The Rise of Skywalker's awful fight choreography

Who the hell thought this was a good idea?
What is even going on in this fight scene?
Note: I've been made aware of a mistake I did.
I pointed out how Rey already knows when an enemy is going to shoot her before they do so.
Jedis can do predict moves before they are executed so it's not a choreography error lol

Remember, if you like this movie and/or this fight scene, that's great! This is just my take on it on an attempt to have fun with a negative movie experience I'll be glad to respond to each comment if I have anything to say about it, and I'll do my best to keep it civil! @@tarzantabi7845 yep, when I was a dumb child I thought they were good and didnt understand the general dislike for them. But then as a matured I couldn't get through them and realised why. They were soulless garbage designed to sell toys to dumb kids. Bad acting, bad direction, bad/no chemistry, told things are a way not shown, fight scenes designed to look good but immensely shallow, pointless characters that if removed change nothing of the journey or the outcome, etc. Now in reference to this video it goes on about how characters just stand about waiting for their time to hit. That is what's gonna happen in any 1 vs many fight scene in every single movie. Thats not poor choreography. That just the nature of the beast. An easy example of this is your precious prequels. Obi and qui gon both take turns at swinging at maul. A lot of the time hiding it with a pointless spin to make it less obvious but it's still a fighter standing around waiting for their turn to hit. But there are also moments that they aren spinning and just waiting for maul to finish his engagement with the other character to do his thing. The double lightsaber doesn't help maul keep one at bay either so don't try that one. Whichever way he needs to move 1 blade to block other blades movement is easy predictable, even without the force. Lol. Characters moving their weapons where combatants use to be not where they are, attacking the weapon not the person, these and many more the star wars prequel fights are rife with. And when you slow them down like these guys do to criticised the sequels you see it clear as day too.

Yeah the deflections are fine, Jedi can sense danger and react to things before they even happen, but the choreography is so poor. If you see how they choreographed fights in the prequels they spent days working out a single fight scene doing it over and over and over until it was perfect.

Loving the comments trying to call out "nitpicking". Holding your blade behind your back and waiting for them to strike it, then taking a short pause afterwards just so you can express satisfaction is how you *annihilate* tension from a scene. Its how you tell your audience that nothing bad can happen to this character. It's unbelievably cringe.

Well I mean powerful force users are basically godlike, so it at least makes sense in lore that nothing is really that big a threat to them. Also weird the first criticism is the Jedi saw the blast coming before seeing it with physical perception. Um...she uses the force....like...wtf? They literally can see the future... The problem is with all the NPC's. They, like all movies, take turns on the good guys. This has always been the case and almost always happens. It's why they dont show you a wider shot.

What’s the point of a climax fight if the viewer just sits back and knows no stakes are at risk? In phantom menace, we didn’t know what would happen with maul and Qui Gon. There was immense tension, no comic relief anywhere If we didn’t know the originals, there would be even more tension during the obi wan vs a Anakin fight. Finally, you know in 99% of cinema everyone knows the MC isnt going to lose the fight or suffer at all. @pigstuck The thing with the Corridor fight is that it was lightsaber duel, not really a Jedi duel. The force isn't really accounted for, they just aimed to make realistic lightsabers. In an advanced force user fight there would be the flashiness that comes with being a space wizard (thing the original trilogy lacks), but the choreography should be really tight and calculated to show the characters are incredibly skilled and not just blindly swinging in front of their faces (thing a lot of fights in the prequels lack). That sadly leaves the only realistic force user fights to animated series happening on the sidelines instead of the main movies. Something that seems likely to remain unchanged as the current team working on the sequels can't even be bothered to plan and execute a decent choreography.

I have to disagree. Adam added to this trilogies shit level. Couldn't take him seriously. His character was a full Vader rip-off. Why everyone loves this guy is beyond me when I'm seeing tons of things wrong with that character.

I'd say the main reason these fights look so bad is because the actors don't want to *actually* hit each other with their prop weapons, but also because of reshoots where they pick and choose the best takes out of several. Still, it never hurts to make them more believable, even if the moves are risky. In Lord of the Rings, Viggo (Aragorn) actually deflects a real knife with his sword, and he even breaks his toe when kicking a helmet when his characterthinks the Hobbits are dead, and keeps on acting through the pain.

The literal only way to make this whole thing cannon, and still make it not ruin the whole franchise, is to make it so Rey is telling this as an old lady to Ben Solo's children, while they look at her and say "But how come Dad is here right now?" and then the camera pans to Kylo and he says "I think it's time for bed." and Rey just smiles to Kylo as she lifts his child up and gives it back to him. An old lady telling a bedtime story. Then you can make the real sequel trilogy.

The most annoying thing here is that Rey's movements are actually pretty believable. She could've done a few more takes, but given what's established it honestly feels alright. It's the fact that the guards, which there are only six of, take turns, the director seemingly phoned it in, one of them just shoots his friend with no real prompting, none of them advance, or step back, or dodge, or aim, or whatever. It's compounding the issues that most of the sequel fights had, all at once and to their greatest extreme. Not enough takes, awful director, less than zero direction for vfx guys, it hurts, especially knowing how excited the actors were for it and how much Ridley and Driver actually practiced for the first movie and how little of their effort paid off.

