Misconception 2 is almost entirely from WoW. After playing for 15yrs I can say that sometime during Cataclysm x-pac saying the words "first time here" as a tank got you kicked, or everyone leaving. Eventually it spread to the point that everyone needed to know exactly what to do with everything (even trash) or get chewed out for being a "shit casual loser".

Ahhh good old WoW toxicity >.< I left WoW last summer for FF and haven't looked back, I really love it here! I actually read that some people are complaining about queue times now taking upwards of 1.5 hours for DPS, simply because there aren't enough tanks and healers - due to the playerbase shrinking and also nobody wanting to do those roles due to the toxic nature of the community.

i don't see an problem with this (minus the MCH pulling) best way to learn is to do, it's even better to learn it early on since earlier dungeons are so easy to heal that you can easily make mistakes and be completely fine concidering 1 heal basically heals you for 50-75% of your HP. this would set them up for later content (and if they're story skippers for their 1st playthrough on an tank ... then, yeah ... got no nice words for that person, they should be forced to do earlier dungeons before entering later dungeons even with an story skip)

@@DarkDyllon except the healer was new as well and panicked, and I took way too much damage trying to corral the mobs (didn't use mitigation as well) The healer was certainly not healing for half. Perhaps if the tank and healer don't have their job stones, maybe don't immediately wall to wall pull for them, or actually take half a minute to explain what you're doing? It's a simple ask.

Tanking as a role is a straightforward as other roles. If you can do Sastasha, you can do Twinning. The flow is always the same. pick up trash mobs, kill trash mobs, take on boss, repeat. New mechanics are usually quite survivable, and if you let your party know you're new to the dungeon, they'll fill you in if there's something you missed without much fuss (and the need for that is often very rare). Raids and trials are often a completely different kettle of fish. 95% of the difficulty in a raid/trial isn't role specific, it's from being new to the often lethal mechanics in general. In these cases, you usually aren't the only tank in play, so ultimately, role shouldn't hold you back from showing up as a tank (you may have a higher chance of NOT dying, in fact)

The way i explain tanking when someone calls it boring in game, where i have less time to expound on details as you have here, is "Yeah, tanks dps rotation is simpler, but we are managing 2 rotations (damage and mitigation), we set the pace of the dungeon, we decide where the boss stands, and it feels cool to be face to face with the big threat thatd squash your samurai."
@cynicalmanatee
@cynicalmanatee 2 жыл бұрын
agreed. The way i look at it, It is my job to ensure you, the DPS, have consistent up time and damage. If I am expected to do the same damage as you do, then why would i need DPS in my raid? In normal trials, tanks are a snooze fest as you can eat every mech and still make it out of the other side. Once in extreme, I have to start guiding the boss around and do some tank specific mechanics In savage, I have to also guide the boss so that the DPS can do their mechanics as well as damage uptime. I have to be pretty precise on my positioning In ultimate, I blink for two seconds, and the whole party wipes because of a boss mech All in all, I would say tanks have the biggest ramp up in skill expectation than any other role as you move through the content difficulty in this game.
@SoulReaperIsHere
@SoulReaperIsHere 2 жыл бұрын
I disagree that you set the pace of the dungeon (unless you're WAR). Your healer has to be able to keep up with the dmg output of big pulls. If your healer is bad you are unlikely to force a big pull. Conversely, a good healer can carry an otherwise mediocore or even poor team through big pulls. Especially WHM with their misery.
@zanido9073
@zanido9073 2 жыл бұрын
But it is most certainly more boring. With the removal of stance dancing tanks became way too simple. And you're not managing 2 rotations, mitigation abilities are like 4-5 buttons and you use them whenever you need them, there's no rotation involved except in ultimate.
@starofaetherius

I've leveled two tanks to 80 (haven't played since before Endwalker) and any advice I can give would be to just type in chat that you're new to the content. Also ask if big pulls are okay, you might have a new healer or a healer that hasn't played in a long time.... UNLESS you have a black mage and a samurai or two black mages or two samurais as the dps, then all bets are off and go full bore. the enemies will die before you know it. Happened to me and it was my top ten experiences in this game

in endwalker, most jobs can melt trash mobs now. especially Reaper, he'll do an ability to do more damage on all the mobs and just shreds through their HP like an hot knife through butter. Biggest misconception about tanking: you have to pull wall to wall. No. No you don't. If you are new, or even if you're a veteran who feels uncomfortable with certain pulls, just take it slow. Making 2-3 pulls per "wall" is still faster than pulling everything once, wiping and having to pull again.
@Moraalridder123
@Moraalridder123 2 жыл бұрын
Doesn't matter if you feel uncomfortable, it's the healer that has to keep you alive. And tanking is making a balance between a big pull and staying alive. You can at least try it, saves you and your team alot of time.

