A handheld VHF is a staple in my flight bag, with some common frequencies programmed, and usually the relevant route frequencies either memorized or written on a traditional kneeboard. Guard frequency is 121.5 MHz(for civilian aircraft) which is an emergency frequency. A pilot should switch to this frequency during emergencies due to it being actively monitored by ATC and airliners. However, it still uses the same radio, so if the radio fails for whatever reason it is no longer operative.
