In fairness the extra fan probably is very useful, perhaps even required in some cases to get the expected performance from the card, especially if they are using the same cooler on the hotter GPU as well. The bit I really don't get is how they split the fans up, the rear fan and one in front it really aught to be their own separate channels so you can tune the sound profile of having those two fans 'co-operating'. The other two fans can share and it doesn't matter or I guess the front 3 could all share and it wouldn't matter much as the noise is largely coming from the iteration between the two fans, so you only strictly speaking must have the ability to control the RPM of the rear independently of the front.

Funnily enough, that is exactly how the Asus TUF model is: there is clearly an empty space in the back of the cooler for a 4th fan but it is just not there. I would have thought extending the cooler fins would have made more sense but maybe that would increase the air resistance and flow?

Extra thick heatsinks also require higher static pressure (and thus louder fans) to provide any cooling at all. I'm stuck with moderately loud fans even when GPU is just at 30% load. It's 0 RPM in idle, or audible 1000 to 1300 RPM under load. Inaudible 800 RPM is pretty much useless for cooling. 3080 Strix.

Do have to remember he is testing on an open air bench - the results in a case will vary and bias the good results to towards the cards with more cooling potential, and the noise from inside the box is slightly less important as the box even with very little effort put into the sound profile will deaden it some. If you are having to choose between packing something like this or a FE into a smaller case (that this would fit in still) this probably outperforms and won't overheat or be as loud in comparison.

@Duracellmumus
@Duracellmumus 7 күн бұрын
There is no solution because this kind of fans are not capable to pull air or make negative pressure on the input side. Just make push on the output side to make a flow and the flow will drag the air at the inlet. The smaller gaps between the fins make the input side loading much worst.

@House.. Not at all with regular gaming, 500-520w loads. If you manually turn the fans up to 100%, they will reach ~3300rpm and make a lot of noise. While gaming, they seem to hover around 1300rpm in performance mode. While moving to 8th place in the Hall of Fame for Steel Nomad DX12 last night, putting the fans at 100% kept the core and ram under 55c for the entire run while WireView was showing around a 610w pull from the 12vhpwr cable. The cooling is capable of much more than normal gaming requires is the picture I'm trying to paint.

@@tg246 Very similar experience then. The fans on the card are capable of just over 3300rpm and do make some noise there, but gaming has never pushed them past 1500rpm on mine, which is still not much noise. With the fans at max, I can run 3D Mark tests and the core never gets to 55c and the vram stays in the 50s while it's pulling ~620w from the 12V-2x6

I disagree with utility of extra fan headers on GPU, mostly because it gonna look really ugly with the cables. No need to use them unless you lack headers on motherboard. I had 2 GPUs with this feature and never used it, but it would be useful if you deshrouded the card and placed 120mm case fans instead of the stock ones. As for case fans.... Fan Control is lightweight software with extremely flexible ways to set up fan curves. I got case fans speed adjusting depending on average between CPU and GPU temps. Asus software could do similar things, but it would also cause occasional BSOD when I'd switch profile.

The 2 extra fan plugs for adding fans is so the GPU can control 2 case fans and the CPU can control the rest. Standard fan control is an either or situation. Either the CPU controls the fans and they don't ramp up when only the GPU is under load or they are controlled by the GPU and wont ramp up when the CPU is under load. Plug the 2 case fans that mostly feed the GPU into the GPU and the rest into the motherboard and you have a hybrid control so both get fed fresh air when needed. That's a great feature that should be on all cards today considering the premium price.

So, even if they make a 5080 Ti using the GB202 die, it's still going to be insignificantly faster and likely $1,500. I've been using my RTX 5080 Astral for a day now, and it's impressively quiet, so I think the noise on some reviewers is related to old bios? even with all the fans running. While playing Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, the temperature stays at just 58°C. In Time Spy, I achieved a score of 36,040 with a core clock of 3255MHz and memory at 32,000MHz. The only downside is that manually overclocking causes coil whine. However, if you stick to the default OC mode set by ASUS (2955MHz core, 30,000MHz memory), the card runs fine without any coil whine issue.

A fan extracting air through a radiator tends to be louder. Moving it slightly farther from the radiator especially if it’s positioned too closely should greatly reduce the noise.

He did make a neat 3D printed shroud and fan assembly for the RX 5700 XT a while back - it's a shame it makes little sense nowadays for custom air coolers for GPUs like the Arctic Accelero etc . Useful back before Ampere when the FE cards were rather noisy and not cool at all.

I kinda expected it. From my experience all fans in tandem tend to be very noisy. If you set them at similar speed they work and you can hear them working, or set them at wildly different speeds, it is quieter but then the slower one blocks the airflow more than helps.

They lacked just a little height to match the thickness (Then it was possible to make it even narrower) so that the fans could be mounted on the side and the PCB wouldn't block the flow path. I think I saw somewhere an experimental video card where the PCB was narrow and long on the side where there is usually just a logo. found, quad-slot RTX 4090

Some people tested this card in Quiet Mode 4, the fans did not exceed 1100 RPM, the card is quiet, coincidence? Except that Performance mode and Quit mode are not switched when the card is turned off, because it remembers the last value.

Some constructive feedback: for the noise levels you might wanna scale the bars logarithmically for perceived loudness. So the bar length represents the perceived noise more intuitively. While "twice as loud every 10db" is not a perfect science, it's a great approximation.

I tried everything in cooling and quickly gave up on push-pull it always create an annoying whine because one fan will be faster or more powerful and force the other one into over-rotation, it would work theoretically if they were both perfectly synchronized but it never happens in reality so you end up with annoying frequencies being generated

As far as I read, the 5090 astral has only 8 heatpipes where msi suprim soc has 11. The noise levels and temps are better on suprim (memory is 6C cooler over the astral) while losing around 2FPS on average in performance since slightly lower boost clock. All for 400 USD less, so it is kinda no brainer to buy astral. I'm very curious about ASUS TUF, which has 12 heatpipes, but didnt find any review yet. It would be nice if you can get both TUF and ASTRAL and compare them against each other.

11:00 I would disagree with the opinion of what the stock setup should be. I want tip-top peak performance, as much of it as I can get, right out of the box. Overclocking and tweaking fan curves manually can be tedious and time consuming, so, if the manufacturers have mode-selects, I'd prefer it be kicking as much ass as it can right away, noise be damned. The fans in the video didn't sound too loud anyway.
