Stephanie was in the original Broadway play The Wiz as a teen. She sang the song first and then Diana Ross in the film. It started with Stephanie.

Yes she was robbed of that opportunity...even though she originated the role on Broadway. Stephanie embodied Dorothy much more than Diana from the superior vocals, to being 13 years younger, 6 inches shorter, and a better musical actress.

The movie with Diana Ross was '78. The Broadway musical Stephani starred in was '75. She released the song in 89 and it was a big hit on R&B radio.

You are correct. The original was recorded in 1975 as part of the Broadway cast where she played Dorothy. She re-recorded it in the early ‘80s.

Stephanie was the original in the musical. I've heard her sing this live multiple times and she's always been amazing. Diana actually did a really great job in the movie. She hit notes you will never hear from her anywhere else. I love both versions.
