I return to Lightsaber Combat with this video about the ancient style of dual-blade fencing, the style that served as the basis for Niman.

Jar'kai is my favorite style of fighting. After about 2/3 years of training in actual dual blade combat, I started studying Jar'kai about a year to a year and a half ago. I love it!

I think Jar'Kai can be applied to any of the seven forms but only after one has achieved a high level of skill in that particular style. Kit Fisto: Form I Asajj Ventress: Form II Obi-Wan Kenobi: Form III Ahsoka Tano: Form IV Darth Malgus: Form V Darth Krayt: Form VI Darth Sidious: Form VII this is just an example of who I think are capable Jar'Kai duellists

When Obi-wan uses dual blades he actually seems to go back to his Ataru training. If you watch his skirmish against Maul and Oppress he is constantly jumping around at high speeds, not setting up a defense, as Maul and Oppress combined could break Kenobi's defense quickly. For Soresu the only good example I can think of is actually General Grievous. His spinning of his blades can create a powerful defense to push his enemies back, in both the old and new Clone Wars cartoons. Palpatine uses a combination of all forms, so for Ju-Yo I would say Maul.

I think there should be 10 forms of Lightsaber Combat. I feel Shien, Djem So, Jar'kai and Vapaad are so distinctly different from their parent forms, they should be forms in their own right rather than extensions of Forms V, VI and VII respectively

Really wen you count all the Sith variants of the different forms you end up with a lot more. So you would have a total 14-16 I think? Not sure about the Sith Side, I just know they have there own unique variants.

so mixing jar'kai with ataru fixes the problems a lot of the problems except for the energy draining. since ataru lacks alot of defence the extra lightsaber helps provide more, and ataru is bad for fighting multiple people and jarkai also makes up for that. of course theres stll problems but i love these two together

Using things like a "cross block" while looking cool, defeats the advantage of using two blades because now you are letting the opponents single blade, hold up BOTH of yours, defeating the purpose of you carrying two (while you have the disadvantage of maneuverability, because a single blade with two hands will always be more maneuverable). It's the same thing with a "dual attack" when you have both blades close together when striking. This allows again, a single blade to stop BOTH. You want to use one blade to parry/evade, or both blades to attack different areas so they both can't be blocked. The strength of any technique is knowing it's weakness and avoiding it. Carrying your weakness into battle is a sure way to get yourself killed. Btw, I think Jar Kai is the best form (or one of them). I'm not hating on the form, I just think it needs to be practical.
@LoftOfTheUniverse9 жыл бұрын
I will also add, what people call "POWER" attacks or "strength" is inaccurate. It is always and I repeat, always better to use finesse than to be a brute. I've taken some fencing and I can tell you the guys who put a ton of force (no pun intended) into their attacks were prone to 1. missing 2. getting parried. 3. slow to recover and all three of those are punishable with a reposte (basically a counter attack). You need speed/quick movements. Hard moves aren't practical and advanced users do not need such. Anakin won against Ventress because 1. He's simply a stronger character overall in force etc. 2. She was laying on her back nowhere to go 3. she actually didn't get hit she fell because the foundation beneath her broke out. So the "brute strength" argument isn't viable because one could simply 1. Dodge 2. guide the blade to miss (you don't always have to completely stop an attack, it takes less effort to redirect their energy else where. Check out wing chun. This principle always works. It's always better to redirect because you can control where their blade is. PLUS if you have two blades, one of theirs is caught up and your other can strike! Yikes guys!

My preferred stance in Jar'Kai lightsaber combat is my own variation of the Dual Makashi stance mentioned in the video; except that you start in the traditional one and raise your arms into the same angle that Sidious has them in during the start of his duel against Maul and Savage in the Clone Wars' season V.

Jensaarai1, I have a question about two Jedi in particular: What would you say is the primary fighting style of Darth Revan and Exar Kun? I especially want to know about Exar Kun in your opinion, because a lot of top lightsaber duelist lists I've seen always place him very high, if not number 1.

Exar Kun was one of if not the quintessential master of form VI, albeit a ridiculously offensive variation
@fightingfalcon77711 жыл бұрын
Don't know about Vader and Dooku, but he was brutal with Maul. one part of his training was Sidious abandoning him on an island with assassin droids programmed to kill him, only to have Sidious appear, claim he failed and had a new apprentice, causing Maul to attack him and wanting to murder him. When he lost, Sidioushad been testing Maul, there was no other apprentice, and Maul passed the test by WANTING to kill Sidious, showing his dedication to the Sith and the Grand Plan

A thought just occurred to me while watching a collaboration versus video presented by jensaarai1 and Antoine Bandele (Obi-Wan Kenobi vs Darth Malgus). What if, when using Jar'Kai, you use one blade purely for defensive Soresu and the other for purely offensive Ataru?
@That0therG8 жыл бұрын
+Darth “Niman” Arkeskou how would that work? Ataru is a form based on movement, where soresu is based on stonewalling...you can't move AND be always on the move at the same time...

