My mom has this (86/dementia) for years. Earlier this year the podiatrist that trimmed her nails said, vinegar. Plain, white vinegar soaks. My mom won't stand for soaks, so I put vinegar in a little spray bottle and spray at night. WOW! I can not believe how well it works - her nails actually started growing out too.

It's wonderful how very thorough you are!!! I'm a masseuse and I & my clients have had success with pure tea tree oil (essential melaleuca oil) - make sure it's not diluted with other oils. Like you said you must use it every day until it grows out. It definitely breaks through the biofilm - use it to wipe off water spots off of a chrome facet and you'll see why! I'm so glad you talked about getting rid of your shoes. Most people don't think that that's where the fungus can live and reinfect. Maybe wipe the inside of your shoes with tea tree if you can't part with your shoes. Love your well-researched and easy-to-understand videos - thank you!!

After having toenail fungus and general foot fungus for years and years, I finally went on terbinafine last October. The first thing I noticed was how quickly the foot fungus went away, no more scaly itchy feet! Now a year later, my big toe nail is almost completely grown back out and looks completely normal again! I never had any side effects from the medication and I wish I had gone on it years ago when the nail fungus started getting really bad.

Helpful vid-thanks. After a nail trauma (ski boots / racing as a uni student) and almost 23 years of dealing with subsequent nail fungus in my big toe (in grown nails, thick, yellow - basically the full “medical photo” level infection - I’ve really put some effort in over the last few months and it’s been life changing (for me). My GP advised just ignoring it as he felt the medication was too risky given the infection wasn’t dangerous, but he didn’t have to deal with years of pain, and having to pull in grown nail out! (no longer my GP). So in case it helps whoever reads this, here’s what’s working for me: 1. I trimmed as much of the nail on both toes as I could stand without causing injury. 2. I use Daktarin (brand) miconazole 20mg liquid-brushed on twice daily. This softened the infected nail gradually and I was able to remove more and more to expose the nail bed (took 2-3 weeks). It was easily the least expensive bottle at around $20 (I’ve used 1.5 bottles in 3 months) - I put it on all toes. 3. I have used a file to really thin the nails (all toes, but especially the big toes). I do this probably every 4-5 days. 4. Morning and night I use a stiff nail brush in the shower, scrubbing my toes with a medicated shampoo (Head & Shoulders) as my daughter discovered it was great for fungal acne - so I thought “why not!” If it’s also anti fungal 😀 5. Twice daily before brushing the liquid on the nail I use a regular nail polish remover to fully clean off the previous application (in conjunction with a file once a week). 6. I use an athletes foot cream (also Daktarin brand) at the first sign of anything on my feet, making sure NOT to apply between the toes as I read that can be counterproductive given it may create a moist environment. 7. After the topical (brushed on) liquid is dry, I apply Vicks rub to my toes. 8. At every chance I get I take my socks and shoes off, and I know from experience that when the weather warms up and I can use the pool (I live in Australia) the chlorine in the pool usually helps too 😀 I know this all sounds like a lot, but honestly it just takes a few minutes morning and night, and after 3 months effort I look down and don’t recognise my feet as they look so normal. The only abnormal part is that the nail is only 50% as it’s yet to grow out, but the really bad thickness, lifting, discolouration, and all discomfort have gone! This may not work for you, but it appears to be working for me. My philosophy has been “habitat destruction” - basically “trim, scrub, file, poison, disinfect, and air-ate, and repeat” to make living in my nail as uninhabitable as possible for nail fungus! If you’re reading this, keep going and my advice is just become obsessed with it for at least a few months and hopefully you’ll start to see a motivating change!

Thank you so much for sharing, I appreciate the effort and honesty. I too had a major infection that I let go for years; a combination of not knowing what it is or how to deal with it (before the had the internet at our fingertips). I ended up going on the oral medication for 12 weeks and I was 100% cured for years! However, 18 years later, it’s back! My feet and my toenails are not happy. I’m going to follow your lead and try to look after my feet for a month, if I don’t see any major change, I’m getting back on the hard stuff.

This is one of the BEST videos I have come across regarding nail fungus: clear and comprehensive. Also the information about the yellow Listerine was a jaw dropper! I noticed an incredible and quick improvement after using this Listerine on my infected toes. However, instead of soaking my feet in a tub with Listerine, I dabbed some cottonwool with it and placed it directly on the nail until it dried (minutes). It worked like magic. Was battling with nail fungus for decades, took Itraconazole for many months and after a while I got the feeling that it had stopped fighting the fungus (maybe f got used to it?). Now I am using Excilor and it seems to work very well. Having stopped the oral medication, I now drink a tea made of ginger, cinnamon and cloves. I guess cloves have an effective antifungal property. I hope my experience can help others, as I was at my wits'end, not knowing what else to try to combat this stubborn fungal infection which was due to stubbing my toe (and it bled profusely) in a hotel. My podiatrist insists that I no longer have an infection, but I am taking no chances for it to recur and will continue to use terbinafine /Excilor and cloves tea for several months. Reinfection is very common. Thank you for taking the trouble to share your knowledge with us and I shall send this video to many friends. Bless you.

