At one point in time, this Celtics "superteam" led by Brown and Tatum was actually very mediocre. Entering the 2021-22 season they were power ranked by ESPN as the 13th best team in the league they got out to a misserable 18-21 start. Brad Stevens then went out and got Derrick White. In the remaining games, the Celtics would go 33-10, earning a 2 seed and making the NBA Finals. Since then, Boston has looked like a perenial contender. When you look at when the Celtics went from mediocre to a contender, it was when they acquired Derrick White. He is the key that unlocks this team's potential. His impact can not be emphasized enough.

I think the problem with the term “role player” is it might be perceived as a negative connotation. This years Celtics are stacked. They have 5 all star caliber players. Derrick white is over looked because of Tatum and Brown’s ability to take over games. Porzingis can also drop 18-24 points on any given night. Nothing to take away from Derrick white though. This video is a perfect breakdown of his game. Derrick white might be one of the best role players in NBA history and that’s a good thing!

People forget that he was pretty much the guy on the Spurs for a couple of years (granted, they were not good). He reminds me of Klay. I know, I know. The comparison isn't exactly a 1 to 1 parallel, but it's close enough for reminiscing. Here's what I mean: On defense, Klay is stronger and taller while White is a bit more agile. What makes them defensive menaces, though, is positioning and plain old ball-hawking. They're not elite athletes, nor are they freaks of nature, but they will ALWAYS be in between you and the rim. On offense, Klay is obviously the more dangerous shooter but White has a bit more versatility. They're both great shooters, so they both stretch the defense, but while Klay gets his shots off almost exclusively off ball, White is more skilled off the dribble. Different games, yes, but also close enough to affect wins in a similar manner.

master of recovery is a great way to put it. I also think of it as he is the best defender when he has lost leverage.... Beign many possessions between an offensive and defensive player start 50/50, and often when most defenders are beat they give up because they no longer have the advantage/are at a disadvantage, but with White there are so many times he is clearly beaten and still comes up with the stop or forces his opponent to mess up. And while sometimes teamates come in to help, many times he recovers and makes the stop all on his own.

As someone who watches nearly every celtic game, there is one important thing to add: he hits the shots you need him to hit. When the other team has momentum, or the possession seems like a waste, dwhite is always there to bail us out. @JwebGuru5 ай бұрын
Draymond, like White, had superstar impact. I don't understand why we can't just call him a superstar (or White for that matter). Sure they need to be in "the right role" but it's not like superstars don't--people intuitively understand, for example, that high usage shot creators who go join a superteam will usually see their offensive impact dip, because there's only one ball. I don't see why that automatically makes them more valuable than guys like Draymond and White who get *more* valuable the better your team is--to me, you need both kinds of players to succeed and one shouldn't be automatically classified as lesser than the other.

White is a role player, in whatever role you need him to be. I believe, White is one of the most, not just all rounded, but consistent players who rarely makes a wrong decision as a combo PG. He may not flash his handles like a traditional PG but he surely is simple & efficient with his way of playing. He's good enough as a combo guard not to give up his dribble when pressure is on, while he is swift in creating thru a drive or PnR, or pass to open man when trapped.

The Celtics are a superteam. They have 4 all stars (Tatum, Brown, Porziņģis, Holiday) and then White who was on the second all defensive team. The team is loaded. Probably the best lineup since the Durant Warriors (KD, Steph, Klay, Draymond, Iguodala).
@Jonteponte715 ай бұрын
I just checked and from what I can tell Celtics have exacly two all-stars 2024. Tatum and Brown. Brown wasn't even first team. No one else on the team was close. Instead I have been hearing Tatum is so bad he might not even be a top six player in the NBA. And Brown missed all-nba because apparently Haliburton was much better than him even while playing hurt for the last three months of the season. Also Brown can't dribble with his left hand. So I'm not sure what you are trying to say. If Celtics (barely) had two all-stars in April, I'm pretty sure they still only have two? By the way. The players on those warriors teams where *all* actual all-stars.
