The car at 4:09 is BNSF 83 "Canyon Diablo" research and test car. This car started life as 1914 built Pullman buffet-library car 1338 "San Juan". In 1961, it was converted to Dynamometer car 5015 to replace the famous ATSF 29 Dynamometer car. Number 29 tested and measured the performance of all Santa Fe motive power built between 1911 and 1961. Steam engines like 3751 and 5000 "Madam Queen" were tested by car 29. With the retirement of 29 in 1961, Dynamometer Car 5015 took over the Locomotive testing duties. It later became test and research car 83 in 1973. It's still in service with the now BNSF, and was given the name Canyon Diablo.

I had quite a few of the same type of derailments on my layouts, both in N and HO scale. I had some great looking grey HO hoppers the short ones, I can't remember the road, and they would stringline with any real train behind them, or if they were being pulled at any more than minimal acceleration. I solved the problem with lead weights stuck onto the sides of the bottom bays. Other gems were depressed center flatcars, fixed with a couple of hunks of steel epoxied to the depressed area, and the one centerbeam car I had was always on the end of a train, no problems there. First derailment I saw in person was a Conrail train in the Walbridge yard at the end of '82 or early '83, that had two empty centerbeams flop over while pulling out of the yard to head to Pittsburgh. The scanner was very entertaining that afternoon. It fouled one of the mains for several hours. At least the Maumee River swing bridge wasn't being cranky that day.

Yeah, they seem to have a track engineering problem on those two curves. They don't realign them though, or maybe they can't with the highway overpasses all around.
@robertlapointe40932 ай бұрын
Was thinking the same, at least the third derailment VR has shown on that curve. Looked like a classic case of "string lining" (imagine a piece of string arranged in a curve on a table-top, then pull on the ends of the string - the string straightens out, or, in this case, the train gets yanked right off of the rails). Basically, the empty center-beam cars were too light to resist the forces of the engines ahead pulling, and the cars behind resisting being pulled. Probably exacerbated by the tight curve in that spot. The usual way to prevent sting lining is to build the train with heavier cars near the engines and distributing the engines along the train so all of the cars experience a lower and more uniform pulling force.
