As a professional nail tech: what Desi said is true. 90% of ur nail health depends on your nail tech. A good nail tech will work any gel polish. A good nail tech will put even layers, detailed work into the cuticle, not have the polish run to the cuticle. If any gel touches and cures on ur skin, its going to lift. Some say OPI doesn’t last but I say, if a polish isn’t working for you, your nail tech probably isn’t skilled enough.

As a prof nail tech can I ask: I’m tired of getting acrylic fake nails but I still want the look of it and the strength that comes with it. I’ve heard of acrylic overlay which I think is essentially the same thing just with your own natural nail. Or gel polish and layering it? What do you think

Get a cuticle pen, like you i did all sorts of nail care methods only for my nails to break soon after. Just like your internal bones, they need to stay moisturized so that they do not become dry and therefore inflexible and brittle. The moment i used a cuticle pen 1 ~ 2+ times a day my nails stopped peeling and breaking especially at the sides.

Extra tips: jojoba oil and avocado are the only things that WILL actually absorb and help your nails. Jojoba nail oil is MAJOR KEY. You can use biotin but you can have bad results too. Don’t buff your nails and keep them painted 24/7 (even clear polish) to protect ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️🔥
@de723867 жыл бұрын
ella don’t keep them painted? Or do?

Diana Escobar always have polish on your nails, even if you only use a clear polish, it just acts as a barrier to protect. For some schools/jobs people can’t have painted nails, so clear is best! X

Also my nails are really strong like takes a lot of effort to clip them BUT they just break like from the sides etc I mean getting into skinny jeans they break from the sides! But at the same time they are very strong if that makes sense. They aren't bendable is I guess what I mean. How can I prevent this random constant breaking? Thanks a lot in advance
@ellabernardini7 жыл бұрын
sn12 no probs, we’re all pals here! So a buffer basically a large file shaped like a block (sometimes it has a rubber instead to ‘shine’ nails). Basically this is used to smooth out the surface or get rid of extra product/acrylic/gel etc. BUT it strips away the layers of your nails and is super harmful to your nails, especially if you’re trying to grow them out. Also if your nail tech uses a drill it does the same thing but more! Xx

If you're a girl on a budget and still want pretty gel nails without paying an arm and a leg for manis, just get an UV gel curing lamp and a gel top coat. Using bases and regular polishes and the a cured gel top coat is enough to keep your nails strong by doing it yourself! #strongnailslongnails

Same, girl! Same. My nails have never been stronger than when I started doing gel. I know people say it can weaken your nails, but that has not been my experience. It was at first, but I bought a kit (red carpet manicure for anyone interested) so that I could be sure they were being done the way I want (cheaper too). And I've been doing it for 2 years and they're strong and healthy! People are always shocked when they find out my nails are real.

Gel nail polish did protect my nails but honestly my sister-in-law told me to start rubbing my cuticles with baby oil or vitamin E, and my nails grew super long. It made my nails super strong as well. So anytime I want to grow my nails now, that’s what I do.

Desi - you are speaking my language!! I can 100% relate to your nail journey, as I went through the EXACT same ordeal. One thing that has helped me tremendously, for all of your viewers, is OPI NAIL ENVY!!! They have various colored boxes (red is for dry & brittle, green is the original formula, etc.). I started out with the red box for dry & brittle nails, and once that bottle was finished, I switched over to the green box, the original formula. I have put so many people up on this Nail Envy!! It is THE BEST base. You are supposed to put a clear coat on daily. I do it every other day. At the end of about 2 weeks, I wipe it clean and start fresh. ALSO! I had to thoroughly train my cuticles and nail beds. The most important thing I learned in my natural nail growth journey is..... anything that we show love to, grows. Whether it's our nails, hair, plants, people, whatever. You show it love, it will grow. XO

I always wanted to have long nails, but whenever I would try to grow them out, they would peel & break. I got a acrylics for a short period, and then switched to hard gels for a couple of years. The hard gels worked the best for me. In two years, I think I broke a nail only 2 or 3 times. It also helped to grow out my natural nails underneath. I JUST got them removed 2 days ago because they are just not practical in my life anymore and I couldn't believe how long my natural nails had grown! I decided to go shorter for now, and am planning on doing regular gel manicures just like you did. And yes, a GOOD NAIL TECH MAKES ALL THE DIFFERENCE!

