Awesome session! Much to learn from it. Mr. Dasgupta mildly admonishes the lady who asks a question as to why we are taught Oedipus and not Indian classic texts. While I agree with Mr. Dasgupta in that we should not close down the borders of knowledge. Let knowledge flow from all sides and let us enrich ourselves thus, but, I don't see why we cannot use our own literature as the primary source to study. We could always enrich ourselves by studying all the great poets, writers and philosophers from all other traditions. So far, since independence, we have willfully excluded the study of our own great texts. I am assuming that was the thrust of the lady's question. Also, loved Prof. Paranjpe's concluding remarks. All in all, time well spent!!

@@nilendusen Same question can be asked to you , who has stopped you from reading western lit. why not build the foundation of Indian Lit in Indian consciousness in classroom itself, than debate about Idea of india in lit fest after 70 yrs of independence. can't see the wood for the trees ??????????????? Also when country even has failed to provide education for all ... and don't forget we feed children at school forget about buying books and reading in HYPOTHETICAL free time. Swapan Dasgupta if you can understand Yoga you will not talk nonsense researching yoga is not writing books in english or lectures in foreign language. It was yog living and aspiring for union with almighty. also you should know how third generation of Iyengars and Pattabhi Jois and Krishnamacharya are talking it forward. It is art to be practised and science to effect body not verbal diarrhea in preserved in books.

Swapan Da it is important to know first who you are, as Bibek Da says, before you venture to know others. So define your self first in terms of your identity knowing your literature, heritage, cultural, social, political, economic and in terms of your being born on this land your Dharma so that you can understand others in contextually well. It should be not that you read Keats and then say what else, rather it should be read Kalidas and say what else.

It's been a great experience listening to this panel discussion even after such a long time. It's great to pit Darshana against Philosophy and Professor Paranjape rightly pointed out the futility to critique the panelists' use of English as the medium of discussion. For was not Aurobindo a classical scholar? It reminded me that Vivekananda thought some of his Western disciples very much able to take Vedantic lessons. Can we afford to forget the contributions of Sister Nibedita? The Western/Eastern dichotomy is a colonial construct. Vivekananda rightly enough thought that Western Philosophy is but a shadow of the Eastern. Recently, Pierre Hadot, a French philosopher, showed that Ancient Greek and Pagan philosophers did not understand by the idea of philosophy intellectual discourse, but spiritual exercise. They also had had the Gurukulas. The triumph of Hinduism will lie in teaching the world about this spiritual quest for truth which is what philosophy is all about. Ekam Sat Vipra Vahudha Vadanti. But Vivekananda had also entered a caveat well paid heed to by Gandhi. Make first your masses educated and happy. Otherwise there can be rebellions a la chinois! One is no more a Dharmika if even a single person goes without food. This is the ancient Idea of Lokakalyana which has been uniquely noticed to be there in the the recent research on the Indus Sarasvati culture, not to speak of the later Hindu- Buddhist cultures which centred round the ideas of Dharma and Lokehita.

Why do you want someone else to understand it ? I really dont understand that undercurrent of rage and anger in ppl like you. This session was for ppl who are interested in these things hence if you feel this is your area or domain of interest you can willingly pursue it to the ends of this earth. Why do you want others to follow you ? Nobody has gone "Western" they are just living a social experience which I feel is unoriginal in all its sense.... Even the "Western" traditions were mocked by western hippies at one point of time. Hence lets not stick to this eastern/ western perceptions. THEY ARE JUST COCOONS !

So frickinfly true and yet so many intellectuals.like Swapan do not see the need to do so, as clearly evident in his bias towards Western interpretations..He is the type that gives respectability and by implication a safe and sound career, to people like Wendy Doniger that write absolute trash about Ancient India just because they can..

The session's winner clearly is BIBEK DEB ROY. I knew him to be a very witty person for a long time but never had any clue of his Sanskrit and Sanskaar OR his deep but concise, piercing but soft rebuttal.of Swapan, using questions about the Self. The knowledge, experience and education of every other panelist, specifically Swapan, looked PUNY. SWAPAN was very very petty in trying to put down any question from.anyone criticising Western influence and it's bastardization of our public intellectualism. The last young lady who asked that question on Oedipus was not, by any measure, suggesting a "close mindedness". She was only trying to question why the authorities that be (read Lutyens Delhi Liberals) decided our textbooks to be as such and why is it we are not changing that?? By any stretch of imagination, that was a fair question. SWAPAN got carried away...

Problem with every intellectual whether left or right is that they obtain their bachelor's degree in india and salivate to get into some western universities, secure a place to live and earn there, holds an OCI card....comes to india, points out many many many problems in india and indians...preaches their propaganda whether left or right and again fly back to USA. And that's why we lack so much in innovation which india needs today....naki puranas and Vedas.

