Nah she definitely finessed!! So she can get someone to cover the rent smdh! Honestly one thing you will learn in New York is you either hustling or getting hustled. Thank God that test turned into a testimony.

I enjoyed story time. Your voice is so soothing. Please continue to share. I had some rather regrettable roommates early on. You see things about folks you never do until you share a space. Hearing your story time has a personal appeal because it shows more of your personality.

I can’t believe she lied like that, but then again as someone who grew up in NY, ppl definitely make crazy living situations work! I’ve lived out of NYC for about 13 years and I’m never moving back lol! I don’t blame you for feeling the way you do!

Definitely relatable , I’ve had a similar experience . I feel when people know you’re in a vulnerable state they’ll take advantage especially when you’re young . But situations like that just help us to grow into being better than what we’ve experienced with or in others.

Omg... sounds almost like my experience. I had lived with an older flatmate here in western UA for nearly 4 years. The rent was super cheap but the amount of emotional and physical abuse towards the end of my stay was WOW... She was a pig, literally! With a cat she could barely take care of. She had been trying to make me feel like her pet is MY responsibility! Eventually, I discovered she had stolen from me. One of the neighbours revealed to me that my landlord had kleptomania and something even crazier than that... I discovered she had been diagnosed with a mental disorder. Shortly after that, I started to plan my escape. She wouldn't go out of the house cause she couldn't bear with a simple thought I could leave her one day. She didn't have anyone she could rely on. No family members of hers cared to help her. In the end, I told the woman I'm moving back to my hometown to take care of my parent. I left the same day I told her this. I benefited from paying low rent quite a bit, but I'm gonna tell you this - NEVER live with the elderly!!! Run as fast and as far as you can!! These people won't change! Most of the time, they are abandoned by their families, deeply traumatised and dependent on whoever lives with them. They gonna start manipulating you and taking advantage of your kindness. They always want it on THEIR terms because you're in THEIR house.

I did a room for rent in an elderly woman's house. The house was huge(5 bedrooms, I stayed upstairs, she stayed downstairs). She told me no guests, no illegal activity and no drinking. She was constantly checking the bathroom I used and wanted me to eat with her. No! I stayed 3 months and bounced. She tried to trip about my security deposit but she ended up giving it back. Never again.

I'm very sorry for your unfortunate experience in NY, my city. I think you being so young and not a native, that person took at advantage of you. I'm so sorry. I love my city but I understand the horror stories. I'm glad though you learnt a valuable lesson, however I hope we haven't scarred you. I love your content.

"New York got some nasty people" & "New York scarred me for life" 😂😂 I think just big cities in general. I've had 2 horrible experiences and now I have some great and clean roommates. The reality though nothing beats living alone. No matter how great people are. Being in your own space is the best peace of mind anyone can have. I also feel people are never going to be as clean as you want them to be.

Wow. Thanks for being vulnerable and sharing your story. It's unfortunate to come across someone like that. Not everyone from New York is the same; just like anywhere else. It's hard meeting good people. I believe that lady was also looking for more than a roommate as well. She was getting too personal. However, we learn from these mishaps in life and hopefully learn from it. Fast forward as you mentioned the reason why you are who you are as of today, and WE ALL LOVEEEEEE AND ADMIRE YOU FOR IT ❤❤❤❤ Blessings 🙏🏽

Brother you are talking about my current landlord🤣🤣 I’m currently renting a bedroom in a women’s house with no access to the kitchen for $900 and boy is this lady a control freak. No visitors without her approval, heat/air in my bedroom has to be set to what she wants, just to name a few of the requirements. Some of which I learned after moving in. Been here since October. Looking to move by this June. Nice place but can’t deal with being treated like a child.

