The first step is to TAKE INVENTORY of your existing entry and source the perfect pieces that will store those items, keep them organized, and finally show off your style. Would you rather… mirror in the entry? Or artwork?

What an entrance needs most is a padded bench with shoe storage underneath - a couple of open shelves is good so that guests can see where they put their shoes. If your household prefers wearing slippers or indoor shoes in the house rather than socks or bare feet, keep indoor shoes on the upper shelf and outdoor shoes on the lower shelf. The next thing it needs is a _full length_ mirror. You need to inspect your whole outfit before you leave the house, and it's a lot easier for young children to copy your model and learn to see when they have a food spill down their front if they can actually see the mirror too. Good lighting is a must, of course. How you do that is up to you. Good lighting around the mirror with a very high colour rendering index is critical to actually seeing yourself as others will see you. Storage for winter coats, scarves, backpacks, summer hats, and other accessories, is going to be necessary. If your kids are routinely barefoot in the house, it's good to keep some spare socks near their shoes. If you wear thick socks with your walking boots, ditto. If you leave your wallet and car keys in the entry, though, please remember that is the first place a thief would look for them. Better to take those further into the house and store them somewhere less obvious - unless you prefer that if someone breaks into your house to steal your car keys, they just get the keys and go without bothering you or your family. That's a valid choice too; just make sure it _is_ a choice and not something you did without thinking about it. I read a while ago that for commercial buildings, a three metre doormat at the entry will stop 95% of street dirt from entering further into the building. An option for a private home is a big porch and the three metres of doormat to be on the porch rather than indoors. Make sure it's wheelchair traversible and also that it will drain and self-dry easily after driving rain. When you're designing or renovating your home, a water outlet and an outdoor-rated electricity outlet in this area will let you plug in a pressure washer to get your mat thoroughly clean for minimal effort.

Hi Julie Really like these shorts ! The two shelf storage unit right at the entry is key. There are more than keys to put there. Sunscreen bug spray sunglasses phone chargers gum tissues and baseball caps. I do this with a two shelf concealed cabinet and two slim open shelves one at the bottom and one at the top to hide all that stuff. A few Shoes go on that vinyl covered bottomed shelf. Yes this was a custom made shelf by an inexpensive cabinet company. It’s not solid wood. Opposite is a very slim 4 inch wide 2 /1/2 foot long umbrella stand. Water hog rug at the door. This is the back door most used. Coats go in the small mud room along with bags knapsacks and winter accessories. I had a carpenter build me 18 shoe cubbies below and above the other half on top 3 longer locker like openings for short coats hoodies and one of those lockers i had holes put in so it could be used for adjustable grommet holed shelving so I really only gave 2 lockers for coats. and theee 16 inch square cubbies on top of that. Also put outlets near these doors for charging all your stuff. I use up a larger share of those shoe cubbies. 😂this was key to keep everything for the family ready to go. It freed up the front door for good coats and other outerwear you needed for odd weather. But that front door closet also houses games vacuum camera gear etc. small houses need lots of creative thinkers. Seating check also. Mirrors. Nope. Vertical storage is good too. Hang up the keys or charging cords use nice hooks or nice open shelves and put bowls on them secured with museum putty so they don’t move when you grab the keys. Nice to have a good looking clock there. In old days that’s where the hall clocks or grand father clocks went. I have an old working spring turning ibm punch clock with time cards at the back door. The contractors love that one!! I do have a front entry which looks into the living room as soon as you enter so i use that room to create the vibe of the house. I do however place seasonal decor at the back door. Now there’s a pumpkin placemat there for Halloween. Sorry my post is longer than your video. 🙃 Thank you😊 for the tips. You really look great! See you next week! Margaret

Hi Julie I like the grandfather clock. I actually have two in the living room at opposite corners but the other one is a floor standing hall clock one of my neighbors gave me. When we were doing zoom calls people really liked to hear the chimes. They would laugh after hearing the second one go off. Oh you have two? Yep! It’s old world and meditative. Winding them is a reflective act. Not sure why people don’t want them. You stop noticing the chimes. Really not disruptive bc the chimes become part of your world. Margaret

Great video, but could you do one on garage entryways we leave the large garage door open almost all day because I do work out there. I like the sunshine and wind and it’s difficult to get to our front door so everyone uses the garage door as an entrance right into the kitchen not much can be done there, so Hass to be in the garage. Julie, oh my goodness you are so amazing!!!!!! I’ve been watching and listening to you for the entire build of my home, a year and a half now . I’ve learned so many wonderful things from you Thank you thank you thank you for all you do I so appreciate you. I was getting ready to find how to send a message to inquire about not wearing shoes in my home , then I start watching this video and you address that. I’ve always wanted to live in a space where shoes are not worn it would feel so much cleaner without them. My question is do you have little slippers for people to wear inside the home? finally moving in begins weekend it’s been such a long journey. I’m so happy to have found you at the beginning 🙏🏼❤️
@youbetcha108
@youbetcha108 2 жыл бұрын
Yes. It is becoming ever more common for people to not wear street shoes in the home. Wherever we lived apartments or homes we don’t wear street shoes inside. Disgusting street grime and poisonous deadly chemicals asbestos lead doo doo saliva etc. But older people need shoes for stability and protection so I let my parents wear theirs and workers wear booties over their shoes. You can also put runners down when workers come in.Take off your shoes when you are at home. You can wear slippers. But watch out for slippery bare wood stairs. I would carpet them. One fall on the slippery stairs by a shoeless socked visitor and you are on notice of a hazard.