As a relatively new tank, I agree with this. Most groups, especially in lower level dungeons, are okay with slower pulls.
@DN-qd4dp
@DN-qd4dp 2 жыл бұрын
Starting with HW, dungeons are designed with 2-3 packs between each walls so you are pulling w2w anyway. Your advice still stands for some ARR dungeons that are not designed this way. If you pull one pack at a time, the healer is effectively useless.
@CiCiCrown9886
@CiCiCrown9886 2 жыл бұрын
@@Moraalridder123 Partially true. DPS need to be able to burn the groups down ASAP. Tanks needs to mitigate correctly and Healers need to be on the top of their game. Some w2w pulls in later content hit fairly hard. Basically, everyone has a role to play in w2w and if fails, it can be easy to identify what the issue is. (I.e., a tank pulling after a SGE uses their entire kit on a 3 group pull and refused to use their mitigates thus causing a wipe of the next group.) And there is a certain discomfort when it comes to Tanking. Especially when you are new to the role. W2W is never a standard either and it is a misconception to an extent. The tank should pull what they are comfy with and set the pace. If you don't like it, no one is stopping you from hitting the Leave Duty button. It's better to clear the content than repeatedly wipe.
@zanido9073
@zanido9073 2 жыл бұрын
With how easy dungeons are now you should never not be pulling wall to wall. And if you don't know how to survive a wall to wall then there's only one way to learn. Pulling single packs is a waste of everybody's time.

Regarding point #2 while it isn't likely to work for the most recent content since people are still learning it I've found that watching a guide video before each new dungeon/raid/trial is a huge help no matter the job but *especially* as a tank as it allows you to have at least some idea of what to do or not do during a run, reducing the stress of being in the conflicting positions of leading the party yet having no idea of what to do.
@DarkDyllon
@DarkDyllon 2 жыл бұрын
most of these things are taught through experience. if you reach lvl 51+ content, you should know most tells, especially now with the praetorium, castrum rework, where each fight SPECIFICALLY teached an mechanic. where the tank gets an tank marker a lot of the time, or stack markers appear, knockback markers, being mindful of the arena (Gaius for example summons clones on the outside) yet there are tanks in shadowbringers/endwalker content that somehow don't know what an stack marker is, or what cooldowns are. had to heal an tank doing w2w pulls with no cooldowns in the tower of zot dungeon (81 dungeon i believe) as an sage, it went ok for the most part till the final mob pack, they hit hard and the tank wasn't using ANY cooldowns ... an warrior on top of that. the tank then asked why i wasn't healing enough where i bursted out "how about you use 1 of your defensive CDs? you know you can basically solo these dungeons right? pop for example raw intuition and tada, 1 aoe and you're full" we wiped like 4 or 5 times to that pack before finally kicking that tank and getting a new 1 that properly popped his CDs. (that last pull is brutal even with proper CD management, but literally only that pull)
@philiplynx6991
@philiplynx6991 2 жыл бұрын
@@DarkDyllon Basic stuff like the various markers and use of cooldowns are things you can pick up via experience sure, I was more talking about dungeon/trial specific stuff where you either learn the hard way(which can inconvenience your party if you're the only one who doesn't know the mechanics and they have to raise you and explain it on the spot) or have someone do that first and learn from their experience via guide videos. I recently decided to solo farm for the firebird so I'll use Sophia extreme as an example. -If you don't know that at the phase change you need to book it first to the far right, then far left of the platform, you're going over the edge. -If you don't know that one of the heads she can summon has a powerful knockback and you need to position accordingly, you're probably going over the edge. -If you don't know that as soon as a blue meteor starts dropping you need to run to the side opposite, you're going over the edge. That is the sort of stuff I suggest watching guide vids for, if people need vids for basic stuff like markers and cooldowns they're either very new to the game/role or *really* haven't been paying attention.
@Poldovico
@Poldovico 2 жыл бұрын
@@philiplynx6991 That's extremes and up though. Unless you're specifically joining a blind prog group (which is a ton of fun if you can find one), people expect to go in with a strategy in higher difficulties. The usual "tanxiety" stories are from basic content which is absolutely designed to be yolo'd.
@TokyoTigger
@TokyoTigger Жыл бұрын
@@philiplynx6991 I agree- no matter my job, if I'm going into a new-to-me dungeon or raid (70+, although as dps and heals I'm way into endgame content now) for the first or second time, I like to watch a guide so I have a heads up about any new mechanics (or unique use of mechanics) that might kill me if I don't know them and do the wrong thing. Things like stackup markers, soak towers, tank busters etc are pretty obvious, but often they combine in different ways or the timing is specific, or if you miss one of them it doesn't hurt you right away but will wipe you on an upcoming mechanic (like the soak towers in I think P10). Standing on the gravity well lines on Althyk in Euphrosyne is one example of something I wouldn't have known until getting caught in that attack a couple of times unless I watched the guide. After gaining more experience there's a lot more content I could probably jump into as dps or heals and figure out after 2 or 3 attempts but it seems silly not to learn from others when they offer their own experience as a guide. I only just started tanking this past week and all my tanks are still lowbies, but you better bet I'll be rewatching guides as I get to higher level content even if I've done them many times just to inform myself of tank-specific considerations. I feel that's even more important for being a considerate player when it's not new game content because the majority of other players queuing up are not going to be first-timers and probably know the fight decently well.
@Akinon93
@Akinon93 2 жыл бұрын
Recently started tanking savage (as a GNB no less), and I've learned it's much more difficult to do as tank than DPS (imo anyways), but in a different way. DPS has more intricate rotations, buffs, resources, etc to manage, but tanks have more mechanics to manage in a given fight. From my experience anyways, I deal with all the same mechanics a DPS will, but also have tank-centric mechanics (purgation/grace for example). Not to mention things like boss positioning, CD usage, and more. A good or bad DPS doesn't affect the tank, but if you have a bad tank who's unreliable with say boss positioning, suddenly DPS have to modify their own positioning/rotation even. Think Pinax for example, if a tank can't get boss to the wall reliably, your melee can straight up not be able to DPS boss if you get lightning charge first. And also, in order to move him you literally have to run out of melee range to do it. Ranged attacks help but can still stop your rotation entirely, whereas a DPS can follow the boss as he moves and keep uptime. That's all to say, DPS and Tanks each have their own difficulties, some more than others, but overall I feel tanking and dealing with the nuances of tanking while also keeping as optimal DPS as you can, can be a bit more difficult. But also just my opinion. Though I think healing's the hardest personally 😅
@zeerodown1887
@zeerodown1887 2 жыл бұрын
….or you can be a giga chad and run through the boss, hit one last gcd before running out of melee range, go to the wall (the gcd timer is rolling), gap closer back to him, keep your rotation with full uptime while your position has been snapshotted. (P4s, Phase 1 - Pinax) It’s a bit tight and sometimes if you moved a 0.5 secs too early or to late the boss will stop moving right in the middle but so far it worked fine with PLD and WAR. GNB and DRK have their Burst so it can be tedious if it happens you have to move the boss.

