This was a perfect video! Thinking of mini-homesteading after retirement on 8 acres with other family members. Will start slowly but your drawing exactly what we have even the creek and all except for the North/south direction. I just found your channel so will have to binge watch but I am hoping you have videos on how to put all this into action. For instance starting a garden, checking for soil etc. then how to plant fruit trees, starting a chicken coop. My other relatives raise beef on the other side of our property just like you have it drawn!! Our family side will do the other half of your drawing. Thanks for sharing this so much!!! So so gets the juices flowing on planning this all out!!!

I dont currently live on a homestead. I knew everything already, buuuut this was really helpful allllll in one video and something i can show my wife!

My wife and I are apartment homesteaders, we use walmart plants for a veg garden, we have a mini rex for fertilizer for the garden. A counter herb garden that grows greens for bunny food and some salad scraps they can have too. we also grow everbearing strawberries, cucumbers and cherry tomatoes from walmart for salads all summer long. we do all this with a cattle panel by a bright window inside, or some times on a porch. just make sure there is something under to catch the water like a plate or old pie pan/feed tray. (if you have dogs dont get tomatoes the stalks are toxic unless you can do it in a separate room or porch.)

We are looking at starting a homestead from scratch so this is perfect. Unfortunately we’re starting from conventional farmland so will be very poor soil and no timber. Hoping to get a cover crop down before winter so we can do a green manure next year but not sure if we have enough time for that.

Also deciding if we want to do 5 acres or closer to 10. Definitely don’t need 10 to start because we want to take it slow like you said but want to have plenty of space down for everything we might want down the road with cows being the largest. We’re pretty dry where we are so I think having a larger pasture area would be best.

find a cow farmer nearby ask if you can haul off some cowshit, sometime you can get some for free.

Would you have rabbits just for compost ... Like how many chickens and rabbits would create enough compost for the garden?

Rabbits are another great one for meat. I didn’t talk about composting in this but you could make a good amount of compost with the laying hen flock

@@tannerfarmstead we use rabbits for compost cause they are cold compost unlike chickens. saves space cause you don't need to season it.

We do, its a cold compost so it does not need to be composted if you don't want to (the poo anyway, i'd dilute the urine if you use it) we use minirex as they are considered indoor pets and we are apartment homesteaders atm. so we cant have chickens.
