In this episode the Nerd takes a look at Desert Bus and Castlevania II: Simon's Quest Redaction! Desert Bus was a mini game that was included on Penn & Teller's Smoke and Mirrors (and unreleased game planned for the Sega CD). It was developed by Imagineering and published by Absolute Entertainment. Absolute went out of business so the game was never released but the Nerd was able to obtain a copy to torture himself with! In Desert Bus, you drive a bus from Arizona to Las Vegas in real time. It's considered one of the worst games ever made, making it ripe for a review by the Nerd!
Then the Nerd takes a look at Castlevania II: Simon's Quest Redacted - a hack that improves upon the flaws in the original NES game.

Speed strats: - Pressing left in the correct 2 frame window increases the bus's speed to 46 mph for 0.3 seconds. - Double tapping the accelerator while pressing right in the correct 1 frame window will despawn the next rock on the side of the road which prevents lag. What makes Big Rigs superior to Desert Bus is the fact that it's just so enjoyably ridiculous. There are so many glitches that you can take advantage of to give you an hour or less of enjoyment. Desert Bus is an existential nightmare that punishes you for trying to crack the system. Penn and Teller didn't create a game. They created a form of torture.

Oh man, once me and a couple of friends took hour long shifts and beat this game. It took all night. Just so you know, the bus stop sign is only at the very beginning. Never appears again. Not once. And the bug that hits the window? Also happens once, about five hours in. It nearly caused us to crash it was so exciting/scary. What a game.

By expanding this game with modern tec and adding layers to what goes on, this could be realistic for the better. THIS COULD EVEN BECOME A TEST FOR TRUCK DRIVERS TO GET A LICENCE TO HALL BIG LOADS ALL DAY! And maybe they can let you stop at exits and take bathroom brakes and get a bite to eat. We don't need to make this game less realistic, WE NEED TO MAKE IT MORE REALISTIC! Let head sets and mics allow gamers to interact with each other and reward people for doing the driving by letting them expand the number of people they can take on a ride and add onto the radio stations they can listen to. Desert Bus could be pretty awesome, if it just became more realistic.

Thing is though, this game was made with the intent to be bad from the start. It's not really like it was a game that was made on the cheap and no one cared. Toasty Tofu It was made in response to moral guardians complaining that games were too violent and not realistic enough. Desert Bus is giving them what they wanted; a non-violent, realistic scenario. I mean, what could be more realistic than someone who has a job that requires them to keep constant attention focused on one thing such as driving at a continuous slow pace and when you mess you you are required to wait for the proper help to come and tow you back to whatever distance you previously came from. This is why I find the game hilarious in that it gives people what they claim they wanted and shows how badly it can go. It also showed how disconnected most of the critics were when they acted as if ALL video games had this problem as there as not a lack of non-violent games available when this game was made as several of our most loved video game series are NOT just about blood or whatever people claim is ruining the world. If anything, this game sort of foreshadowed the complaints that are still going on TODAY as critics still like to paint games with the broadest strokes they can without looking around to see there is more than what they think exist in games and they care more than capable of finding something that will entertain them.