There is nothing like your own space. I've let friends come stay for short periods of time and I felt like I was a guest/prisoner in my own place. People definitely don't clean up behind themselves like you like. They are not respectful of privacy either. #RoomatesAreANoForMe4Sure

I'm living with housemates and God am i tired of sticking papers on walls to tell them to tidy up, clean after themselves, be clean, clean the stove, stop leaving dirty dishes in the sink, clean the house when it's your turn, wash your a** coz your pits keep making the whole damn house smell, wash the tub immediately after bathing. I am so tired 😫. I am saving money so i can move to my own place alone.

i'm so sorry you got finessed! i'm from Brooklyn, and if there's one thing people in NYC gon always do is try you. She saw you as a humble, kind, chill young man, and decided to scam you. Plus you probably told her you were from Michigan, and atp, she was prolly like "got em!" Cuz a local woulda cussed her azz out as soon as she came back three days later, or worse yet, woulda changed the locks and made it so that SHE had to report in advance when she'd be coming back and forth. Being a really shy and ultra-respectful person myself (Caribbean/Asian/Af-American upbringing), i had to learn so many hard lessons growing up in some rough azz neighborhoods. Now that i'm much older and have lived in several cities across the world, i still LOVE Brooklyn forever, but between the prices and the filth, i can't really "live" in New York anymore. The vibes will forever be umatched though.

I'm from NY born and raised and I can attest to the high prices for minimum space, and the reason for that is because here in NYC you're not paying for space you're paying just to say that you live in NYC.

moved to Williamsburg 4 months ago and my apartment was taken from me before I can even move in. I lived everywhere the first 6 weeks. I’m in jersey city now and I can’t tell you how much I agree. the culture is so different; the people are different and not in a good way. sorry not sorry. I miss having my own place. Being a clean person living with people that not only don’t know how to communicate, act weird but also don’t know how to clean, is so brutal **sigh** the plan is to be living in Brooklyn on my own next year and can not wait.

Reminded of my own experience when I first moved to Madrid. I'm French so I had to rent something while being in another coutry. When I got there I realised the landlady was a live in landlady... I thought it would be fine and that it wouldn't change much from a flatmate. But she would say things and never do it, she said she would move to Málaga (south of Spain like 6h away) for work but never did, she said she would call the plumber to sort problems in the bathroom that I shared with a flatmate. She would push us to get vitamins cause she said we lost our hair too much and that it was everywhere. But she'd actually look for fallen hair on the kitchen floor lol she'd come in and bend over to inspect the tiles smh One day I had to come back to the flat 10min after leaving because I'd realised I'd forgotten something and I found her in our bathroom which she wasn't supposed to go in, but she was checking for hair in the shower drain I guess One time I came back from France after Christmas and she told me she'd swept my room cause there was too much hair?? I mean fair enough I'm a girl, I have hair, I lose it. If the floor is covered in hair in space we share, fair enough that's bad and I have to clean it. But why would she care if the room I rent is covered in hair? Plus I know damn well it wasn't the case cause I'm quite clean and organised Anyways, I hated her, I'd spend my time trying not to run into her in the flat She ended up giving me a month's notice after 8 months cause she wanted to rent out the flat before summer began whereas I would have left the flat during summer and it would have been harder to find people to rent to

A lot of people are simply trifling and have every excuse for living nasty. I keep a shoe rack at the door and people don't like visiting simply because they're used to walking around their house with the same shoes they walked around in outside. That is so yucky. You step in feces and everything else and then walk sround the house 🤮. I kearned years ago to clean as I go. When people use having kids as an excuse to live in filth, I let them know thats even more of a reason to clean as you go, teach kids to clean as they go, and don't let stuff just pile up. I bump heads with my husband about his lackluster so called cleaning. I can't stand no half clean toilet, hair on floors and counters, dishes sitting in sinks to collect mold 🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮

She packed up and moved out.while I was at work with no warning. I should have sent her a thank you note. Her moving out was the BEST thing that ever happened because she made my life so misersble. I would cry every day. Same thing. Didn't want my boyfriend over. I do smile every time you say "she was an older woman" I never thought of myself as a 'older woman' until now😂

What a different sight to see. In this particular day and age it is so easy to get caught up in, " Keeping up with the Jones", but to be set apart from others is something truly unique. I know that everyone has a calling from the Lord and may He continue to rein upon your life and give you everything that your heart desires. This was a reminder to me as a God fearing woman to not lean onto my own understanding. As humans we always feel like we have all the answers and the truth is; we don't. Keep doing what you're doing. Remember when prayer's go up, blessings come down. 🙏🏽🙌🏽❤❤❤
