Carmen is the most performed opera in the world. "L'amour est un oiseau rebelle (que nul ne peut apprivoiser)" (Love is a rebellious bird - ...which no one can tame) is the most famous song of this opera. It is sung from the first act. Obviously Stromaë very cleverly transposed these words to draw a parallel with the emblem of Twitter which is a blue bird and thus show the dark and vampiric side of social networks.

This kid is something else. Extremely talented. Clever, full of puns and play on words, double-entendre. Tough to translate but absolutely delectable in French. I'm discovering most of his songs. A true pleasure.

The clip of Carmen was done by Sylvain Chomet, an animation genius mostly known for his feature film The Triplets of Belleville. Many celebrities are caricatured during the Twitter bird ride sequence, including Barack Obama, Queen Elizabeth, Justin Bieber, Kanye & Kim and Lady Gaga. The character that gets a zoom-in first is the french rap artist Orelsan, that got cancelled by the Twitter mob around that time for his edgy song "Sale Pute" (Dirty Whore) in which he speaks from the POV of a scorned lover wishing physical abuse on his ex-girlfriend. The final sequence is also reminiscent of the 1982 film Pink Floyd: The Wall, in which factory-produced children end up in a meat grinder operated by a monstrous teacher.

When you say he's almost rapping you're not far off ! If you look at the credits, Orelsan, a french rapper, is listed as his cowriter. And Stromae was a feat in one of the songs ("La pluie") of Orelsan's last album. You should actally check some of this album songs, it go away from pure rap to go in a more rap-pop, stromaesque direction. I would recommend "La pluie", "Paradis" and "Tout va bien", they're the ones I think match the more your style. "Basique", "Rêves bizarres" and "Défaites de famille" are more on the rappy side but they are soooo good. And the icing on the cake is that ALL the music videos are AMAZING, especially "Rêves bizarres" and "Paradis" (seriously they should have won an award for this one). Keep up with the great content ^^ Have a nice day.

One interesting part of the song is when he is singing “C’est comme ça qu’on s’aime et c’est comme ca qu’on sommes!” In english means “It’s like that that we love and it is like that we are” but the end of it has a double meaning by the rhymes it means also, “C’est comme ça consomme!” In English, “it’s like that we consume”
@LadyArachnea3 жыл бұрын
the melody & the rythm are sampled from the Opera "Carmen" ... the most famous French Opera in the world .. Masterpiece .. Indeed Stromae did a sort of remix of the music ... You should give a try to the orginal version .. this is the song "L'amour est un oiseau rebelle"

Stromae came into fame with his song "Alors on danse" but since that song, It seems all of his song always carry a deep message. The interesting or visionary thing is that all the fame and histery due to his success made him make a complete burnout and this is the reason why he left the stage for years now ! He said he felt like "the thruman show" movie
@mr.merleb Жыл бұрын
Notice how at one point in the video the bird becomes so large that it switches places from being on his shoulder to literally becoming the one who is carrying Stromae. So deep and shows how eventually fame and social media takes over and controls you. And at the end, the bird resets and the cycle starts again....

Thank you so much for this great reaction! As you say, Stromae is so creative! What a pity Stromae did a burn out for giving too many concerts around the world, he is so good! This song is a modern homage to the very famous french opera "Carmen" , already a pure absolute masterpeace! But Stromae is as you say a genius, and his words are also very creative! Belgium generously gives to France so many Talents, that we are full of recognition and respect !!! We 🇫🇷 💖 🇧🇪 ! Thank-you so much Dereck, see you soon ! (... and PS: Don't hesitate to react to Orelsan, as he is a rapper also very creative!)
