We had a wonderful trip to Central Australia recently and I was lucky to bring back some of beautiful, very fine red desert sand. What to do with it? Make soap, of course! I used a hanger swirl technique to make this pattern in the soap. I hope you enjoy the video :)

Interesting orchid-like pattern in the final result. I have some of that red sand sitting in a jar. Was in central Oz for a week away back in '79. A lot quieter back then, just big road trains, a few tourist buses, plenty of willy-willies and drinks at the Telford Alice. Scaled the rock just before sunrise and watched the shadow of the rock contract back from the horizon as the sun came up. The Olgas were quite a sight as the light hit them. Eerie place when you go there. Unfortunately it was very dry so did not get to see the changing colours of rain on the rock of which John Williamson sings. King's Canyon was quite a surprise, right there in the middle of all that desert, a sudden, cool oasis in the blistering heat. Some small bats clinging to the walls. Think I drank a dozen cans of Solo that day which I bought at a one-dunny, one-tank (and, of course, one pub/hotel/motel) town on the way. Funny how it was too hot and dry for flies, there were hardly any at all. Nothing to eat, except dead tourists that have fallen off the rock, I guess. Bus driver told us that if you lined up the headstones of those who have died, falling off, around the base of the rock then they would go more than half way around and that's about half way of 6 miles if memory serves. Nice soap.

I see you put little superfat 2% in your recipes and 42% lye concentratiton, is it related somehow? thanks for sharing your knowledges, you are great explaining so clear and detailed.
@EllysEverydaySoapMaking
@EllysEverydaySoapMaking 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you, no, the lye concentration has nothing to do with the superfat, or how much lye is in the recipe. The term 'lye concentration' refers only to the lye solution and how much water is in it. More water in the solution, lower lye concentration. Less water, higher lye concentration :)

Elly, would it have been better if you mix the charcoal powder in a bit of oil, instead of water? because water would not mix with your oils, right?
@EllysEverydaySoapMaking
@EllysEverydaySoapMaking 4 жыл бұрын
That's a very good question! Both oils and water mix well with soap batter, because at that stage it's a soap emulsification and they will both mix in just fine. I prefer to use water where I can, because every bit of extra oil added adds to your superfat, which I prefer to keep low. Soaps spoil too fast if you have too much excess oil in them :)

Hi Elly, I keep reading/hearing that citrus EOs don’t survive saponification, that there isn’t barely any scent that survives but then I keep seeing people use citrus EOs. What is your opinion on this? Thanks in advance! I think I’m going to try this technique tomorrow 😍 It’s so beautiful.
@EllysEverydaySoapMaking
@EllysEverydaySoapMaking Жыл бұрын
Hi Ellie, you are right most citrus EO's don't survive too long. It's not the saponification that does it, they are just fleeting scents and evaporate quickly. I use what's called 'folded' citrus oils, and other oils that have citrussy scents but are not made form citrus fruit itself. Things like lemongrass, lemon balm, lemon myrtle etc. Tenfold orange I use quite a lot, but it's super concentrated and therefore lasts quite well. It's what you pair them with too - a nice earthy base note helps.

@@EllysEverydaySoapMaking thank you for that correction. That makes sense. I made a soap last night with bergamot, tangerine and orange then put it in my oven, most of the scent is gone now. The heat was too high (my oven from 1986, the dial doesn’t match the temp *shocker* I should have checked that before hand 🤪) and it melted my pretty swirls and beautiful soap top I had constructed, too. Lesson learned, though! I just ordered a nice large cooler that I’ll use, taking another note from you. 😊 Thank you for all the teaching! I’m learning a lot, and quickly, too. 💜

Love the way you make your video...very simple and looks easy to do, I think you're an expert cause that's how an expert does, make things look easy, some other video on the soap making that I saw makes me feel intimidated ...I just wonder how the sand would feel on the skin when it includes in the soap? Thanks for sharing.

Thank you for the videos and explanations I really enjoy every video. I am very very very new in making soap. I didn't even start using my first batch yet and I am waiting patiently. I struggle with soda ash but what is weird is that I do not get soda ash the next day, when cut the soap or unmould, but much later in about 1 week or so when is loosing weight and evaporates water and it is not only on the surface but it is on the sides as well. Any advice? That would be so helpful.. Kind regards and God bless you
@EllysEverydaySoapMaking
@EllysEverydaySoapMaking 3 жыл бұрын
Hi, that's strange, usually the soda ash is apparent quite quickly. Perhaps try using less water in your recipes? That usually helps with the problem.

Did you rinse the sand before using in your soap? What a beautiful color! I hope I get to visit Australia one day. Aside from all of the venomous creatures I'm terrified of, it looks like a BEAUTIFUL country and one I've dream of visiting since I was a little girl. It was literally the first place I ever wanted to travel to.

nice looks lovely. I have a Quiestion, you mentioned mixing color to water or charcoal to water before hand. if we do that, do we have to use lesser water with Lye mix, I have seen people do it with titinum dioxde as well, does it effect the recipes if too much water
@EllysEverydaySoapMaking

No, it's ok, just use a little bit of water to mix the colours - it won't make too much of a difference.

Such beautiful sand, Elly! I just want to plunge my hand into it through your photograph! 😊 Energetically it has an incredible vibration. Cedarwood is an excellent choice to compliment it ((_~ I prefer the flatter soap tops too as I think the raised tops anchor water ...not good for the soap’s longevity.

Elly, I just found your channel...what luck! Your soap turned out gorgeous. I live near a beach that has super fine white sand which I would love to use for soap. How did you clean it prior to soaping? Is climbing Ayers Rock still allowed?
@EllysEverydaySoapMaking
@EllysEverydaySoapMaking 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Debbie, there's no need to clean your sand, just put it in as it is, it will be just fine. And no, there's no more climbing of Uluru/Ayers Rock, which is a great thing for the local people and visitors in my opinion. It's a sight to behold and a great privelege to visit. We don't need to be climbing all over it.