Healings the hardest for sure because you have to deal with the consequences of both bad tanks and bad dps more than any other role. You have to spend more time healing their dumb asses, and will sometimes get blamed by the party if someone dies because the DPS stands in AoE or the tank isnt using Mits. The worst possible scenario is if they are up their own ass about boss dps because they will get mad at you for spending more time saving their ass than killing the boss. Luckily like 90% of the playerbase is not this way.

I used to be a tank main when Shadowbringers came out. And at this point I haven't played for quite a few months (maybe even years). So now I really don't know if I should play a tank again, because I remember a lot of groups at "higher" level (50+) dungeons (and we're talking about MSQ dungeons here) are quite toxic when you die - yes, even in FF XIV. Everyone's nice until you mess up. But there will be dungeons and bosses that I don't remember (or simply don't know as I haven't started Endwalker yet). So chances are I'll eventually cause a party wipe. So I wouldn't call the 2nd Misconception a "Misconception", because you do have to lead your party & make sure that no one dies. As much as I'd love to tank again, I honestly don't know if I would give it another shot anytime soon.

Ur honestly giving the dungeons waaaay too much credit. There are like 2 or 3 dungeons in the entire game that I think would give new and seasoned people something to fight for but other than that you seriously shouldnt have any problems. If youre very nervous about messing up, I hope u have a leveled up WAR as its easily the easiest to keep alive. Either way, all tanks are great and its very easy. (coming from a tank main that thinks dungeons are way too easy and boring) Toxicity wise, its very rare in dungeons imo, people usually dont care. The worst and most common are inept people, not new people but actually people who purposely make the dungeon harder(healer bots, no aoe dps).

@@vincentbeton for sure, i remember when i was doing an 1-50 MSQ speedrun that i did the hall of novice for tanks since that was optimal and i laughed at the final mission. where adds appear and the game legit tells you to ignore them and let the DPS handle them. i just hope that in the near future, SE will finally revamp them, make them accurate, hell for story skippers make them mandatory to be completed. put all the basic tank things in there, like stack, tank and knockback markers. let tanks deal in that tutorial with lethal tank buster damage without CDs, so that the newer tanks feel that they need to use an CD instead of surviving it with 20% HP because the healer popped everything. they aim so much at the casual player that they completely overlook the essentials.