It is very difficult to listen to Swapan Dasgupta. I find him utterly confused, even though, he tries to use verbal jugglery to mask his confusion. His ignorance of glorious Indic civilization & profound traditional knowledge systems makes him praise it in passing with such incoherence that he is dying to get back to "ah, that does not mean we should reject Wendy Doniger, we should not reject great Western classical traditions" etc. But no one is talking about rejecting them. He tries his best not to understand the questioner's objective. It is naive to think that Indian rejects anything, least of all what comes from the west. In fact, Indians are way too enamored with everything Western. The question is about "why there is no insistence on teaching our children our civilizational achievements and instead there is plenty of exposure to Shakespeare, Greek classics and history of English royalty?" He just doesn't seem to grasp what Bibek ji or Pavitra ji are saying. Is it naivete or plain indifference & lack of effort to gain deeper understanding from the right sources? While he is a right wing intellectual, he still comes across as a colonized mind. There is dharmic framework that let's us see the world differently from a Western framework. It is through that lens, within the context of our civilizational values that we need to absorb what comes from the West or anywhere else. If not, we only have confusion and dysfunctional political systems, economy, educational system and all else. Listen to Bibek ji and Pavitra ji who so beautifully expressed her idea of India through the medium of dance!

Good observation Mr.Praveen I had similar view about Swapan.. There is a "reinvention of intellectual colonialism" that is happening in India right now..in fact most of those who are disgusted with Left Wing limp dick "idea of India" narrative have gone ahead with this realignment, slowly replacing the earlier intellectual landlords with themselves... So now there is a RIGHT WING BLEEDING HEART LiBERAL clique forming with the EXACT same STRUCTURE of that of the Left wing. Rajeev Desai, Gurucharan Das, Swapan, Tavleen Singh, Anupam Kher, Vivek Agnihotri, Kanchan Gupta, Makrand, etc.etc. are fighting the intellectual terror of the Left Liberals but are clearly in danger of reinventing the same narrative. P.S Bibek Deb Roy did.not come out sounding like the others (English educated even though he is speaking in English) so I did not think he was in that clique.

It takes ONLY a person with the knowledge of not just the GROSS but also the SUBTLE and the CAUSAL aspects of existence to know really why the BHARATEEYA systems are the way they are... SWAPAN and his ilk have no attitude as well as aptitude to appreciate the above so they go on making half assed efforts to criticise why we as a race were poor "documentors" or why he takes Al BERUNI seriously... Oral traditions have made sure divine, esoteric knowledge of the Vedas and the Upanishads is STILL around.. It's NOT some printing press that did it for us..even today any effort to take away the SOUND/ORAL /Guru -Shishya parampara Way of learning and replace it with books, is causing complete breakdown in the mastery of those great works. I know this because I study the Rgveda with young kids and they are losing what the Guru is reciting when they concentrate more.on what's in the text.

Topic, "meaning of Bhaarat" hota toh jyada justified hota. Sindh, Punjab, Bengal (Bangladesh) mein native Sanatan ka genocide kara kar aur Bhaarat mein natives ke Human Rights violation ke baad agar ye bhi nahi toh kya tribute doge apne forefathers ko. british studges aur sepoy ho jo India bolte ho jaise british looters ko Bhaarat naam ka pata he nahi tha. stop playing white skin inferioirty complex. khud ke log jaichando ki tarah harkat karte hain. Ye wo mandbuddhi hain jinko apne forefathers ka nahi pata lekin jinko kisi outsider ke dwara likhi passage of India bataati hai ki India kya hai. I mean WTF? Aur english mein baat karne ki koi jarrurat nahi. Bhaarat ko connect karne ke liye outsider looter language khud mein congress ke blunders mein se ek hai. cheen ka model dekho. They know who they are. Iss panel ke bahut se mandbuddhi sach mein sochte hain ki democracy se pehle Bhaarat ka koi model he nahi tha democractic jahaan kisi ne kiski ko invade nahi kiya aur jahaan propserity aaj ke gdp mein world ki 25% thi. Pehla alloy jahaan Ashokan Pillar ke roop mein khada hai wahaan ye log outsiders ke gulaam hain aaj bhi. koi gauri ko dhund raha aur koi british ki chaat raha. Matlab bikul khaali. Kaise intellect hain? AntiBhaarat, antiForefathers. Bhaarat ko foreign lens se dekhkar chilaate hain english accent mein dalit aur caste system. I mean WTF? mein germany rehta hu. Yahaan ki society bhi service based thi. Jo gha banaate the wo they bauer, jo ek sirname hai germany mein. Jo shoes banaate the wo the shuhmacher, jo ek sirname hai. Aise he Varnas ko defame karne mein jo jaichando ne foriegn sepoy bankar apne forefathers ko cheat kiya wo history mein record ho gaya hai. All varnas were equal based on who you are. Bhramins have to do with educated gurus and qualified people, Kshatriyas were warriors and region saviors, Sudras were architect and management guys, Vashiyas were business people who make weapons and engaged in barter system. now biritsh and muslim looters, invaders, outsiders, occupiers not only did successful propaganda against Bhramins but feed poor Bhaaratiya through missonaries that you are poor because of some oppression where in reality is the entire world see oppression but the oppression is between wealthy and poor and is entirely financial based and have nothing to do with prsonal discrimination. Otherwise Bhaarat would not have been the most diverse country in the world. But tribal looters cannot digest wealthy Bhaarat and to justify their loot they need to coin some propaganda. So they appointed sepoys like ram mohan roy, ahmed khan, gandhi, malala, middle east appointment which goes till now and this a pattern to first inject the disease and than come and say well we have the cure. This is how western imperialist looters worked. Not only Bhaarat but whereever these looters went like Brazil or america etc they created divide in society. Other than Bhaarat these looters wiped out the natives of the land. realizing this we have such panels who do not wish to refer to Bhaarat. aur ishi Bhaarat mein ab court mein ye cases jaate hain ki kya Ram Mandir ban na chahiye ya nahi. If Sanatan Hindus won't take the gun and demolish sold out courts who give verdict on gay that they can fuck any hole they see and can fuck any animal before chopping it before serving it into supermarket in plastic packs. but same sold out court is silent on issues like Ram Temple. Its utter #shame. #shame of being born in such place who didn't look after the native religion where that religion was born.

