Was diagnosed with rosacea over 40 years ago. Glad to say I’ve been off all rosacea medications for many years. What works for me: no hot water on my face; no fragrance in skin care products or laundry detergent; protect face from wind/cold; wash face twice a day (if I leave washing it too late ie. on weekends my face will sting); be super gentle if rubbing face ie. putting on moisturizer; use mineral sunscreen. Hope this helps. And don’t give up!

@@Allergic2broke I used Paula’s Choice Skin Recovery Moisturizer for many years; it has gotten too expensive. A few months ago I started using La Roche Posay Lipikar Lotion (Lipid-Replenishing Body-Lotion Anti-Dryness-48hr Hydration) on my face in the morning (I know it says body but I can use it on my face); in the evening I use La Roche Posay Lipikar AP+M Triple-Action Balm (safe for newborns per the label). I know LRP can seem expensive but they are BIG bottles so they’re WAY cheaper than Paula’s Choice. FYI I’m still using PC Skin Recovery Cleanser as it’s not too expensive for the big bottle. When this one’s empty I’m going to try a LRP cleanser. Good Luck!

I keep a rosacea diary in my phones calendar for over a decade. I write every night what I use on my skin and which actives. I also put flare up and it’s easy for me to see what triggered it. It’s been a habit now that I’ll probably never stop but has been the most helpful thing I’ve done at getting my rosacea under control

This rosacea made me sooo incredeably confused when i was young. I remember going outside in the winter and shivering because of the cold, yet at the same time my face felt like it was on fire! It was so confusing to be cold and hot at the same time. I remepber trying to make my face more cold to "cool it off" but that never seemed to work. I really didnt know what was wrong with me

I have had rosacea since I was a small child and it got worse as I became a teenager and young adult. I think it's underdiagnosed honestly because so many people don't go to dermatologists! Thanks for the video it was good to watch. For me, I use azelaic acid for the bumpiness and gentle products for the redness. But still need therapies such as laser therapy etc to improve more.

I have however found out I was doing everything wrong. Scrubs, were probably the worst. I am using a prescription topical cream. That is really helping.

Dr Ellis, this was a wonderful video, thank you. Made me feel a lot better. I’ve been researching rosacea ever since I got diagnosed a year ago and I still learned some things! Plus, I like knowing tret is not necessarily off the table. My dermatologist says she doesn’t prescribe it to anyone with rosacea. :( but I feel my skin can handle it; I’ve already made amazing strides with my rosacea and I’m willing to wait until the right time and take it very slow, so I’m willing she’ll let me try or someone will. If it doesn’t work, ok, but I want to try little by little, maybe with a retinol first and then adapalene and then tret, or just with the lowest strength tret available.

It just came out of no where, so I was searching for more information and knowledge to store in my toolbox that may help me in future breakouts. I've had Rosacea since I was an 11-year little girl. What I have is just a little of redness on my cheek bones and chin with 2 blood vessels that started to appear recently. However, everytime I finish my workout I immediately put a cold washcloth or splash my face with cold water to calm it down and to decrease the temperature of my skin. It helps ALOT. What helped me a lot too is moisturizing twice a day especially on winter. I cleanse my face and moisturize it at night and in the morning I just splash some cold water and follow with the same moisturizer and sunscreen. It approved wonderfully my redness and the appearance of my 2 vessels. Also, ALWAYS moisturize on damp skin.

No one could give me an answer, now looking back it makes complete sense. I have severe flush drinking alcohol, in heat or cold (I live in Northern Canada) and have unexplained adult acne. Wish I had known sooner but at least I can do something now.

It’s super interesting w chemical sunscreens. I know people who have rosacea and do fine w them. I wish I could, but they are just mostly a no go for me & it took me a long time to accept that. I just do better when I use 100% mineral as my first layer. The one exception is I can do a combo sunscreen for reapplying once & seem to do that well. But on bare skin? Too irritating. I used to exclusively use zinc/octinoxate combo sunscreens never realized how much underlying irritation I had before I switched to all mineral. Also Definitely hear you on going slow w new products. I don’t even introduce even more than 1 product at a time, even if it’s not an active. Speaking of actives, i can do adapalene just fine. It’s the first thing to go if I have a flare tho. I have also found that azelaic acid has been absolutely incredible. I wish I tried it years ago.

