I lived in Germany not too far from the dam that the Dambusters bombed in the war. One winter it was so cold the whole surface froze so hundreds of people, me included, were able to walk on it. I was walking on it for over an hour that day - amazing memories also of summer walks in the forests surrounding the dam.

They actually bombed 3 different dams.

I remember visiting in the summer of 76 when the water was at it's lowest. My Grandad told me that he remembered seeing the church tower protruding from the water. I discovered that up until 1947 the church was tower was intact and stood out of the water. They blew it up saying it was a hazard. I couldn't think how it would be considered hazardous to anyone, but then I realised that it would be a hazard to stupid people climbing on it and such.

Seems strange that you have to loose two pretty villages for natural progression, could have flooded Manchester / Leeds / Sheffield, no loss there.