India as a nation slowly started forming into existence in the second half of the 19th century. It is during this time that poets started writing patriotic songs and thr was a lot of literature dedicated for the cause of the freedom struggle. Was thr any prolific literature for india’s independence when the mughals attacked our country? No. Because thr was no country at that time. Thr was no country and therefore no patriotism and therefore no literature. The indian peninsula was a thriving civilisation since thousands of years but we were not a nation and thr was definitely no consciousness of nationhood before the 1850’s.

lzydwg Arey. U say Nationhood is a modern phenomenon but India was a Civilizational Nation since ages. Thts contradictory. What is the difference between a Nation State and Civilizational Nation?!
@NewBeginning2020
@NewBeginning2020 5 жыл бұрын
lzydwg It is mighty convenient of you now to call this ancient civilization or group of intermingling ancient civilizations as a Nation in hindsight. I agree that the indian peninsula had thriving civilizations for centuries but to call them a single sovereign Nation that was attacked by the Mughals is totally false. Mughals entered the indian peninsula and plundered it and then settled upon it. But the mughals did not commit any crime against Indians because india was not in existence at that time.
@NewBeginning2020
@NewBeginning2020 5 жыл бұрын
The mughals committed horrible atrocities against the hindus. But guess what, hindu is not synonymous with India and therefore any atrocities committed against hindu’s before 1800’s cannot be considered as atrocities against India. In 1850 we consciously began to form a Nation State that included all religions. So India does not belong to the Hindus alone. Now i agree Islam is a bad influence but we have to deal with it within the constitution and not make up false history for it.

lzydwg And thus we come to the final point of our discussion. If india belongs to the Hindu’s then ppl like u r challenging the constitution without even realizing it. We agree on majority of the issues but i m afraid the small differences in our POV makes a huge difference to the constitutional fabric of this nation.

Mr. DESHPANDE The concept of nation as a homeland existed even during Ramayana days...Lord Ram, upon killing Ravana and giving away Lanka to Vibhishana, said "Apee Swarnamayi Lanka, Na Tu Maam, Lakshmana, Rochate..Janani Janma Bhoomischa Swargaadapi Gareeyasi" "This land of Gold, Lanka, does not impress me the least, Oh Laxmana. MOTHER and MOTHERLAND are more honourable than Heavens..." You are.making cogent points outside of this post but have not bothered to check that the words HINDU and INDIA are the same...atleast the ones that coined them saw them as GEOGRAPHIC / TERRITORIAL entities and NOT ETHNIC or RELIGIOUS entities...

@@versatiletheone2835 The ATHEISM of BHARAT and the BHARATEEYAS is one that does NOT ACCEPT Vedas as ultimate authority... It's very unlike that of the Western world. YOU MAY NOT BELIEVE in the existence of a GOD or Supreme Force and that does NOT make you an atheist in India but if you don't consider Vaidika Dharma as Ultimate Authority, then you are an atheist... Buddhism is Atheist (Naasthika) and Jainism is Semi-atheist. And just because these are Atheist religions, no one EVER discriminated or even worse persecuted them. They were intellectually challenged and defeated fairly and squarely.
