Brilliant. I don't care how it's done he is simply mesmerising to watch and listen to. The movement and pace are all part of it. Derren is remarkable!

Did anyone notice that Darren had to fire gun B himself after Chris O'Dowd had chosen gun A? Otherwise the sequence would not have come out the way he had written it down on the back of the check - CDBAE.

Its the way he answered A darren felt he was going too choose E so he had too interfere lol

That's what he wants you to believe. Here's how I believe he did it. He gave three embedded commands for gun E/gun 5 before they even started firing, thus ensuring that Chris would treat gun E differently, (assuming Chris responds to embedded commands). He also touches the contract after the sequence is known, so it is very possible that he added the sequence to the contract AFTER the sequence is known. The fact that the sequence is printed as part of a printed and signed contract makes this seem even more likely to me, because it is basically Derren's way of psychologically making it seem like it is impossible. How could he get a signed contract that is printed with the correct order after the trick is done? It's actually not that hard, and that goes double if he is using an invisible assistant under the table. As long as Chris doesn't pick gun E, the trick should work at this point no matter what sequence Chris picks. At one point, Derren reinforces Chris's choice not to pick E by telling him that "most people will next pick one of the of guns on the end, either A or E." Most people don't want to do something if they are told that "most people" will do it, thus reinforcing that for that choice Chris won't pick A or E, and even if he does he will likely pick A because it is mentioned first and because of the emphasis Derren puts on both letters. This is also why Chris is primed by this comment to pick A after that turn. To keep Chris on track to not pick gun E and also to add a bit of drama, when there are only three guns left and Chris picks a gun that is not gun E, Derren uses what is known as the psychology of the Monty Hall Problem. In the Monty Hall problem, a participant is told that there is a prize behind say one of three doors. The participant picks one of the three doors. The presenter then opens one of the two remaining doors to show that there is nothing behind it. The presenter then gives the participant the choice to either keep the door that they originally chose or swap to the remaining closed door. Mathematically, it is always better for the participant to CHANGE doors. The participant had a 1 in 3 chance of getting the right door with the first choice, but has a 1 in 2 chance of getting the right door if he changes after a door has been removed. However, psychology has shown that almost everyone will stick with their first choice. When Chris has picked gun A, Derren knows if he removes gun B, which is empty, that will cause Chris to double down on his choice when Chris is given the option to swap to gun E. I could be completely wrong on this, but that is how it appears to me that Derren did this particular trick. Of course, maybe if I watch the trick more than one time more options will jump out at me. It's still a fairly ballsy trick. It all relies on Chris being a normal person who is susceptible to embedded commands, who will fall victim to the psychology of the Monty Hall Problem, and who doesn't want to be the kind of person who wants to do what "most people" will do. If at any point Chris picks gun E the trick will be ruined. But by mixing NLP with stage magic and by doing things like stepping in and picking gun B himself - something I suspect he ALWAYS planned to do, but does in a way that makes it look like he is desperately covering up a mistake, he makes the trick look like it must be all NLP. Just my theory. And maybe there was more NLP involved that I missed. On first viewing, I didn't see any priming for the first choice of choice C, but after C I can see that Chris was most likely to pick either B or D, and on the third choice he was definitely primed to pick A, and Derren actually controls when he picks B by picking it himself. So it wouldn't have taken many hidden moves for Derren to have actually primed the order. It's just a lot easier to hand off the contract to an assistant and have the assistant print the order after it is known, and then spend the entire trick essentially priming "not E" and then pretend on several occasions that you've messed up or need to intervene and also have the audience waste effort trying to figure out how you primed every single other letter in the sequence.

@@hollybigelow5337 The Monty Hall problem is better imagined if the problem with the 3 doors is enlarged to 100 doors. So, it's a 1/100 chance of selecting the right door first. After selecting, 98 incorrect doors are spun around, leaving the 'selected' door and 'some other' door. The probability of 1/100 (1%) is still with the 'selected' door. But now, the 'other' door's probability of being the correct one has rocketed up to 99%. That's why it's always better to switch, no matter how many doors in the problem.

If you watch his fingers starting around 4:50, when he says 1 he holds up his index finger, which is the finger he then uses for B, which suggests he wanted him to start with B

I figure the Monty Hall aspect is supposed to be cover, i.e. he's purporting to have done it to "help" rather than because he wanted to manipulate things. It didn't really play correctly here though. Esp after Chris implied he was trying to get the loaded one...

I hate the way magicians micro-manage and control every single part of the interaction 😂 Like, I get that that’s their whole thing, but it feels like in a social sense some little wanker grabbing you by the sleeve and dragging you around while blathering words super-fast at you in this stressed tone just to off-balance you. It triggers my aggro response or something, I think I might have just yelled CAN WE CALL JUST CALM DOWN A MINUTE

He's awesome, but picking up B when the guy chose A was kind of cheating.
@crowd3r862
@crowd3r862 5 жыл бұрын
Not really cheating because he said in the contact that if it was fired in a particular order then he would pay the full 10,000. I wouldn't consider that cheating, I would consider it generous.

@@crowd3r862 No the contract was to pay them if it was fired in any other configuration - he didn't pay them the money. To be honest, I was expecting him to say that instead he would donate the money to SUTC but alas, generosity from Derren is almost always rigged.