+GraemexIrwinator haha I guess I didn't think about that
@That0therG8 жыл бұрын
if you mean the sword techniques, then I can understand where you're coming from on that front. but it still wouldn't work, cuz you have Soresu's tight, energy efficient beadwork (normally done with two hands) vs. ataru's flamboyant bladework (from what I see is normally one handed, but can be two). either way, unless you have more than one hand I really don't think it would work. Interesting idea tho
@ariesstorm95778 жыл бұрын
+GraemexIrwinator for some reason I might have been thinking of wing chun parrying and striking simultaneously (I've never practiced this art, only read about it). Alternatively, how about Djem So with dual blades? Could someone who focuses on physical strength like a body builder be effective at Djem So/Jar'Kai?
@That0therG8 жыл бұрын
I don't know dude, I practiced with a Bo (i.e I'd probably have a saber staff. though i have had experience wielding two swords (just like jar'kai) I always used my second blade sooley for defense. unless you have equal strength in both arms (ambidextrous) then using Djem So would be difficult, but not impossible. personally if I had to have two different styles I'd rather have Shii-Cho/Makashi and Soresu (but being a dancer may make me more akin to ataru movements)

@pablerarav90169 жыл бұрын
I would have to disagree with Niman. Or rather, Niman is a bit of a lazy option- it's neither good nor bad for anything. A lightsaber pike could potentially be used for most saber forms. As a saber-pike is not suited for confined spaces, I'd say Ataru is the best bet. All that leaping around would compliment the extended reach of a pike. One would certainly need to be skilled with the force to augment the fatiguing moves. I'd avoid Makashi- the pike lacks the ability for overly precise bladework. For defence it may be necessary to fall back on Soresu. And some knowledge of Juyo would help, since aggressive attacks compliment well with the acrobatic of Ataru. Side note- putting a metallic blade or spike at the bottom end of the pike would add some attacking force, without the added worry of a second lightsaber blade.
@kevinsanchez48089 жыл бұрын
I say that Ataru would be a good choice. But if you've ever seen Avatar The Last Airbender, then you get an idea on how to use it: like avatar Aang. Spinning around, lots of jumps and flips.

I don't know. I don't know much about his training of Dooku and Vader, given that they already had some training with the Force. But with Maul, he raised him from birth basically as a killing machine. At one point in his training, he abandoned Maul on an island with assassin droids programmed to kill him, then Sidious appeared to him, said he failed and had a new apprentice, making Maul attack and want to kill him, only to reveal there was no other apprentice and that the test was to make Maul

@anthonychoi242110 жыл бұрын
He sure is very correct when he says that Jar'kai users often rely too much on their weapons and forget the force, like when Ventress dueled Count Dooku. He totally beat her up with sith lighting. But using Jar'kai makes you vulnerable to being very sloppy, swinging your blades around wildly. Just like master Luminara said to Ventress, "You fighting style is sloppy... undefined," although she could recognize Dooku's fighting style. Oh and a twin strike is useless against creatures like Yoda, as demonstrated in Episode 1 of star wars the clone wars.

I think of as Jarkai is Makashii with two sabers. The key is to overwhelm/out-manuveur your opponent with a constant barage of attacks. So in my opinion, if you are using jarkai against a saber wielding opponent you should seldom if ever have to defend.

If I were a Jedi/Sith, I would practice Jar'Kai with an emphasis on Makashi, Ataru and Shien with the intent to outmanoeuvre opponents and finish them quickly with precise attacks from unpredictable angles. I don't particularly see defence as an issue despite the apparent weakness to power attacks because I would rather deflect and/or evade them than meet them head on. This strategy will serve me well both in a 1-vs-1 duel and against multiple opponents.

My own response to a form like this is usually: "If you can't handle 1 saber, why use 2?"
@zyggybaranowski68522 жыл бұрын
The best reason for that is simple:. Psychological warfare. More blades often intimidate opponents, and create the illusion that you are 2 times as skilled. Win the fight before it's fought, scare your opponent into making a mistake they otherwise would not make. A risky strategy, but potentially worth it against unseasoned opponents.

Another thing is they really cant attack from the inside that much generally outside more you have two hands each with a blade while with one blade both hands would mean their saber is inside the body better protecting your body those with two blades cant they can do the cross angles and if enough room can do the whirlwind to protect from that but that means they have to keep combat with them on the offensive has to be Fast to get the whirlwind going Momentum and precison are the Bigest factors!

How can Jar'Kai have a weakness regarding precision when Makashi's primary benefit is precision and it generally employs a one-handed grip?
@elyxr478510 жыл бұрын
Even though makashi practitioners do often use only one hand makashi is still more precise due to the fact that they can focus all their energy into one blade. Plus the footwork is better and it relies heavily on counter striking, being able to find openings in an oponents guard, and quickly defeating them with the least amount of effort. Jar kai practitionors also tend to become too dependent on having two lightsabers. As such, if they lose one their offensive and defensive ablilities are greatly restricted.

Note: I don't see why why you would need much brute strength with a weapon that can cut through almost anything. That's why I would prefer Jar'Kai fencing, so that you can get an almost guaranteed hit, And for lightsabers, a hit either is majorly crippling or means death. Note:Now that I think about it...Grievous vs Darth Traya and/or Pong Krell...Watch the sabers FLY! Note after watching example: Wow, a Jar'Kai master can rotate their entire torso at incredible speeds essentially turning them into a lightsaber Buzzsaw (an idea I have entertained myself with telekinetically controlling a saber staff) But now that you think about it...it's kind of disturbing.

Mixing lightsaber styles was fairly common among the Jedi, and they are referred to as hybrid styles. They tend to be frowned upon by purists, and often lose effectiveness. There's a reason that most Jedi focused on the seven classical forms, and that's because (apart from Juyo) they were complete and didn't require the time and patience to devise your own system. A lot of the tactics and moves are incompatible with each other. That being said, Vader did it very effectively.

Maybe it's my lack of knowledge on how the force works, but why couldn't a force user direct all their force enhanced strength from both arms into one arm? Especially if they can "anchor" their feet to the ground to give them leverage to offset their lack of weight if they are lighter then their opponent? Since it's a flowing energy, I could imagine a jedi drawing the energy from one arm and into the striking arm. Strength training would seem almost useless against a super strong opponent.

you said that it was imprecise. This is untrue as at high levels it is just as pecise as other froms , although maybe not makashi. Lord Kas'im uses it against darth bane and completely outclasses him as his saber skills were so perfect.
