Today I want to do a full read-through of a design book published by Apple in 2016. It’s titled “Designed by Apple in California” and showcases the company’s history with 450 product photos spanning from 1998 to 2015. It was sold in two sizes, small and large, which carried price tags of $200 and $300. Now that may seem steep for what’s essentially a picture book, but they do feature some premium elements. For example, a custom linen hardcover sourced from a textile company in Germany, and a proprietary type of paper called “Apple-specific Heaven 42.” Plus, the metallic edge coloring gives the book a sophisticated finish that resembles the aluminum of many Apple products.

To be honest that's a lot of wasted paper due to the poor book design. If you cannot include suplementary descriptions IN the book, and force reader to use a manual to use the book, You're doing something wrong... All these empty sheets of paper - thats not clean design, that's megalomania resulting in poor user experience of such a basic item.

I don’t mean to say this with any disrespect; this is simply what I’ve noticed throughout my lifetime so far: Typically, people who are hellbent on bashing Apple come from less prosperous socioeconomic backgrounds. That’s simply what I’ve noticed having grown up in California, having used windows for many years, and even having worked at Apple. I also went to college in a rural area in another part of the country, so that gave me an even more diverse perspective on tech products and their respective consumers. People who have a bit more monetary freedom tend to either own android/windows and Apple, or only Apple. I like both-I prefer Apple. They can both do everything... everything. Obviously you need to pay more to get similar specs on an Apple device, but independent of price, it’s entirely up to preference. So many consumers can’t stop at “preference”-they feel the need to introduce the negative aspect of their choice (i.e. why they DIDN’T choose the OTHER). You can spot that kind of bitter ignorance a mile away when they go out of their way to bash the hell out of either side instead of focusing on the positive aspect (i.e. why they DID choose what they HAVE).

I like how apple is often made fun of for their design choices, but seeing this book you realize they are always before their time. Some of the products made in the 90s look really modern to this day.
