We experienced one in Southern Illinois in 2009 and it appeared out of nowhere with zero warning. Ours wasn't gradual as this one appeared to be. Plus, it was over in just a few minutes. Tree totaled my car after I removed comprehensive coverage. Most of the trees were not snapped but pulled out of the ground with roots and all. I guess they called it a super derecho. People at the restaurant we were about to eat at were standing right up in the window until my sister told management to move them away. Drove home to in a car that was crushed and pancaked with my sister and nephew who were visiting for the first time. It took 3 hours to drive just a few miles after trying every conceivable route. Drove that car, my only car, for months and anyone who saw it was dumbfounded.

@@bg147 yes that was the super derecho (inland hurricane) Intense winds too. It was an odd derecho in how it behaved once it crossed the border into Illinois. It’s comma detached from the main line and spiraled into an “eye” and had high sustained winds for 20-30 minutes before dissipating.

The strongest winds I've been in was about 110 mph in Wilmington NC during hurricane Florence in 2018.. Hurricane Hazel of 1954 had winds of 150 mph in our state . I've been through more than 20 hurricanes here ànd several downbursts and floods . Nature is truly awesome and never ceases to amaze people . I have been writing historic weather events for over 35 years now . The Iowa derecho was definitely a once in a hundred year event . It was similar in intensity and duration to the labor day derecho that devastated upstate New York back in 1998 . That one also exceeded 100mph gusts .

I’m from the hurricane prone gulf coast. Cedar Rapids was hardest hit. The sustained wind speed was like a Cat 1 hurricane but you guys got wind gusts of 130 mph. Down here, a Cat 1 will usually only have wind gusts of 110, maybe 120. Sustained winds are the constant winds with occasional gusts with speeds much higher. The difference between a dericho and a hurricane is the duration and the warning time. Dericho duration = 40 minutes, warning time = NONE. Hurricane duration = 4-8 hours, warning time = days. Aside from the damage, you’ve got to admit it was kind of fun and exciting! Can you see why we have hurricane parties? My motto. Cat 1 = a whole lot of fun. ( sustained winds of 74-95) Cat 2 = I can do. (96-110) Cat 3 = I will flee. (111-129).

I got home and the 220 foot yard was full from fence to fence from the back of the property to the front of the house and, of course, the power was totally a dud for all of ten days. I used the battery powered hand drill till it went down to drill the branches and snap them off by hand lol that's how I got my driveway cleared to the back of the entrance to the house. horizontal wind it went on like a light switch and off the same way. I am convinced this was no natural wind at all. Iowa does not have derechos. This is truly rare. I eventually got a electric chain saw for when the power did come back on. My truck rocks. Possibly the worst derecho ever recorded
@bjroth3 жыл бұрын
@@jasolhe I'll bet. I had never heard that word before until a few months earlier than your storm, when a derecho came through Nashville a month or so after the March 2020 tornado. Having just moved here from California, the storms were something that amazed me; in California there are no thunderstorms, tornados, etc. I hope you're house was okay.

Do the building codes there require tie downs on the roof? I was impressed that the roofs weren't getting blown off. I had to watch the videos twice because I couldn't believe how intense it was. I don't know how you stayed so calm during it all because I would have been scared to death.

If you saw the first video, the roof behind the first row,... GONE! And no, I've never heard of a tie down for my roof. What is it?

that storm was nuts, literally hurricane force winds that just kept going...and going. Its almost worse than a tornado in some ways because its such a wide area and lasts so long.

The Vibe survived like the champ it is. I have one the same color, just no "moon and tunes" package. Did you get water in around the seems of the windshield where it meets the roof?

I was holding the main door shut of the oldest Jewish Temple in Iowa as the wind would suck it open. Rain would hit me in buckets. I too wondered when it would end. My small senior lady frame would fly out with the door. Now l head back up on the flat roof of Old Temple Judah-now Christ Risen Interactive Church ⛪️ to shovel record snow. Good job.

Whatever trees stood after this, they’ll for sure be around a long time. Curious how many trees your State lost in that short amount of time? That’s why I live in the Desert SW, the weather is very boring. No tornadoes, hurricanes, and forecast always says “Sunny.” Lol
@cjpietropinto92934 жыл бұрын
Some standing trees won't make it past spring. I have almost no hope for the tree in front of my house. It's lost more than half it's foliage and had several dead branches before this hit. And the one across the street is so damaged! Two of the three big branches are busted and the bark is stripped. Then there's the bugs. The bugs that used to reside in many trees are attacking the few we have left. 100% tree damage. I've heard, we lost, or will lose, about 60%. I lost three of five and one of the remaining two is uncertain to survive.

Two reasons. First, most iowans ignore storm sirens because they blow them for every little thunder storm that comes thru. So, we thought this was just another iowa storm. Second,...No Time! I live on the SW side of CR. The sirens went off at 12:28pm. We didn't even have time to grab the garbie from the curb before it hit. I had enough time to turn off my tv and other electronics (I had a feeling we'd lose power) and tornado close all the windows. We lost power in under a minute after the sirens ended. Shingles flying like chinese throwing stars, trees shedding their limbs. An eight inch stick did my windshield in....no amount of money in the would could have convinced me that leaving shelter was a "good" idea.
