Hi all welcome back to another video Dereck Reacts back at it again! This time around we take a look at for the first time ever "Un Peu Plus Haut, Un Peu Plus Loin." PATREON request said I should take a look at these three stars: Jean-Pierre Ferland, Céline Dion and Ginette Reno sing this song. Stunning and very emotional, I had to take a break midway, see if I got to finish this reaction!

This song was written by Jean-Pierre Ferland in 1967 or 69 and its about a love rupture. He wrote that in a hotel room in Paris while beeing completely demolished emotionally. He calls it an Hymn to hope. Gave that song to Ginette Reno and the rest is history

@@carlbernaquez3449 It's also about climbing - in position, in fame, climbing so far up that you leave the ones you love behind, going where they cannot follow... and being all alone on top, afraid of falling down if you try to reach for them, while at the same time, being so awestruck by what you've achieved! All alone at the top, seeing the wonders of the world, not wanting to let it go, but losing what you love for it. Being an international star, constantly touring around the (francophone) world, adored by thousand of women, did not help Jean-Pierre to keep his long-distance relationship alive.

This was part of a Celine Dion show for the 400th anniversary of Quebec City. As part of her show, she did several duets with several important Quebec singers, probably none more important than Jean-Pierre and Ginette. As others have mentioned, Jean-Pierre wrote the song. It was Ginette's song. This is Ginette's son. (That's why everything shifted in her court, as you say.) Jean-Pierre also sings, but he's what is called in French a chansonnier, meaning the texts of his songs are more important than his vocal abilities (which have indeed been affected by age). PS - What you're seeing from Celine isn't sadness. It's emotion. Ginette was young Celine's idol. And this song... this song isn't about the words so much. They're about pride in being Quebecois.

Ginette had everything for her, jean pierre whrote that for a show on top of mount Royal the sky broke open, it’s a song talking about someone going up to heaven and not able to come back, it’s a sad song, but a great song, she could have had a carer like celine with rené Angelil, but she was stuck with lovers that took adventage on her and i think she had a kid too at the moment, so she pass on the international career, but she sang all her life she is like our diamant only for us… sadly you wont be able to listen all jean pierre ferland repertoire, but it’s incredebly rich and soo great !

@@alliedseawindvoilier2394 You are right, René Angélil wanted to give Ginette Reno a singing career as the one Céline Dion has, but Ginette did not have the freedom to do it. Ginette Reno has the voice and the talent fairly equal to Celine's.

There is a big emotional story also between Celine and Ginette. Because at first it was Ginette who was René Angélil’s protégé, she had the voice to go international and this was Angélil’s project to do so but Ginette didn’t want to and decided to pursue her career in Quebec , Canada leaving Angélil with his international dream without an Artist to pursue his ambitions. After that he couldn’t find a singer like Ginette, he was loosing everything until he met Celine when she was 13 years old, then he figured out he had the possibility to pursue his dream with Celine. On her side Celine wanted to be an international artist…. The rest is history.

The song, to me, has always been about someone wanting more, wanting to be bigger, wanting fame and fortune and leaving a most cherished one behind in the process. She wants to climb higher, go further. She says let go of my arm but keep hold of my hand. Then later, without meaning to, she's the one to let go of the hand. She cries out 'Look, I'm so high, it's beautiful''. I love you, I'll come back to you, if I can climb back down without falling. I still love you but I don't see you anymore, I'm too high, you're too low.

This song can have a lot of different interpretation, someone's passing, how life can change two people and then separate them, etc. There is also a political/nationalistic uundertone to the song, it was written during the quiet revolution here in quebec. In that decade, Quebec emancipate itself from the catholic church; schools, hospitals became public, education was made widely available and a lot of the public institutions we have today were created at that time. French-canadian became proud of their culture and their unique heritage in nord america and the english superiority over the french speaking part of the population became less and less important. So, Jean-Pierre Ferland was in a way celebrating every opportunity his people had nerver have and now had but at the same time, thinking about the fear of losing a part of ourselves in all those changes.

Yes, Jean-Pierre Ferland is the songwriter of “Un Peu Plus Haut, Un Peu Plus Loin”. He is a good singer but not the best male vocalist, so yes, Céline did overtaken him but she has such powerful voice. Jean-Pierre Ferland is an awesome songwriter, he has written so many hits over all the decades of his career. He has written hits for himself first but for others too like Ginette Reno and a very young Céline Dion. He is iconic here in Québec. And he has a knack for writing those deeply emotional songs. Now, he is mostly retired (he is 87) but no one has forgotten him, far from it. Ginette Reno is still singing.

Also at his age, his voice isn’t what it used to be. That’s why he kept on announcing his retirement. He kept missing the stage so he did a few comebacks. My dad repaired some of his antique furnitures back in the 80’s-90’s and Jean-Pierre invited him to do some horseback riding. My dad declined the invitation but he still talks about how nice he was.

I think there is many different way to interprete the lyrics of that song. For me, it sounds like people you love can not always follow you through the course of life as sometimes, we are not at the same level of consciousness and can not make the moves and decisions we know are the best for them or vice versa. It’s about enjoying the goodness of life and learning to let go, from my point of vue 🤗

Hi Dereck! I'm from Montreal and wanted to let you know a little about the history and trilogy between Ginette, Céline and Jean Pierre.. JP is a famous poet and song writer, one of the greatest in French community. He sang Un peu plus haut un peu plus loin decades ago and sang it with Ginette Reno. At that time, she was Rene Angélil's protégé (way before Celine Dion). René had big plans for Ginette but she declined, wanting to remain more local. Céline crossed roads with René later. It took all those years before we seen Celine and Ginette unite to sing along together..

Ginette Reno is our most beautiful voice. Jean-Pierre Ferland, one of our greatest song writers. It was such a magical moment

And seriously, your tears feel like ours when we first saw this. Ginette Reno presently only has 10% of her hearing left. It probably already was the case back Them.... And she still giving show she's a godess.... And by the way, it's Ginette Reno and not Janette Reynolds...... You make me laugh so hard with this name!!! 🤣🤣🤣