Desi omg! You actually inspired me to cut the acrylics and sns powder and everything and try to just get gel polish and let my nails grow out! The results have been soooo crazy! My nails have grown out so long and I haven’t broken one since I’ve gone to the gel manicure either!!! And let me tell you my nails were always SOOO weak I literally would break a nail every week dude! For people struggling you really have to go every two weeks to keep getting the gel manicures, have them soak off the gel with acetone with little cotton balls and aluminum foil (peeling the gel is bad it rips your nail btw so don’t let nail techs do that) I used to think gel sucked Bc I had one bad experience and it didn’t last as long but it for sure just depends on the nail tech and also the brand of gel, because I change my color and stuff every time and some gels have lasted longer than others meaning some peel faster than others. I’ve had some last almost 3 weeks before! I also think it’s important to get the actual manicure part because the gel just seems to stick better to my nails every time i do! Every time I haven’t done an actual manicure it peels faster! Anyways 😂 my whole point is just do what Desi did and just go for the gel because that’s what I did and I’m honestly still so shocked!! I truly thought nothing would ever work for my nails.... I’m rambling but love you Desi thanks for the nail inspo because it changed my nail game 🍗💅🏼💯

So this actually worked for me too. I had surgery in July and no energy to do anything for about 3 months. I got a gel manicure so I didn't have to worry about my nails and went religiously every 2 weeks for removal and a new application. My nails got soooooo long and never broke. Removing the gel properly is EVERYTHING. Don't rush the process--soak the gel until it slides off!!

I used to bite my nails for many years until my best friend recommended OPI Nail Envy original nail strengthener and I swear I was hooked! My nail started growing with 5 days and they felt stronger. Within a month my nails grew long enough to get a manicure! I’ve been recommending it to all the ladies in my family and they are all hooked on this. It really works and I swear by it ! Initially you apply two coats and then one coat every day for 5 days, then you remove it and start again the same procedure until you see you nails grow. Then I apply one coat underneath a coloured nail polish. But I have to keep using it because the minute I stop wearing it my nails break 😒 but it’s so worth it

I started growing my nails about a month ago. I had acrylics for the last two years with breaks in between. When I changed salons and had my acrylics removed I could feel how thin my nails were, I was shocked and my nail technician said I should’ve give it a rest now. In the last month I’ve been letting them grow, they grow quite fast. I have stopped getting acrylics now and I only get a gel layer to protect my nails just as Desi mentioned. This is a much better option, your nails grow but are protected. I think 2-3 more visits and I will have shorter nails which no longer feel this thin. I also take vitamins, just some hair and nails ones. I feel so much better with my own nails, seeing those acrylics come off and not being too concerned about the state of my nails has now changed and I’ll continue keeping it this way. Honestly, one off acrylics are okay but if you keep getting them redone you will see exactly why they aren’t a great option and that growing your own ones are much better. Great advice Desi 💕

Nail oil, nail oil, nail oil! Olive or coconut oil is okay, jojoba is better. (almost any type or blend will help with frequent application, apply to cuticles and nail, including underside of the tip) Don't let nail techs buff or file down the surface of your nails unless absolutely necessary. Don't use nail hardeners, as they reduce flexibility and make your nails brittle. Nail oil helps keep them strong but flexible so that when they are put under pressure they bend rather than break. (go watch simply nailogicals vedio on how to grow your nails)

