Elly's Everyday Soap Making

Күн бұрын

Among my friends and family, this soap is famous! Everybody loves it. It’s my ‘soleseife’ or ‘brine soap’, made with fresh salt water from the sea, coloured with uplifting, oceanic colours and scented with a beautiful essential oil blend.
I collect the seawater to make this soap from North Stradbroke Island, just off the coast of Brisbane, Australia. North Stradbroke Island is part of Quandamooka country, and its traditional name is Minjerribah. I respectfully acknowledge the Quandamooka people and their elders, past, present and emerging. This beautiful country is my favourite place in the world, and I’ve been visiting the Island since I was a child.
Recipe details
Olive oil, 850g
Coconut oil, melted, 100g
Castor oil, 50g
Fresh salt water from the sea, 225g
Sodium hydroxide/caustic soda, 138g
(1000g oil batch, 3% superfat and 38% lye concentration) - if you’d like to learn more about calculating your own soap recipes or what these terms mean, please check out my video on that subject here • How to Formulate and C...
For the colours you will need titanium dioxide, blue and green micas (or whatever alternatives you prefer).
For the essential oil blend, I used (and it is divine!):
Bergamot, 24g
Patchouli, 8g
Peppermint, 8g
The essential oils in this soap recipe are calculated at 4% of the total soap recipe oil amount - 40g total.
Mould size
My mould used in this video is 37cm long, 7cm wide and 5.7cm deep.
In inches that is 14.5" long, 2 and 3/4" wide and 2 + 1/4" deep.
It holds 1.480kg of soap batter - just enough for this recipe.

Hello! I made cold process soap today with salt brine instead of distilled water, but used olive oil only. It took 36 hours to demold, it is not solid hard but it is very firm. I used liquids at a Lye ratio of 1.7:1 as per Zany's recipe. Now I just wait for the curing time.

All the way out to Straddie for some water! Dedication indeed, but I think I'll wait for a clean tide at main beach and dunk a plastic jerry can in :) Hmmm... reckon there's some marketing to be done with bluebottle-season soleseife? Anyway, thanks for your consistently informative videos!

@@EllysEverydaySoapMaking Actually, that was the video that I found your channel with! I got into this with the idea of eventually selling a replacement to the older tallow style solvol (not the newer ones, they were intentionally poorly formulated to get people to accept the impending goo product) because I work in a field where solvol was THE name in hand soap, and now we're all using another brand of goo and hating it. I did forget that the pumice you collected was part of a scheduled trip, though :P

Thanks Elly, love watching your soaping videos - just out of interest can you put the soap mold into the oven to reach the gel stage?
@EllysEverydaySoapMaking
@EllysEverydaySoapMaking 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you. Yes, you can, but only on very low heat or just with the light on. Just enough to keep it from getting cool. You can create wrinkles in the top of the soap if it gets too hot using the oven.

Thanks for a beautiful video. I like the idea of using sea water and do have some close that I would like to try. Two questions: - How do I know my sea water is pure enough? Just by the looks of it? It's not brown or murky so nothing obvious. - What qualities or benefits do you see in the resulting soap? Thank you, Elly.

Hi Arlyne, thank you, glad you liked the video. I think if your sea water looks clear and fresh, then it's good. You can always filter it if you're not sure. The finished soap is harder than usual, due to the salt content, that's the main difference.

Hi Elly. Thank you so much for this beautiful demonstration. I'm confused about why the batter is not mixed to trace, as it seems in all of your other videos it is. I understand it may be because it sets up fast, but I thought they all had to come to trace first and that's actually a rule....

Hi Darlene, I brought this to an emulsion, which is the stage just before the soap starts obviously tracing. A good emulsion is all you need! This is a great one to talk through in my audio actually - thanks for asking!

I watched this just after finishing a lard and caster oil based soap which had me alternately stirring and stick blending constantly for 45 minutes till it came to trace. Here I see you stirring and stick blending for only a few minutes. How does that thicken so quickly and easily? Thank you.

I've never had a batch of soap that didn't trace within a few minutes. Are you using too much water in your recipes? Stick blender not effective? Hope you can figure it out! :)

@@EllysEverydaySoapMaking Thank you for your response. I am probably being too cautious, not wanting to burn out my stick blender motor, so as soon as I feel it getting warm I go back to stirring. Now that I know that I should expect it to trace much sooner I will be a bit bolder and first go with one of your recipes for a better experience.

I really enjoy watching your soap making videos! I was wondering why you don't take the temperature of the lye water and the oils? All other tutorials seem to make that very important.
@EllysEverydaySoapMaking
@EllysEverydaySoapMaking 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Doug, I don't think it's as essential as other soap makers say it is. For simple, mostly liquid/soft oil soaps like mine, a room temperature process or 'heat transfer' process work just fine (room temp oils and hot lye). Temperature only becomes more important when your recipe contains hard oils, butters and waxes, but even then I don't take the temps. I'm quite happy with my results just estimating the temperatures :)
