This method is not only basis for exams, this is the knowledge you will require as a design engineer, softwares will give output whatever input you give but as a engineer we have to understand whether software giving values are correct or no

I think load acts more near or on the footing, So critical depth can be calculated by considering length from the center of the footing plus twice the depth of footing for two way shear
