003. Thanks
@stauntssantana6 күн бұрын
Afaik ASUS uses 99** to denote testing/beta BIOSes and 9945 is a very early BIOS version for the Crosshair X870E Hero earlier than any publicly available version.
@adammaik6 күн бұрын
Per SAFEDISK, test/beta/public bios files carry same name. Does not explain why this particular one was used with 9800X3D during testing. Would be nice to get a clear explanation from Roman.

I tried everything in cooling and quickly gave up on push-pull it always create an annoying whine because one fan will be faster or more powerful and force the other one into over-rotation, it would work theoretically if they were both perfectly synchronized but it never happens in reality so you end up with annoying frequencies being generated

On the next test just remove the 4th fan completely for better airflow through the card. It could help a bit more with thermals.

Hey Herr Roman, what is the W/mK for that Duronaut material? No mention on that website nor in both PDF's. I don't care much for this type of material, much rather prefer micro diamonds which have a much higher W/mK. So do tell what is the W/mK. Tschüss Herr Roman.

Would probably have even lower temps with the rear fan removed, since it is in the way of the airflow off the fan below it.

@raketensven3127 okay but testing OC with afterburner shouldn’t break it, if that happened than it’s definitely not worth the premium

Why did they just not have it 4 wide at the IO end, it would add to the structural integrity quite a bit.

As far as I read, the 5090 astral has only 8 heatpipes where msi suprim soc has 11. The noise levels and temps are better on suprim (memory is 6C cooler over the astral) while losing around 2FPS on average in performance since slightly lower boost clock. All for 400 USD less, so it is kinda no brainer to buy astral. I'm very curious about ASUS TUF, which has 12 heatpipes, but didnt find any review yet. It would be nice if you can get both TUF and ASTRAL and compare them against each other.
@BrunodeSouzaLino5 күн бұрын
But are the heat pipes the same thickness? You might be trading 6 for half a dozen in some cases.

Makes you wonder how good we're the KFA2/Galax 4th fan cards of the 30 or 40 series in the past. Or, the 50 series for Gigabyte, that one comes with a 4th one that's a case fan, or looks to be one, sitting full width on top of the rear screen opening, can be ran without it.

Hot spot 255° not great not terrible-Celsius, Fahrenheit or Kelvin?
@larsjrgensen59755 күн бұрын
255 is just because there is no sensor data available from the GPU. The number will likely be hidden away in the monitoring software with the next software patch.

11:00 I would disagree with the opinion of what the stock setup should be. I want tip-top peak performance, as much of it as I can get, right out of the box. Overclocking and tweaking fan curves manually can be tedious and time consuming, so, if the manufacturers have mode-selects, I'd prefer it be kicking as much ass as it can right away, noise be damned. The fans in the video didn't sound too loud anyway.
@1SaG7 күн бұрын
It's not yet listed on my go-to price comparison site, but Alternate-de has the Astral listed at EUR 1699. So basically 4090 levels of price but without 4090 levels of performance. What exciting times for GPUs we live in!

5:25 Yeah, the fan noise is audible, at least on headphones.
