This was absolutely the most helpful video I watched on glass cutting. I just need to removed a large piece from a bar for cleaning but it won't come out in one piece. None of the videos I watched before left me feeling very confident that I could do it without shattering it. I'm sure I got this now though. I appreciate the detail. Well, note that he uses cathedral glass, which is pretty easy to cut into shapes. Opalescent glass is much harder to cut into complex shapes due to the different weight of the pigments used - eg. white is pretty stubborn to cut curved glass pieces. Basically opalescent glass has many different colors, all with different molecular weights and different tolerances for breaking.

Idk if your still interested but your need specialty carbide or diamond bits, then you jus do it slowly with even pressure and water for lubricant. Whilst turning the drill in circular motions. It helps, once u poke through one end to flip the glass around and drill from the other side to prevent oysters in the glass

Great video. It’s worth noting, that cutting narrow strips, using the square, that normally, the cutter is pulled towards you, as demonstrated. Whereas, cutting shapes, the cutter is generally used away from you - obviously, so that one can have better vision of the shape.

I use a pistol grip and that's not how I hold it. I wrap my fingers and thumb around the grip and place my index finger over the top pointing toward the wheel. I then place my other index finger on the flat part of the cutter just above the wheel. You can make seriously accurate cuts with no strain to your wrists or hands. 40 years doing what you are doing. I have taught quite a few people and they are into it now. I like some of your techniques. I have not seen them before and they are helpful. Thank you.

Hi Derek, excellent tutorial, many thanks. I have a query re your use of the wider head pliers at approx 08:43 when breaking the curved piece - it appears that the head of the pliers grip across the scoreline in order to break the glass which doesn't quite compute for me. It may be that I'm not observing correctly but I would have though that they would grip just one side of the line in order to do that. Subscribed btw, thanks Dave
@DerekHuntArtist
@DerekHuntArtist Жыл бұрын
If you are using the large breaking pliers, the jaws of the pliers span across the score line and apply even pressure to the top of the glass. The bottom of the pliers apply a pressure directly on the score line, which help to create the neat fracture into two pieces. Thanks so for the subscription!

I have a question, if you don't mind. We have a huge antique mirror that we want to cut down. are there special considerations for cutting old thick glass? Thanks so much!
@DerekHuntArtist
@DerekHuntArtist 7 күн бұрын
Hi Millie, it is possible to cut mirror on the non silver side, up to a glass thickness of 6mm. Be very careful when cutting large pieces of glass, especially if you have not done this before. It may be wise to take the large mirror to a glazier to have the glass cut down to a new size.

@@DerekHuntArtist Thanks for your reply Derek. It didn't answer my question though. What I was trying to ask is why do you oil the tip of the cutter? What does the oil do in the glass cutting process? Does it just lubricate the cutting wheel? Does it create a cleaner cut? Or something else?
@DerekHuntArtist
@DerekHuntArtist 9 күн бұрын
@@icepotato2800the oil helps to lubricate the wheel. In medieval times glass cutters had small diamond tips to score the glass, but wheels do a better job. Oil does not affect the glass cutting process or change the surface properties of the cut, it just helps the wheel to spin smoothly 🙂

Hi, I need to cut 1.5 inches off the bottom of a mirror 6 feet wide, so very long thin strip. Should I ball tap all along the entire score before snapping, or just at the end like you demonstrated. I get one shot at a clean cut! thanks.
@DerekHuntArtist
@DerekHuntArtist 4 ай бұрын
Just tap the end to get the run started then carefully break down and away ( like breaking a piece of chocolate bar)

Breaking glass is akin to breaking a ginger biscuit, don’t be worried, another point, never go over a score mark you’ll ruin the cutter.

Just a question about repurposing glass that may be a little older. I was told by a professional glazer that the older the glass is the harder it is to cut, is that true?
@DerekHuntArtist

Yes, sometimes old glass can be more tricky to cut

You just score one side of the glass only :-)

Can you cut a thick mirror glass with this glass cutter?
@DerekHuntArtist
@DerekHuntArtist 11 ай бұрын
With practice you can cut thicker glass up to 6mm. Anything thicker and I would suggest you get that cut professionally 🙂

I have a tool that cuts a circle for me. I’m trying to use the circle and remove the glass around the circle. What is the best plan of action to do that? Cut the circle then tap around it?
@DerekHuntArtist
@DerekHuntArtist Жыл бұрын
Yes, cut the circle then tap round it to fracture the perimeter, then break away sections round the circle by cutting small lines away from the circle at intervals, then tapping the score lines to help break the outer section away.

@@rajennaidoo7546 my challenge is to make 36 square for a check set maybe if i dip the glass in hot water and then put it in aerosol at -20'C it would break so i had to use my radial arm saw and a lapidary blade the squares should have 5cmx5cm in alternation for the chessboard

@@DerekHuntArtist You're welcome. Recommending this experimentation: get the Gorilla glass from broken iPhones, since they bend significantly without breaking, create a basketball size metal ball structure then stain the cut Gorilla glass and bend onto the structure to create maybe the first 3D stained glass structure (the design may be beach ball colors but it'd be great if it looks medieval like St. Teresa of Avila's gauntlet (the gauntlet that inspired Marvel Thano's gauntlet :-) or maybe create three, the 3rd would be stained glass NBA Spalding or Wilson ball :-) God bless us artists.

If you ran a glass cutter on bullet resistant glass a few times, then fire a few rounds into the glass, then attempt to kick the glass, would the glass hold? Or would it fail? If it would fail, how thick would the glass need to be to prevent entry?

Unfortunately I can’t answer your question. Specialist glass types such as Bullet proof glass and fire resistant glass have technical advisers who specialise in answering these questions🙂

@oz93666 10 ай бұрын
well it seems to work OK , but I'm no expert . I had problems with tungsten wheel ( I didn't realize you had to oil it lol) , There seems no price difference between the two , if I had to guess , diamond cutters became feasable recently with availability of cheap industrial diamonds used also in cheap core drills etc ... Of course no need for oil with diamond no mess , put "diamond glass cutter " in KZbin search ... great video by the way. @@DerekHuntArtist
