I see some people creating a trough around the bottom of the boss to encourage uniform wall thickness where the boss originates from...is that really needed? it's mentioned in quite a few guidelines but I never see anyone on KZbin do it that way.

Hi by a trough do you mean a relief cut? I haven't seen this and would imagine putting a cut at the bottom of a boss would encourage stresses and weaken it.

I design housings/clamshells for a living and uniform wall thickness is 100% needed. Nobody on KZbin making these videos does a thickness analysis because they don't actually know about design for manufacturability, they just know how to make things in CAD.