@@youbetcha108 actually no, to the wearing of thick cushioned sneakers for older people. Older people have been misled by shoe companies & podiatrists. My husband & I switched to a completely flat shoe, without thick padding & it’s shaped like our feet. We no longer wear anything else because the stability, & connection to the ground was so much better. It takes getting used to because the muscles in your foot aren’t being used when you wear sneakers or traditional footwear. Xero shoes are what we are wearing, but they’re many other brands now. Our feet don’t hurt by the end of the day, as they previously did, and I feel much more stable and sure footed. My husband has a normal arch, & my feet are very flat. We were both amazed at how much better we felt in Xero shoes.

Will you please consider making a video on a 'barely-there foyer' with a super narrow entryway (less than 3 ft). Thanks for all the great tips.

Great video, but do I need to have a mirror? I have been thinking of getting a peacock painting from an artist that I know. Peacocks are well known for bringing luck, ausperity into houses. What do you think? I was thinking about putting a mirror in the living room instead or opposite from the entrance ( I mean not facing the main door)

All beautiful ideas! Going to incorporate them soon!!! Thanks again for another awesome video Julie! My entryway is of decent size. Although, the bigger wall is not facing the main door, but it faces the hallway where all the bedrooms are. Not sure if I should be placing mirror on that wall if I want to follow Feng Shui/Vaastu (?) Also, my entire foyer is tiled. Rest of the home is dark wood floor. Not sure if a rug would look nice on tiles or even stay put as I fear it might be slippery. Any suggestions?

I have tile in my foyer and laminate in the house- I don’t place a rug because it’s such a tight area. You have to determine what makes the most sense for your space

Hi Julie, I loved the video. It is really helpful to design my entryway. I have the storage /console /shoe cabinet + seating + mirror but I am juggling between area rug or no rug. I purchased one runner area rug and I love it but it's slightly colorful printed having some colors in contrast to my boho decor like white vase and white book stack on the console /shoe cabinet. Do u think a colorful runner goes with this decor? , or should i get another one? Also rug moves and I need is to tape it to avoid tripping hazzard , Having small mat doenst help since people would remove shoes after stepping in. Let me know your thoughts. Looking forward for your advice!! :)

If this entry runner is neutral, it will invite the eyes to land beyond the space and into your home. Something to think about Khushboo 🤔

Good information and ideas for the front area. Our front door opens up to a 6' x 6' raised area that faces a basic closet door. About 6 feet to the right of the closet door is a stairway to the second floor. We normally enter the house through the garage where we keep our cars, and usually use the front door for guests, so no storage is needed. We are thinking of removing that closet to expand the area for astethics only. Do you have any thoughts on this. Due to the weather in Southern California, the need for normal closet needs ( jackets, umbrellas. .) is so rare we have only used the closet as a junk area.

I have a small hall/entry way an at the moment the front door is dark on the inside I’m thinking it might be better painted light neutral the same as the walls either side thought it would make it lighter and look a bit bigger in that area ?

Yes you can have a console table, if you have enough floor space. I have a very small hallway, & can't fit in a table or a seat.

You can always mount a shelf or ledge- frees up floor space, but will provide ample surface space 🙌🏻

Fantastic video…. But… I have a front foyer that is used for guests only. In your opinion, what are the necessary elements of a guest only entry Versus the way my family and I go in and out of the house via the garage door.?
@JulieKhuu
@JulieKhuu 2 жыл бұрын
Treat that garage entry like your front entry with a huge focus on storage. I treat the “guest” entry the same since I also want a landing space for guests to place their purses, keys and coats once in the door. Mirror is essential, artwork not so much.

Hi Julie , happy new year! When you walk into my home, you're entering my small dining room with a round dining table..gas fireplace...along with a cabinet across from front door. My question is..how would you style this entry/dining room !!!???? Thank you in advance ☺

Check out my video in dining room design mistakes Jacklyn! I’d go ALL out being the first introduction into the home. Keep the entry table minimal and functional- maybe just a small plant and valet station. Let it be all about the dining room

Hi Julie. Video is very informative. Could you please do a video about open floor plan living room and dining area? When i open my front door, i will see an open space and divide it to be 1/2 living room and 1/2 of the room is dining room. I cant find a good spot to put entry way furniture.