As a doctor I’m surprised you said you don’t have to treat it. If people don’t at least try to treat and maintain foot hygiene that’s how they wind up on those shows with terrible foot problems. It’s better to try to at least manage the symptoms so it doesn’t keep getting worse or spread. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Besides that I thought this was a very good educational and thorough video.

You could use Lysol Spray daily for shoes desinfection or vinegar on cotton balls or piece of paper towels and let it sit to dry. Don't need to throw your shoes. Lysol spray your bathtub. Sanitize clippers with Isopropyl Alcohol after each nail. Sanitize your Pimese stone after each use in a small glass jar with Chlorox of 2 Tbs or so for 1/2 cup.

My nails definitely look brighter but not sure if fungus is going away yet. It's interesting that you brought up inflammation since I was recently told I have several food sensitivities so it makes me wonder if it could be related? I have had a problem with fungus in the past ever since I received an injury that got infected and the podiatrist removed my toenail. So I have started some home treatments. It was also extremely painful! I regret spending all my money on it and not pushing my doctor for terbinafine tablets sooner (they are really pushy to use topical treatments in the UK with it spread across multiple toes). After that awful experience I went on terbinafine and the nail grew back. I only have it in the corner of my toe now but I can’t go back on terbinafine while on accutane as it would be too much on the liver. My toenail looks fine and doesn’t have really anything thickening and minimal discolouration compared to how it used to, it just crumbles underneath at the edge. I am now using a topical treatment but honestly not seeing any results.

Only put it on for 2 -3 minutes per day, then wash it off. I have some slight discoloration on both nails, but just on my big toes only, -- I think I'll try bleach. I also read, like this lady says, you can use Vicks Vapo Rub, or baking soda. I think it's best to scratch the surface of the nail first, to allow what you use, to work on the fungus directly.

Your input was very interesting. I’m 61 but I’ve had what I thought was fungus on my big toe nail on my left side, and why I say my left side is because you had mentioner that people who have Psoriasis are more prone to it. I don’t have Psoriasis but I do have its cousin, eczema. Now hwhy I said my left side is because when I have a break out which is usually once or twice a year it always happens on my left hand and no place else. But what I have been doing to treat it is put some extra virgin olive oil in a cup and take 3 or cloves of garlic depending on how much oil u use. Crush the clove of garlic with the flat side of the knife and add it to the oil. Let it sit 3 or 4 days until the garlic permeates though the oil. Then stat applying with a q tip once a day. I’ll tell u that I did it for about a month and the discoloration was gone. My other toe nails on that foot started hardening also so when I used the oil for a month they got back to normal, and what I mean by normal is that they were no longer as hard as they were. They were never discolored, only the big toenail was. But after about a month the color on the big toe faded and started to look normal again. But after about a week to 10 days it did come back. I’m going to try it again but this time I’m going to do to for a minimum of 3 months and maybe applying it more than once a day. The only reason I posted this is because I did see results. Something that I’ve lived with for 10 or 15 years probably will take a lot longer to get rid of the natural way might take even 6 months. It’s a trial n error thing. I have time and I’m not self conscious of it
@warpedweft9004Ай бұрын
Tea tree oil works. I had been using it for 6 months when I read about some other natural methods and switched to one of those, as tea tree oil is expensive, and has become more so recently. The other methods didn't work, and the fungus returned within a few weeks, so I'm back at square one. I'm using it neat (not everyone can tolerate that) and you have to use it every day until the nail grows out, which is nearly a year on a big toe.

I finally got rid of my tonail fungus I had for some 15 years, and many years of trying, home remedy. I decided to add the terbifine meds. I cut all my nails super short. The big toe nails were so crumbly and separated, that I removed them completely. While taking the terbifine for three months, I insisted to my doctor, i go another three months because I did not want all the effort wasted on it coming back. I continued all my home remedies. including, vinegar foot baths. Roasting my feet under blue light 450nm, and using both tea tree oil as well as camphor oil in a mixture on my feet. After 5 months, it is pretty much gone and even my big toe nails are back. I continue to use vinegar baths, blue light, and the essential oils as a preventitive measure. Long story short. Make sure your on the meds for 6 months not just three. Cut your toenail short often. You want as much fungal nail removed as possible every week. Get a large blue led light 450nm to bath your feet in the light while watching tv and moviies. Bath your feet in a foot bath One cup vinegar every day, or very often. Use essential oils like tea tree oil and camphor oil every day. Using the meds for 6 months and adding all the home remedies, you will be fungus free. For the big toes consider having the big nails removed if you can before starting the drugs and home remedies.

