Re: Creation of Avacyn: I'm convinced it doesn't work if you skip chapter 2 and the card is still face down. The rule is "406.3a. A card exiled face down has no characteristics [...]" Thus, a face-down card in exile is not a creature card (being a creature card is due to the card type which is specifically a characteristic) and chapter 3 will just put it in your hand. Feel free to respond with counterarguments that are arguing from the rules.

@@draconocor I guess chapter 2 isn't skipped per se -- it still triggered and will resolve. But, specifically using an instant speed effect to proliferate while chapter 2 is on the stack will put chapter 3 on the stack on top of chapter 2 and chapter 3 will resolve first. After chapter 3, the card will no longer be in exile, and chapter 2 won't be able to find it when it finally resolves and you won't lose life -- that part of the trick works -- you could get a creature into your hand without losing life, just not onto the battlefield.

It's worth mentioning that flickering Nadu resets the ability for ALL creatures. So you can draw a bunch of cards with Shuko, flicker Nadu with cards like Essence Flux, Ephemerate or Cloudshift, then draw twice per creature again. Since you get untapped lands, you also have the mana to keep going once you draw the next flicker effect. If you jam some pitch elementals, you can also play them for free, flicker them and let them stick around to increase your card draws per flicker cycle. At worst, you can use your flicker spells to cantrip with Nadu in play when there's no Shuko around to draw your entire deck.

One thing to note about Static Prison, you can always choose to sacrifice it. So if you want to wrath the board, you can sacrifice first so that the wrath destroys the thing that you exiled with it.

I think having multiple 1 cmc energy spells that give 2 energy might be surprisingly good and consistant. You could play Static Prison to slow down the opponent for a turn then use 4 energy with the red dino, the lightning bolt one or another energy payoff.

It is here as a power knob, however, because there is a benefit to having multiples in play, most notably when you pair it with cheap instants that can gain you life, Soul Spike from Coldsnap being the biggest potential offender. You could let one Necrodominance trigger resolve, pay a bunch to draw a bunch, pitch several cards to a Soul Spike or two, then refill again with the second one. You'll have to settle for one reload per turn, and being legendary has the side effect of increasing the counterplay of enchantment removal and is a slight check against devotion cards like Gray Merchant of Asphodel.

Static Prison triggers on precombat main and NOT upkeep; this is key in that it actually plays really well with the white X Energy Wrath effect, because you can see if coming and choose not to pay when it would otherwise get in the way of your board-wipe. Had this triggered on upkeep, I would agree with your assessment of the card.

In my opinion, Nadu should be S tier. Its floor is great (great stats, 2 for 1 if it gets removed), its ceiling wins the game. Just a shuko tutored with saga draws you massive amounts of cards: two for each creature you control, each turn.

I think Nadu is great, but that's not what its floor is. You are assuming you already have shuko in play. It's floor is being a 3/4 vanilla flyer for 3 which is pretty medium in the current modern format. Will that worst case appear often? Depends on the deck, but it's a case you need to plan with. Urza's saga has like 10 different amazing answers that all see play, you can't count on it searching up your Shuko without fail. It's kind of like saying Snapcaster's floor is a 3 mana 2/1 lightning bolt, or 4 mana 2/1 counterspell

With the reprinted Recruiter of the Guard you even have extra ways (on color) to tutor the Guide of Souls. 56:14

I feel like Guide of Souls is a better card than Rampager when you aren’t comboing, and with both Guide and Acererak being creatures, it’s easier to have a single tutor that finds both creature pieces of the combo. As for edge cases, the Guide + Acererak version doesn’t lost to shuffle titans, artifact interaction and costs 1 mana less to “go off” when compared to the Altar of the Brood version since you can cast both pieces off of the Primal Prayers.

Ghostfire Slice doesn't need to target the multicolour permanent to get the discount, which means it'll be an upgraded lightning bolt any time the opponent has a multicolour permanent. It's also devoid, so it can clear Sanctifier En Vec, etc. Seems like it has multiple useful sideboard applications.

