Hey Carolyn, the way you planned this garden, and the way it looks later, is the way we usually plan and plant our gardens where I come from. Not always with all usable plants, usually with perennials and ornamentals, but combinations make the best gardens ;) Right now I am planning to add more herbs and spices in the garden close to our house. We hope to be able to rent a plot of land next season, to use for vegetables. In The Netherlands most people who live in the city or in some town, who love plants and have the space for it, have gardens like a cottage garden, or sort of the same in pots for the balcony. Some have a little plot of land somewhere on the outskirts of the town, for flowers or veggies. Often, when we see streets of cities or towns in the US (in movies or via googlemaps) we marvel about the lack of plants and the excess of grass around the homes. Ah well. The joy and adventures of different cultures ;) Take care, God bless, and lots of love, Diana

Get some kind of mulch like wood chips or clean straw to cover the ground where you want the garden. The ground will get very soft and all you will have to do is pull back the mulch where each plant will have their new home and plant. Much Love and Blessings

How do you not get massive amounts of slugs while using straw? I used straw on my beds and ended up with….no exaggeration, 18 slugs on one single pepper plant one morning after picking them all out by hand the night before and zillions of others throughout. As soon as I removed the straw, my starts were able to survive.

Your cottage garden is looking great! It will be exciting to see more of it as it grows and begins to fill in the space. I love that you will have a seating area to enjoy your coffee! I have never grown a cottage garden or an herb garden, so my question is two part: First, can I put herbs in pots in the cottage garden and then bring them inside in the fall to keep them going over winter? Or is it better to just put them in the ground (especially perennials) and then preserve the harvest in the fall? Thank you!

You might try Mullein (zones 3-9) for colds and congestion, Ecgincea (zones 3-9) for colds, Willow (6-8) for pain. Turmeric and ginger (>7), and Spilanthus will need to be brought, if you can grow at all. You might regret the very invasive, including root Morning Glory. I might be wrong about the layout, but some of your areas are so large that plants can't be reached from the path. This can lead to soil compaction, dirty shoes, and inaccessibility.

I created a potager with herbs, quick grab vegetables and of course flowers that I can cut for arrangements for my home. I’m loving it and yours looks spectacular. I’d love to see updates at different stages of growth. How are you going to to treat it for winter interest as it is so close to the home? Love your labels. I used branches to create teepees as well. Still working on creating a low waddle style edging. Are you going to create a children’s garden? I’m considering to create an adjacent area for my grandchildren to garden with miniature varieties of edibles and dwarf flowers. Please share your sorrel soup recipe. Thanks for sharing !!

I have good luck with the egyptian walking onions. have 2 year old plants to dig up and 1 year old plants to keep growing. this way i always have green onion stalks and real onions in the late summer. that garden will be gorgeous. wishing you success. good luck with it