I was on Terbinafine for 5 weeks and had to stop because my heart raced. The doctor said that she never had a patient experience a racing heart but I did and it was very scary; my heart raced for weeks after I stopped taking Terbinafine.

My husband has had troubles for a number of years; has been using Vick’s Vapo Rub and is seeing/feeling improvement. Tossing out his footwear would be a stretch as he is a construction worker and needs specific (re: expensive) boots…..he has several pairs and switches them out, because he also has sweaty feet. Yikes!

If I make an appointment with my dermatologist, why do I need to make multiple appointments if I have more than one concern as to not “stress out” my doctor? If we make the appointment, pay the copay, we should be able to discuss concerns. Making 3 appointments for 3 issues is not practical.
@heatherncasey20049 күн бұрын
Agree. It takes months to get into a dermatologist around here. Once I get in, I am giving them my list of issues all at once while I am there. Such an odd thing for her to say.

Pardon my French, but toenail fungus is a BITCH. I've fought it for 30 years. And it's not only the embarrassment; it also ends up hurting because the nail is compromised. Lamisil helped me but I've had to use it several times. I have one toe that keeps getting infected again, so I treat it with a topical solution every day for maintenance. I've also changed my shoe habits. I throw out shoes that are more than a year old without exception and I wear them as little as possible (always off in the house). That's one thing no one tells you: if you clear your fungus and keep wearing the same shoes you had while you were infected, you are much more likely to get it again. You almost have to burn your footwear to the ground and start again.

Thank you for this video. I’m sad there is nothing new for treating this malady. I used prescription topical Ciclopirox nail lacquer religiously for over a year. It was a complete waste of time and money. Also tried with no results: Vick’s, listerine, and vinegar (on separate occasions). I’ll try tea tree oil next.

My situation seems a bit different. I have nail fungus on 1 hand only. My dominant left hand is fine, my right hand nails have all of the signs including a very irregulat surface, darkening, lifting away from bed, crusty yellowish white stuff underneath & thickening My Dr gave me cyclopirox (8%). It seems to be a very vefy slow healing process. Seeking stronger faster method.

I'm based in the UK and the Doctor prescribed me Mycota anti-fungal cream for my toenails. I wish I was told it would take months to see results (because I stopped using after weeks - thinking my Doctor prescribed me ineffective medication)
@veronicaivanova Жыл бұрын
I'm always surprised how much you push for oral medication for fungal infection. In the UK this is prescribed as a last resort, if the topical treatment isn't working, exactly due to the possible liver damage. I had toenail fungal infection a couple of years ago and had to use the topical treatment for a year or so. It's a long process, but, based on the comments here, people who have used the oral medicine also have to wait a year to recover sometimes.
@morgianasartre6709 Жыл бұрын
Topicals are part if the guidelines everywhere but their use depends on how many fingers have been affected and what percentage of the nail is affected. If a 100% of all your nails is affected - it's just not useful.
@Godblessed27 ай бұрын
They don’t “push.” The doctors here DO make you try topical first. My new doc said “they don’t work very well.” Mine didn’t. Such a waste of my time and $ only to be put on the pills anyway. Wish I had started the meds sooner. My scalp and toes weren’t getting better. They were worse on topicals

I see many places offering laser treatments for nail fungus. Is this an effective treatment?
@keithyakouboff87554 күн бұрын
I could not finish watching the entire video, so I wanted to just throw this out there... My one nail is thick, ugly, and wire clippers cannot cut through. I suspect it's on the verge of falling off, but then underneath will be another "baby" nail in the process of growing. I am not sure how to apply oil or oregano or anything else, since there is no way to get under the new nail, and even the old one is still partially attached. Now, I've seen oil of oregano, tenactin, vinegar and bleach as effective remedies. Here is what I've done -- but thus far it's been like firing sidewinder missiles at Godzilla, i.e., no effect. 1) Vinegar (not watered down, 5-10 mins). I soaked my foot in a small bowl of vinegar. I'd do this once to twice per week. 2) Bleach. I'd make a roughly 50/50 mix of bleach and water, and soak my foot in it for about 5 mins., again, once or twice per week. 3) OTC remedies, which were a total waste of money. 4) I have no medical insurance now, but when I do, I thought of going to a doctor and requesting they remove the nails in question and just clean out the affected areas. But, until then, if I can find a cure TODAY, I'd very much like to.
