Anybody lately heard of or seen a "snag?" It's when you load a stand on the fly and the elevator door pops open after it picks a stand a few feet then drops it. It will take off a floor-hands toes or foot if it's under the pin. It's usually caused by a worn elevator door spring. I never saw it happen but we used to have snag drills. I'd shout "snag" after loading a stand just to scare the guy tailing pipe, to keep his feet clear of the pin.

Greig Grey I've had it happen once. but the driller was half blind and was going foot flat I managed to shut the elevators but when they hit the tool joint the door blew open with sparks launched the pipe 3 foot up then dropped on the rotary table mats and made a perfect cookie cut right through the mat. that's why you use a rope on the floor and you stand behind it or you will loose your foot 😂

It happens, yell snag and try to hang on the horns to try and close elevators. Working for my dad, derrick hand better yell snag or else looking for new job!! RIP Dad.

As far as dangerous drillers, I worked for an idiot once that didn't lower the elevators down clear of the collar subs when we were tripping in the hole. The subs weren't torqued, so when the motor-man was spinning them up the subs would unscrew since the elevators were tight against them with the spring open. I'd shout down then tighten them by hand, then he'd do it again. If he'd have unscrewed one all the way, the spring would've shot it up and killed someone on the floor. I quit the dumb ass

Just ignore them. We're not all jerks. Most "Oil Field Trash" are good guys.

I enjoy up there as well, and I missed a few to begin with but with a bit of practise, its pretty easy. Just always check yer harness before ye wear it & dont be afraid to shout or tap the pipe if you see them doing something wrong on the floor coz believe me they do- even the driller, he once left the link tilt extended & no one noticed until about 10 foot from the board. wooooooooooah , shit myself that night

Hah-! I missed a whole row when I first started working the board... Terrified that the belt wouldn't catch me. Takes a while to get used to it but it's the best job on earth.

These comments below are a rarity.........admitting a mistake in the oilfields. So often these oilfield videos are filled with comments belitting the people in the video itself. Comments, like ...... "slow", "I was faster than...", etc. etc. Obviously, these who write such comments do not hurt for lack of ego or more than likely.....well just lying/bluffing. And oh yes....I droped a few when working in the patch.

I haven't missed a stand yet, knock on wood. I'm way more scared of losing a stand than I am of falling.

I see no motivation to study accounting and finance as you can get 2-3times bigger wages without experience. Now I starting thinking that it would be better idea to join oil rig crew instead of wasting 4years while studying accounting and finance...

Every derrick hand has dropped a stand across. Wait till you drop a stand of drill collars across!! Did it working for my dad, once!!! Was not pleased. He come up to help. He was the driller!! Don't think he said anything nice for 48 hours. Miss the hell out of him.

Just saw your comment. If you are still interested in knowing... It starts to happen around 1:10 and then the floorhand looks up and laughs. You can see the stand move and jump and definitely hear it hit the derrick and/or other stands. It happens. Triple drilling rig and looks like the weather is pouring rain making surfaces a bit slick. I've seen it happen a few times on single drilling rigs and service rigs where blocks were moving super fast and time is everything. One time I seen it on a service rig that ran double fast line... the blocks move so fast the derrickman has to have extraordinary hand-eye coordination to close the elevators. I hope this helps.