Always have been and currently am a nail biter 😭 I got acrylics for awhile and then when I stopped going my nails were so weak they broke and unevenly at that... So I started biting again. Never got just a gel manicure since my nails aren't long enough really to make it look nice, so I'm going to do gel acrylics again, keep filling them in, and then when my nails are grown out enough just get gel manicures like you said! That makes so much sense about how much they file it down too

as a fellow ex-nail biter, try the Bliss Kiss nail oil pen!! it’s the only thing that helped my short nail beds grow longer and keeps my nails from peeling and breaking 👏🏻 also keep your nails out of water as much as possible, it separates the nail layers and makes them more vulnerable to splits and breaks ☝🏻

I totally agree about the gel manicures and not filing the top of your nail. My nail tech said the same thing after I destroyed my nails from ripping off multiple acrylic sets (I know, it was bad). I HAD to get a gel manicure because my nail beds literally had holes in them and were too weak to be left natural. But my nail tech said that it’s not necessary to file down the top of your nails so aggressively for gel manicures ( although it IS required for acrylics and dipping powders). I did the same as Desi (continual gel manis with no top filing), and my nails recovered. I’ve gone through this process multiple times. Right now, in an effort to save money, I’ve been painting my nails at home. I use the “CITRA formaldehyde free nail strengthener” from Nail Tek (purchased at Ulta) as a base coat. I use Seche Vite as a top coat, which I think really helps with keeping the nails thick and strong - about the same strength as a gel manicure TBH. Then, I add an additional layer of top coat every other day. They last at least a week with no chipping or breaking. My nails are now the longest they’ve ever been! I’m a habitual nail biter, but this routine keeps them thick enough to prevent me from biting them. **I do not take any supplements or vitamins for nail growth. Hope this might help some of you!!

LaceyAlexa hamsters&cats I tried adding the vitamin E and it was a disaster. I use just the jajoba oil and pen and it’s been amazing!

Shellac is a BRAND of gel polish from CND. There are lots of different gel polishes, the one she uses is OPI.

yeah i used to have really short stubby nails. one thing i can say is keeping your nails polished helps get them stronger and helps them grow. that’s all i did to get long healthy nails. once i stopped polishing them, they’ve gotten brittle and weak.

It depends on how long you want to grow them! If you want acrylic-style length you pretty much have to be #blessed genetically, but I really strengthened my nails without gels when I was trying to stop picking at my cuticles. I recommend taking really good care of your nail bed and cuticle by using cuticle oil (jojoba is best since it can penetrate the nail plates), using a strengthening base coat, using multiple layers of polish and a gel effect/thickening top coat. You also can wear regular polish over a non-permeable gel top coat (the ones that need to be buffed before they get soaked.)

Use OPI Nail Envy under your polish. 2 coats as your base. My nails refused to grow and now they don't stop!! It's seriously life. I use the one with green lettering. There are a few different ones.

I was also a terrible nail biter!! But ever since I discovered the Sally Hansen Miracle Growth polish (its in a gold bottle) its changed my life!! I can’t remember the last time I bit my nails. They grow long and strong!

Try taking calcium pills once or twice a week and putting on nail strengthener. My nails were the same, even the best top coat couldn't stop them from chipping but doing this really helped them.

my nails also started growing like crazy after gel polish for the first time about a year ago!!! I was a really bad nail biter before and the only thing that helped was acrylics. Once I felt like I had kicked the habit, I decided to let my nails breath and went with gel. Now I maintain my nails at home and they're still going strong, pun intended :) nice to know we've shared the same journey!

I also bite my nails and I have been trying to grow them out for 2 years... It is soooo hard! My wedding is in April and I'm also going through dental hygiene school so polish is a no for me, so I'm having such a hard problem! They hurt so bad when i bite them and you're absolutely correct about picking and trying so hard to get ALL the gel off! And the jello thing does help get them stronger I've heard! Thanks so much for telling your nail story! Now I know I can do it :)

Hey Desi, I'm a nail tech and SNS and most dipping powders are actually acrylic powders. They just all have they're own steps using different resins to harden them. You could just be allergic to the monomer (liquid) from the acrylic nails if they would get it on your skin. That could be part of why your skin was itching! 😘