Being on an oral antibiotic has been key for improving my cystic Rosacea. I also have it in my eyes. After taking Minocycline for a number of years, I developed dark streaks on my fingernails from cuticle to tip, first on just one nail, then spreading to others. Also, I developed a dark grayish blue tint around my mouth, especially above my lip. I was afraid it was circulatory at first. A dermatologist said it was from the medicine & switched me to Doxycycline. After 6 months or so, I’ve started to have a lighter discoloration. I hope it goes away completely. It’s bad enough being older (70s) & having lip wrinkles & acne scars & now a “mustache.” Thanks for your videos. New subscriber here.

Dr Ellis, thanks for this video! 1. Can we use vitamin A (adapalene or tretinoin), azelaic acid and PM cream with actives like B3, oat or licorice at night time, one after each other, without compromising their chemical efficacy? I have been doing that with adapalene and I did not see any problems in terms of irritation (I am male with a tendency to mild rosacea). After cleansing, I like to apply first product on damp skin, not on wet or fully dry, to preserve water on skin. Do we need to avoid smudging of these three layers? I would use azelaic acid in the morning, but its texture (Skinoren 20 % cream) is not very compatible with a sunscreen and in general I avoid using many products in the morning. 2. In summer, my face tend to sweat (especially forehead) after cleansing and applying products. Does sweat have any negative effect on skin during the night if it is mixed with creams? Many thanks!

Love your videos and insight Dr. Ellis! I am trying to adjust my skincare routine with better and actually effective products. I have been using an "organic" skincare line inclusive of tons of products. It's fun and all and looks pretty, but I worry it's unnecessary and not worth the hype. I have very sensitive, dry, rosacea skin (which is why I love your videos since it seems like I can relate to your skin type!). As of now, I'm thinking of just having a simple cleanser, getting the Skin Better Trio Rebalancing Moisture Treatment (sounds awesome), and using sunscreen consistently. However, I am tempted to also try the Skin Ceuticals vitamin c serum and also incorporate a hyaluronic acid serum, but again, maybe I am overdoing it in my thinking, especially since the Skin Better Trio Rebalancing Moisture Treatment seems to include vitamin c and hyaluronic acid in their ingredients. I just don't know what is "right!" . I want anti-aging, but I also know my sensitivity and rosacea are the big things I need to focus on. Thank you so much.

Dr.Sam, I really enjoy your videos, however, I do not agree with the fact that we should only focus on treating the symptoms without finding the cause. Recent studies show that both gut as well as the intestine may play a serious role in developing rosacea. I myself suffer from rosacea and it turned out that I have severe issues with my gut microbiome and since I started to take medication, my rosacea has almost disappeared. So I think it’s definitely worth trying.

We are constantly learning more about rosacea. I’ve actually published on the relationship between the microbiome and common skin diseases like rosacea and eczema, so I totally understand where you are coming from. We are always looking to learn more about etiologies of cutaneous diseases. The point I was trying to make is that many patients think their skin disease is their fault or it’s rooted in something they should have complete control over, but that’s not always the case and I want them to be able to move forward mentally so they can focus on getting better.

For me, switching to a mineral based, rather than a physical sunscreen, has helped tremendously with redness and burning. It’s drying though. Still haven’t found my ideal sunscreen, mostly because of the dryness. Also, I just had to give up Ceylon Cinnamon. I was using it, liberally, everyday on cereal and apples, and couldn’t get the redness to calm down until switching sunscreens, discontinuing the cinnamon, giving up oranges (developed a real fondness for oranges because it was the only food I could taste during COVID and for a few months after COVID). Lastly (so far), and hardest of everything taken in orally, hot liquids (even hot water) result in my cheeks going from a light rose color, to hot pink. Of the non orals - and by FAR the most difficult of all - exposure to sun. The sun makes my face miserable. More than anything, it hurts when it’s hot pink. At times feels like my cheeks are melting. Thank you for this video. I’m enjoying your channel. PS: This condition is still rather new to me (more than a year, less than two). Sometimes I wonder if Tazorac gel has made my skin ultra sensitive, and caused this condition. Only because I never had skin issues before. Was lucky to have had really good skin, before this started, anyway. Also wonder if an out-of-control hyperparathyroid condition might be exacerbating this.

