I used FreeCAD Gear Workbench to design a set of miter gears and I 3D printed them
First part of the video is understanding pitch circles and apex, the relation and their respective positions in a combination of 3D sketches
Once you understand the design, it will allow you to do any ratio at any angle.
There is excellent information at this link:
www.sdp-si.com/resources/elem...
Then I create gears and placed them so they mesh at a 90 degree angle
Next, I recreate a similar gear as the one I made in Fusion and trim it using a boolean operation with a tool body
Finally I increase the size of the generated gear to get the result I wanted

Some questions- I have FreeCAD 0.19 (realthunder fork) but mine looks nothing like yours, and I don't have the gear option in my menu. What modifications did you do to make your version of FreeCAD have these?

@@jacquesfavre999 Yes- found that- thanks! What did you do to change the interface look of FreeCAD itself- that looks very different from standard interface. Appears much more usable- can you share what it is?

@@CaskStrength777 Not Much, go to Ptreferences, Display, colors, Background color, Simple color, I went for grey, all the way down in color window, adjust how light or dark in the far right slider

Based on my limited knowledge and some research this is what I came up with. Backlash allowance as a rule of thumb the average backlash is defined as 0.04 divided by the diametral pitch; the minimum being 0.03 divided by the diametral pitch and the maximum 0.05 divided by the diametral pitch. Can you tell me how you came up with your calculation. thanks

The backlash I chose is fir 3d printed gears with very loose tolerances +/- 0.2 mm .2 on dimension Plus .2 on roundness On 2 gears Max deviation can be as much as .8 So I chose 1mm backslash much more than metal machined gears

@@jacquesfavre999 I understand this is not an exact science. You are showing 41.67 micro meters. This is less that what is suggested for metal gears. Sorry this is probably the least critical item. I was just curious. You took one over the number of teeth and multiplied it by .5 from what I understood. By the way they posted a note on GitHub after I posted an issue on precautions to take when changing the height of the gear so as not to affect the angle. Thank you for your great video and for responding.

That is a formula I found by trial and error and Its close enough for my use I found it with involute gears, seems to work here

@@jacquesfavre999 My problem right now is trying to understand how you came up with the profile. Backlash is really an adjustment of gear size and not critical for 3d printed gears. I have going over the video a few times. Thanks for responding.
