The Pilot did not confirm "left downwind". The controller should have checked, if he got that correctly. After that, it is an obvious miscommunication. Controller says: "turn right". In the perspective of the pilot, he thinks: "of course, I'm turning right - I'm in right traffic". The controller says "your're still headed inbound for right traffic. turn right" Instead, the controller should have to repeat: "You have to change to left traffic. turn right heading 090" (as others also have stated). What I wanted to add is, that "turn right" was exactly what the pilot did. just at the wrong time and with the wrong direction. I think this was also the reason for the too short approach. Instead of continuing the downwind, the pilot turned right to final way too early, resulting in the too steep approach and hard landing.

Obvious major language barrier mixed with expectation bias - however, tower also didn't do the right thing in my opinion by keep telling them to turn right when they were on the right downwind as that was what they intended to do anyway. Instead, a simple heading vector to where tower needed them to go in order to join the left downwind would have made it much more clear to them that they were on the wrong side of the airport. Not saying that pilots should expect babysitting service, but sometimes it's safer to try several ways than saying the same thing over and over and nothing changes.

He’s VFR. And I’ve not operated at this field but it’s a class D and isn’t a radar control tower. They can not legally give radar vectors to VFR aircraft. I do believe he could have given a suggested heading or cardinal direction but the pilot is ultimately responsible for navigation and collision avoidance and does not have to fly the suggested heading. Should the controller have given him a compass heading instead of just turn right?
@phillipmckie49134 ай бұрын
It does not matter, he is in the traffic pattern. Pilots should know the spacing on a downwind leg from the runway. All that the controller wanted was for him to get to the leftdown wind. That is a no brainer.
@EllsworthJohnson-ui1xm4 ай бұрын
No, he should have known that ATC was trying to get him on the left side of the runway, right to any general heading would have been ok

The pilot did not have sufficient English knowledge to understand right turn from landing at 17R
@urbanturbine4 ай бұрын
He had confirmation bias. That whole time he is thinking he is on the correct downwind traffic for 17R and ignored the ATC and proceeded to land. He probably still didnt realize what he did wrong there.

The controller gave a single clearance that was obviously not understood. Instead of repeating constant same orders that can't be understood since the first message was not understood, it's always better to clarify the main information. Turn right is not explicit for a pilot, he actually turned right, in his mind to got closer to the runway, in downwind, and then in base, while the controller expected a 90 degrees right to join left downwind.

Would it not be appropriate for ATC to give precise headings? I get this guy didn't speak English at all and that is not ATC's fault but after it is clear the plane isn't doing what ATC wants, shouldn't more precise instructions be given? Not a pilot or anything.
@PromptSupercritical5 ай бұрын
"Turn right, enter left downwind for runway 17-right" is all the instruction any competent pilot should need. It's highly unlikely that anything more specific would have helped this guy.
@Peter-sv4mk5 ай бұрын
@@PromptSupercriticalThat should have been enough, but that obviously wasn’t working, so it still might have helped if tower had issued a suggested heading. “Turn right” is less specific than “suggest heading 270” and could definitely be a simpler instruction for an overwhelmed and confused pilot to understand and follow.
