Hi Dr Barbieri, I'm a derm resident who has wondered about this: Do you consider dry eyes to be a side effect/associated with topical retinoids, and do you counsel patients about this? Any suggestions for management? thank you!!!

I don't, except in the setting of irritation from using close to the eyes. For those who get irritation with topical retinoids near more sensitive skin or skin folds (e.g. nasal ala), putting a little thin layer of emollient first can help.

hi, i just finished accutane and was wondering if it's ok to start using adapalene gel immediately as a maintenance treatment? or is there a downtime i have to wait before starting ?
@DrJohnBarbieri7 ай бұрын
As the goal of isotretinoin is often to have a remission of acne, I typically suggest to patients to try a period off acne treatment. However, some do like to start a topical retinoid for maintenance and I think this can be begun right after stopping isotretinoin.

At what age does acne goes away after teenage years in boys?
@DrJohnBarbieri Жыл бұрын
For women, about 50%, 30%, and 20% will have some amount of acne in their 20s, 30s, and 40s, respectively. For men, about 40%, 20%, and 10% will have some amount of acne in their 20s, 30s, and 40s, respectively. So while acne often becomes less over time during young adulthood, for many it can persist, or even begin, in adulthood. pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/17945383/

one side effect that I get from adapalene, is that my skin is a lot more oilier, what can I do ?

While I cannot speak to your specific situation, for those with oily skin, a salicylic acid toner or cleanser is often helpful.