I blame most of episode 9’s issues on Rian Johnson. In episode 7 it was very much implied/guaranteed that Snoke was gonna be the big bad (he even had the Palpatine hologram of his head like come on) of the trilogy. Rey was theorised to be a Palpatine on day 1 of the movie and that may or may not have been JJ’s plan from the beginning. Phasma might have been planned to last until Episode 9 (or could have really always just been just Boba Fett 2 who dies in the sequel). Then came Rian Johnson, that dickhead, and went and ruined absolutely everything that JJ was and may have been planning, out of seemingly pure spite and/or ego and/or stupidity: - He killed Snoke - He killed _and_ ruined Luke - He ruined any potential build-up for Rey’s origin - He wrote the 2 absolute worst characters in fiction - He ruined Hux - He killed Phasma and Finn’s character arc (maybe Phasma was always supposed to die in 8, but I’m gonna put it on the list of Rian’s crimes anyway because he deserves no benefit of the doubt) With all of that, Rian left JJ with barely anything to work with, like when your little brother obliterates your biggest and most expensive LEGO set and then comes to you, hands the desecrated corpse of your LEGO over and says “please fix it”. Rian Johnson, with is incredibly awful decisions for Episode 8, forced JJ Abrams’ hand to make most of Episode 9 the way it is. Now whether or not Episode 9 would have been better with Snoke and most of the other characters (Luke in particular) alive is unknown sadly. But I think we should cut JJ Abrams some slack because Rian Johnson ruined the whole thing out of spite because he could only direct 1 movie. JJ Abrams still made some bafflingly awful decisions though don’t get me wrong, like killing Ben, which robbed him of his punishment and fully fledged redemption arc

I think in theory it could work here as a sort of flex. Ben is a Force user, which means he can sense when things are going to happen before they actually do. This is the entire reason behind Jedi and Sith having the universal ability to deflect blaster fire with a lightsaber accurately and repeatedly. It wouldn’t be too hard for one to decide “heh, this loser’s gonna swing right here, so I’ll style on him” and strike that pose a split second before the weapon hits just because they can. However it clearly wasn’t choreographed that way and as a result it looks goofy as hell.

Every moment in the Original and Prequel had a precise technique for both story and behind the scenes. Darth Maul controlled the battle when he Qui-Gon and Obi-Won. He moved the battle from an open area in the hanger to narrow walkways in the reactor room, making it easier to defend against a 2 on 1 assault. He controlled the fight by dividing and conquering them one at a time. Palpatine trying to flee from Yoda in Episode 3 would have limited Yoda's acrobatic attacks if he managed to get Yoda into that narrow hallway. Obi-Won learned from Darth Maul to control the battle to get Anakin to follow him in narrow pathways which made his Serisu style of defense more easy. Darth Vader could have killed Luke at anytime in Cloud City. But he got Luke to follow him until he got Luke in a position where he was trapped. I think Luke in Episode 6 was trying to lure Vader with a false opening when he had the high ground on that walkway. I think his strategy was to cut down Vader the same way Obi-Won cut him down on Mustafar, he just didn't count on Darth Vader learning from his mistake from last time and throwing his lightsaber instead. Every move was calculated with precision by both the characters and the story written. The Sequels are just trying to look awesome without purpose.

The Knights of Ren shouldn't even have been a thing, since they didn't use them for anything relevant anyway. Suddenly giving them lines at the climax of the 3rd movie would have been as weird as them not having any lines at all, because we didn't know anything about them. And at that point it would have been to late to get to know them. We had no reason to care what happened to them, they were just intimidating extras. We didn't even get a facial expression. Across 3 movies. And these are supposed to be like family to the main antagonist of the trilogy. What a joke. I envy you yet I'm honestly happy you enjoyed it. My expectations could be located approximately a mile below the Mariana Trench but still I left the theater wanting to swallow a live grenade. God bless you.

I have a little the opposite. I came in with the worst expectations, but came out incredibly disappointed and angry. They not only ruined the potential, but also destroyed what they had achieved before.

this has to be some of Disney's laziest work. they thought they could give us any star wars movie and everyone would just automatically love it because Sidious is back, the new main character is way too OP, and they touched it up with slightly comedic edge lord.

@@TraceguyRune Um no. Disney made real star wars laser rifles to give it a more realistic effect, they did the same for lightsabers during the last jedi where they made Kylo Ren's lightsaber real but a stunt double accidently cut his hand off so lightsabers stayed cgi but blasters and their shots are real.

It felt like they were trying to portray Ray as, “She threw a grenade and killed 10 people…and then the grenade blew up”. And your “???” reaction to Kylo blocking with the lightsaber at his back really knocked the wind out of me! Indeed, it was so jarring that we have no words for it! 😂

I agree tbh if they should have just made it where rey and Kylo are so fing fast that the guards can’t keep up
