You probably have figured out by now that Orla, Erin and Clair , of all the Derry characters, had the most unique speech style delivery, (which is why I picked them), but I’m looking forward to a review on all of them. That’ll be AWESOME!!

Thank you for pointing this out to viewers. She spent her youth between Derry and Greencastle in County Donegal (about 30 km across the border in the Republic of Ireland). She certainly has an edge when it comes to this specific dialect!

When I first met my husband it was quite difficult to understand his accent. Met my in-laws in Derry for the first time and it was even more difficult especially for non English speaker like me. Now after 10 years of marriage, I have a slight twang of Derry accent so I am.

Left "the province" in '75 or thereabouts at the age of five but went back home every summer holidays. I can hear the accent as clear as a tiny wee bell in my head, and when I hear it it makes me feel all warm, loved and fluffy... and it falls out of from time to time when I am under stress (or drunk). Ach, a quare situtation, so it is.

Your videos are really nice. I haven't ever heard of Northern Irish accent before, a friend recommended me the TV show. I was in Dublin this summer and I thought that the Derry accent can't be too hard for me.. yeah well. As a non native English speaker, I wouldn't have understood anything without subtitles :D The actor of Erin Quinn has her accent also in interviews, so it's not played which makes it very authentic. I learned to love the Derry accent because of Derry Girls and your videos are absolutely amazing to learn understanding their accents! When I speak with English friends and colleagues, I try to freak them out by saying "how" as "hoy" (no diphthong), etc.. :D

Hi, glad you are now educated about the wonders of the Northern Irish accent (: The actor, Saoirse-Monica Jackson is actually from the location where the series is set so she has something of an advantage! Glad to have you on board with the channel, any requests?

@@AlsActionEnglish Sorry for my late reply. I figured out that she is really from Derry and she is my favourite :D Content which would be nice for me: words and phrases which are differently used in Northern Ireland and England (e.g. the famous "wee") Are there Northern Irish tv shows or movies you would recommend?

Oh, and another thing that I noticed in the clip you asked about was the way she says "his. " It seems Northern Irish accents very often, if not always, say that more like "hes," in a way. More of an "eh" sound than an "ee" sound. What do you think? Do all Northern Irish accents have this feature? If not, which ones don't?
@AlsActionEnglish
@AlsActionEnglish 4 жыл бұрын
Expert analysis. I was considering adding this as a third 'feature' in this clip though decided against it, mainly because I'm not exactly sure how widespread it is within Derry, or NI as a whole. I'd be interested in your observations as I know you watch many actors from all over here. I absolutely agree about variation, just have no clue how to pin it down, if in fact it is even possible. In short, I cannot answer your query - let's open up a dialogue here.

Al's Action English As you know, I’m a huge fan of Northern Irish accents. 😂 I have noticed this in I think every Northern Irish speaker I’ve heard, but it’s still unlikely I’ve heard all the accents in NI, so I can’t really say.

@@kingdollop-head743 Fair enough, doing a survey of everyone would be too onerous! Vowels are so hard to qualify. You're bound to isolate someone once you try and put certain accents in a "box".

So what about Nadine Coyle saying Floiya? Plus my colleague pronounces down as ‘dye in’ but I don’t understand how you can make a one syllable word into two syllables. Surely accents are more the varying pronunciation of the vowel sounds (and whether you sound the R).
@AlsActionEnglish
@AlsActionEnglish 4 жыл бұрын
Excellent insight, thank you. There is so much more to the Derry accent than these two features - feel free to check out Michelle, Orla and Clare's offerings. Folks from Derry just do make it into two syllables, I don't know why - it's just one of those nuances 🙂