I suddenly started getting a scabby, pimply red face 3 years ago, age 40 when I moved to an alpine climate. I stopped drinking red wine and coffee last week and my skin has cleared up immediately! My skin is still red and other issues, but I haven’t had 1 pustule or flaky sore nose all week and my skin is softer than it has been in years. Treating digestive imbalances is just as important as skin care, as well as committing to giving up those triggering foods and drinks.

I live in a country where tretinoin is not available, so I get it from Spain or Greece. And every time I see a derm (last time because of perioral dermatitis), I always show my tube to the derm, letting them know what I use. Well, all dermatologists were totally pissed, telling me to stop immediately, how can I be so careless to use such an irritating cream and it causes rosacea and perioral dermatitis! I just can't believe that in a country where dermatologists are accessable, I still need to gather all my information from youtube. Thank You for being here for us, because I am always discouraged to be using tretinoin after a doctors visit.

Hi Dr Sam I developed rosacea during perimenopause, but I had a background of eczema and sensitive skin my whole life. Prior to this I could tolerate a small amount of fragrance in skin products, but no longer. I had a variety of things going on initially with a lot of flushing/redness, eye irritation and slight thickening of the skin on the nose. I went to my Doctor (I live in the UK), but I knew what it was having been a Registered Nurse for nearly 20 years. I mostly got it under control using gentle products and alternating evenings of azelaic acid and low dose retinoids - working up to using tretinoin on the alternate evenings. I do use a mineral spf on my face everyday, as part of my ongoing care. Clonidine oral medication helps keep the flushing at bay. Things were going fairly well and I was managing my symptoms etc until last year. Stress is obviously one of my triggers and I had more flares as a result. So much so I dialled back on the retinoids, going from tretinoin 0.05 to retinaldehde 0.05 instead. Things have settled down a good bit and I've increased my retinoid to 0.1 retinaldehyde, with a view to going back onto tretinoin if possible this year. I'm now menopausal - I have not had a menstrual cycle in three years and I'm 49 (I had a lot of gynae issues throughout my adult life which contributed to an earlier menopause). I'm disabled and have been for around six years, so I wasn't nursing by the time the pandemic hit, as those masks would have played havoc I think with my skin. My Doctor knows I was a nurse for a long time and let's me manage my rosacea fairly independently. I only go for changes to my prescription if I have exhausted all my other ways to manage it. Spicy food I avoid and I have identified through trial and error both oxybenzone and avobenzone, as ingredients my rosacea prone skin won't tolerate. i can use some of the newer generation chemical filters available here in the UK or internationally. It's become just something I have to be aware of when deciding what to eat and what to use on my skin (lots of patch testing required lol), but overall I am managing it and it's not as fiery as it would be without that careful management. I cover the persistent redness and visible veins with makeup and carry on with normal life tbh. Best wishes. ps I don't consume alcohol due to my pain medication, but it would be a trigger for me if I did, as I used to flush even before the rosacea was obvious. x

Hormones play a huge role in Rosacea yet it's rarely mentioned. I feel that since rosacea presents itself on the face the medical community doesn't take it seriously and passes it off as a vanity issue. If you had that level of redness and heat anywhere else on the body they would be looking into why there was such an extreme inflammatory response. When I hear " try and avoid your triggers" I want to scream! Sleeping is often a trigger. How do you avoid that? What scares me the most is that my extreme flares are often accompanied by tinnitus. In my experience Rosacea is systemic inflammation that needs more research and attention.

