"Desolation Row", performed by Gabrielle Louise (www.gabriellelouise.com) with Michael Bellar, in concert at the Institute of Musical Traditions (www.imtfolk.org), Takoma Park, Takoma Park, MD, USA on June 16, 2012.
Gabrielle Louise is a nationally touring troubadour noted for her poignant lyrics (a two-time John Lennon Songwriting Contest finalist, winner of the Jack Maher Songwriting Award) and lush voice. Gabrielle Louise's music is anchored deeply in folk, but undeniably drawn to rich harmonies and melodic adventurism. Her sound has the earthy feel of early Joni Mitchell while also veering into the spirited delivery of fellow genre-hopping artist Martin Sexton. Unafraid to take a random musical escapade in the name of inspiration, Gabrielle is at one moment folkie and ethereal, the next moment a smoky jazz chanteuse. Recently, she's fallen very much in love with Argentine Tango, and is committing time to studying to play and sing tango standards.
Sound: Dave Eisner, Dave Richardson
Camera: Laura Christoplos, Dick Tufts, Annie Odean, Ralph Lillie
Editing: Ralph Lillie

Have you heard Chris Smither’s version? It’s a lot better than this one, IMHO. She goes too slow and it makes the song drag on a bit. If she speeded up, she would be able to sing the missing verses.

Best Desolation on the KZbinr! OK, maybe the Dead version is as good but hey..it's the Dead. But look how Gabrielle can turn this mourning epic poem into a passionate love song. And Michael nudging with his moaning melodica.OK, Tubers, use this as the gateway to hear some of her original songs. The best voice you have never heard...but that will change really soon I suspect. This performance moved me to tears while I tried to keep the console dry! Please share this gemstone. DEE

Just this beautiful voice and guitar. Why the mini-keyboard ?? too bad !
@spadoukie
@spadoukie 9 жыл бұрын
To explain: I produced and engineered the show. The mini keyboard is a melodica. Her partner chose this over the piano to take the place of Bob's mournful harmonica solo in the original. Notice how he kind of pushes the tremolo sound towards her.And, if you watch carefully, he 'bonks' the mic stand at one point. Go to the 'imtfolk' channel and search Gabrielle and check out her Spanish cut. The girl is pure gold and as sweet inside as out. Note: as she finished the piece here, she flips the guitar which says 'Thank you'. It belonged to her recently deceased Dad. Thanks for your interest. DEE
@Yahziboy
@Yahziboy 8 жыл бұрын
+David Eisner I happen to like the melodica a lot for this song. Oddly enough, I think the leader of Steven Colbert's Tonight Show band, "Stay Human" plays the melodica. Just looked up his name: Jon Batiste. I like the way Gabrielle interprets this song. Will check out more songs by her.

Jessica, You are 100% on point. I was the recording engineer and producer of the show. The venue was giving me the "high sign" to wrap it up as we were going into overtime! Gabby and I go way back so this was in a way " Desolation Row Lite" It was also the first time she had used a Neumann KM105S vocal mic so there was a love affair going on with her and the mic which gives her vocal the room to breathe.