The thing I really like about Birthing Ritual is that it allows you to search out a creature that is X OR Less, so you could do something like sac a Young Wolf to get another Young Wolf (Or a mana dork). Though the first thing that comes to mind is to try an abuse it with Renegade Rallier/Extraction Specialist. I think when it comes to playing around Amped Raptor, I really like the idea of running it along side Blood Moon (As all you really need is an Aether Hub to make it castable).

Through all of the card ratings so far, I've just been nodding my head in agreement. Then when you talked about Necrodominance, all that changed. Having a max hand size of 5 is a really, really, really big deal. Probably the biggest knock against it though is the lack of Dark Ritual in the format.

One thing about ghostfire slice is that you dont have to target the multicolored permanent to get the reduction. It could be a 4 of in the sideboard for burn incase your opponent runs scion, teferi, grist, wrenn6, or any new multicolored perm. Then you just have a one mana deal 4 which could be enough to win the sideboard games! Less of a removal spell, and more of a kill you faster punishing spell

IANAJ, but I believe -- A face down card card in exile has no characteristics, i.e. it is not a creature card (406.3a). Chapter 3 says you may only put it into play if it's a creature card, and since it has no type at all, it will go to your hand. But at least you wont lose the life or reveal it to your opponent.

The thing with the Eldrazi deck is that they could run lands like Corrupted Crossroads to just play any colored eldrazi that they want, so Linebreaker could fit in perfectly if you consider it basically a 1CC card. Also, there's maybe a "small eldrazi" deck? With the 1C eldrazi that gives +1/+1 to all your colorless creatures.

With Static Prison + the white wrath you could just let the prison die the turn you plan to wrath. My understanding of the rules for the instant speed proliferate on Creation of Avacyn is that because the card is face down it isn't known as a creature card to be put into play, so you would put it in hand regardless of whether its a creature or not without revealing it and then the 2nd chapter would do nothing.

Static Prison in multiples isn't ideal but at the very least you can use the second one to blink an opponent's best non-land permanent for a turn and use the energy it generates to keep the first Prison fed. A lot of decks can make due with just a valid tempo play.

Would primal prayers, greenbelt rampager and oltec matterweaver together just create infinite 1/1 tokens at flash speed?

Guide of Souls does not go infinite with Greenbelt Rampager and Prayers, because it gives you another Energy every ETB - so you play rampager for E, get E from its own ETB and E from Guide of Souls. You'd have to spend more energy to keep bouncing Greenbelt, but it would definitely be a big value engine/near infinite if you were drawing more creatures off Satoru. In fact, you'd rather have Satoru plus Guide OR Satoru plus Greenbelt, not both. Too many pieces relying on Primal Prayers, perhaps

Necrodominace is legendary because you only get 1 trigger of playing life to draw cards. If it wasn't legendary, having 2 necrodominace + a sheoldred would let you pay all your life, draw that many cards, double your life, then do it again

So disappointed in this set. I'm a burn mage at heart, and I was desperately hoping for a shot in the arm. I wasn't asking for anything crazy like price of progress or fireblast. I was hoping for something like a chain lightning, or a better two drop than eidolon. Elves got wirewood symbiote and priest of titania. Yawgmoth got sylvan safekeeper. Blue decks got their own version of blood moon. Any black midrange or control deck got a 3 mana sweeper. White got Orims Chant which can stop combo. What did burn get? Nothing. Barbarian ring flat out isn't playable, and Laelia costs too much. Red gets a bunch of energy cards for a mechanic with only one real payoff, but nothing that helps the most RDW deck of the format.

Many have explained why Wotc made Necrodominance legendary (unlike Necropotence, multiple copies of the EOT trigger stack in powerful ways). Necropotence wasn't Legendary because it's from Ice Age. Back then we had "Summon Legend" and "Enchant World", and the Legend rule prevented a player from casting a Legend if any player already had one in play. "Legendary" was not a keyword, and it definitely didn't apply to non-creatures.

Maybe Necrodominance being Legendary is a way to nerf it by preventing a player from stacking two of them as a backup ? I know on Arena extra copies of Necropotence are used as March fuel and here it could be used as Grief fuel too, but who knows
