Hi Dereck! In Southern France where I was born and live, especially in and around Nîmes (and Arles), a "bodega" is a temporary bar that serves "pastis" (aniseed and liquorice aperitive liquor from Marseille), beer and sangria to customers who stand and drink in the streets, particular during the local "feria" (bullfighting festivals), especially during the long bank holiday Pentecost or Ascension weekends in May, drawing hundreds of thousands of tourists, and also in late September. So the song is about those moments when the crowds gather to drink booze, chat, meet with friends, eat paella and dance in the narrow streets to this kind of festive, brassy songs (Gipsy Kings music, mainly, as they're locals from the Arles area, especially Les Saintes Maries de la Mer in Camargue in the Rhone river delta on the shores of the Mediterranean where you can see pink flamingos, white horses and black bulls). You'd love the area and the Spanish-influenced culture and music down there! That's my home.

The complete name of the band is "Les négresses vertes" not only "Les négresses" ;-) Big memory for me, I worked on one of the last gigs with Elno (the singer), he died few days after (unfortunately...drugs...sad....).

La version plus "péchue" avec les percussions ajoutées c'est la version de l'album remix qui est aussi beaucoup passée en radio, c'est sûrement pour ça.

Nice vid, it brings back this song to the surface, I used to listen it when I was only 13 back in the early 90's, so full of memories. Dereck, I recommend Claude Nougaro with "Nougayork" (1988), a return to success for this singer at almost 60 years old. There is everything we love, sinthé, chuivres, a very marked drums, an electric guitar solo and a powerful voice. To listen live of course (I recommend the extract from the 1998 concert).