@@j_stuchbury2123 I have tinnitus and vertigo, but haven't noted a flare when I have a bout (my tinnitus and vertigo are intermittent). I do think it needs a lot more research too though. Sending you best wishes for calm skin. x

@@lorainemcgillivray77 sorry to hear about your IBS as well. That is stressful enough, to then be compounded with Rosacea I think I need to check my ranting. @@j_stuchbury2123 I wish you every success in finding something that helps. I definitely think the low dose clonidine helps (it reduces flushing) and may be worth speaking to your Doctor about. In some ways I think rosacea is a form of auto immune disease like eczema, hayfever, endometriosis etc (all of which I've had). I'm currently managing it mostly and haven't had an active flare for a few months. I do have chronic redness and visible capillaries from previous bouts. I can also get textural changes in the centre of my face and eye involvement at times. I think any skin disease affecting the face can be difficult to live with and cause a bit of "ranting" lol. Sending you best wishes and hopes for calm skin.

I moved from Florida to Japan in February of 2021, before leaving my skin was clear but during the flight my face got so dry and extremely red. For the next 3 or 4 months my skin got worse and worse. If felt like my skin was burning, but got better during the summer when it is more humid in Japan. But starting in January of this year it started again and seems to be really bad in February. I sent images to dermatologist and they believe it is GRANULOMATOUS ROSACEA. But the product they recommended is benzoyl peroxide gel 5 % twice a day until I can visit a dermatologist and get a proper diagnosis. Question is that is not recommended by some videos I have watched.

I never got dryness or irritation from the .05% but did get intense redness and heat. Since I’ve had to go back to my old.025 tretinoin and limit .05 to once or twice a week. 10% azelaic acid from zeal sea a Korean brand has helped ALOT. It’s very similar to Paula’s choice but more than 1/2 the price and doesn’t have salicylic acid in it. It has licorice root, centella and more in it. One of the best over the counters I’ve ever used

Any makeup I wear melts off very quickly, at my worst episode I had to get an ice pack and even that melted within 10 minutes. I can't wear makeup, I can't even try to make myself look less ugly. It's unfair, it skipped a generation from my grandfather to me, my older sister never had any issues. I was just the dumping ground for all my family's genetic downsides. ADHD, depression, anxiety, rosacea, nodular acne, tourettes, OCD, excessively large love handles, monkey toes*, hearing difficulties, sound processing issues**, a 6th main vertebrae which causes my lower back to protrude more***, small sinuse, and I'm a non-taster. Sorry this has been making me upset for a very long time. *: Index and middle toe and longer than big toe **: I heard that you said something, but I have no idea what you said. So in my effort to figure out what you said, I'll plig in words and it almost never sounds right. ***: my back looks like it's about to curve on the lower back, but instead there is a small, heart-shaped area of my lower back caused from the tail bone.

I have always had issues with my skin. When I was about eight, the doctor diagnosed me with a skin condition he had never seen before, but he believed it was a form of shingles. I was put on a 15% benzoyl peroxide wash and it cleared up. I went a few years with unproblematic skin and when I turned 11, I developed rosacea. I have tried so many different things, doubted my doctor's analysis and thought maybe it was regular acne instead, treated it as such, and it made it worse. I'm so lost and so unhappy. My face looks ugly. The only thing that makes me feel better is cold water and moisturizer. 😕 I hope all my fellow rosacea sufferers are doing well and have found something that works.

My rosacea is severe and the Rosacea Diet SIGNIFICANTLY improved me. Then I began a food diary and learned my triggers. On an animal based diet my lizard skin and cysts/nodules all magically disappeared. It's been 2 years and if I eat my triggers more than once it starts coming back. So many people have food triggers and don't even know it. If you have autoimmune issues I guarantee you have some food triggers, whether they're your main ones or not. My main trigger is MINT mouthwash, it makes my throat close up. And garlic in food, which can give me actual hives. Many never realize the warning shots for years, which can be as inconspicuous as acne, and then when they're older they get diagnosed with Celiac's, arthritis, rosacea, even life threatening nut allergies happen to people at completely random ages. For me I know it was because of all the nightshades and gluten (pasta) I ate for every single meal when I was 18 and broke. All of these autoimmune disorders are similar involving skin, joint, and gut problems. Rosacea is tied to gut issues. The link continues to be investigated