the 2nd misconception is right and wrong. you don't need to know each boss, sure that's true. but you NEED to know each tell for a mechanic (for example stack marker, tank marker, knockback etc) also the w2w pulls is nowadays just an standard 2 mob pack pull, also seeing you do an glaring mistake with that wall 2 wall pull in the twinning, you just stand in the middle while AOE'n, you didn't group them so people who need to target an enemy to still easily all mobs. also yes, i'm leveling Sage and early dungeons it's either an hell or an absolute breeze, not even based on the tank most of the time. Sage doesn't have an insta AOE heal at lower levels, and then the DPS go and stand with the tank while taking tons of damage from cleaving mobs. (really, circle AOE's is a bad thing, good for tanks in most cases, but fuck do they suck for DPS/healers) the 3rd misconception is something that drives me mad from both tanks and healers. when a tank only spams 1-2-3, barely any OGCDs, sometimes an defensive CD and that's it, no extra effort. from healers who only do heals but no damage and then go "but i'm healing!" ... so? your party is mostly at 60-90% HP, you can easily keep doing damage. I don't know, a lot of these mis conceptions except the 1st 1 being "tanking is boring" (which i get, let's be real here, tanking isn't that complicated anymore, raid fights are designed around 1 main tank and an off tank, where the off tank only takes agro for an short time before switching back) where the off tank barely has anything to do anymore, compared to stormblood where the OT's job was to keep the MT's emnity in check, since back then EVERYONE had to check their emnity generation, with every dps job having an emnity reduction skill and lucid dreaming reducing emnity by 50%, where the OT's job was to make sure he would get a lot of emnity along the MT and then pass it on to the MT, was a fun thing to do, know when the boss might do an cheeky cast, quickly provoke+shirk in that cast bar.

@zedorian6547
@zedorian6547 2 жыл бұрын
The stance dancing thing was a problem because if you wanted to do anything higher than normal you would find a lot of groups that more or less forced you to tank in the "dps" stance just to squeeze out that tiny bit more damage, even though you as a tank might not be able to keep the Black Mage from completely ripping away your enmity and then the whole party gets pissy with you for not holding that enmity and not once taking into account that you as the tank are only i205 while that Black Mage is i225 with pentameld but thats also your fault for not raiding as much as the Black Mage and bursting through the content at breakneck speed like they did while also not having a friend or paying some random crafter whatever they charge. Yes, it was interesting, but it allowed for a hell of a lot of bullying. It also didn't help that Dark Knight was the only tank that really didn't get affected by the damage penalty that your tank stance would give. People will claim WAR was the same but that only applied if you were able to play WAR to that level, and also leveled up all the other classes needed to get the cross-class skills........regardless of my long post however, I would like to see some type of content where you would get access to that type of system again, especially since a lot of the clunk from that era is no longer a part of the game.

Best parts of being a tank Fast queue times only barely slower than healer Tank privilege. Oh theres a meteor marker? I can just sort of, not do that and keep uptime (assuming ofc youre not MT and need to bring the boss to where the group is, Rhalgr is a good example of this where his position is fixed and everyone has to run away) Bad parts of being a tank Oblation Before I played 14 I played WoW for a little bit (nothing serious, only got to level 40 on my mage and like 30 on my paladin) but as a tank I was expected to lead the party and know the path. WoW dungeons are not linear, I had to google dungeon guides to know what path I'm supposed to take and THANK GOD thats not a thing in 14. At most some tanks do the side rooms in haukkes or stone vigil and those detours are only like 20 seconds tops as opposed to being lost in this giant ass maze of a cave with no idea where to go

It's fine. There are almost no curveballs with the tanking role as you push through the dungeons. Any twists you may come across tend to be obvious, and your healer is there to bail you out of any that aren't. Trials and raids, at least the early versions of them, likewise aren't terribly complicated, but you may want to read up on them. Those curveball mechanics can become dangerous to anyone regardless of role. In most of those cases, you won't be the only tank, so as a first timer, you get to sit back and take back-up duty.

I was recently running Milikah Wells while leveling my GNB to 90. My PLD, WAR, and DRK are already there. My team consisted of a SCH, and 2 BLM. First pull, no problem. 2nd pull....took for ever. And I could not get past the sound of Physic being spammed on me. It was so bad that I had to say something to the healer. Of course he did not like my criticism, and stated ".... you're not dying, are you?" Yeah, I had to quit. I was not going to spend 45 minutes on a leveling dungeon.

I agree with everything, though preparing yourself before each new dungeon/raid is surely useful :3 Watching a guide beforehand never hurts. And besides, it is ok when you experience moments like wiping 6 times at Eyes of the Creator. It can happen. It will not devalue you as a tank. Though I wouldn't recommend people with anxiety and low self esteem to start with tanking. It can get quite personal to the point that it can give you severe tank anxiety.

You do need to know the boss before you tank or you can end up wiping the party . The tank job is not to be taken lightly dps the boss dps is the easiest class to learn mechs, then tank, if you are a healer by nature do the same dps will show what they have to deal with and then tanks this way you can heal accordingly but I also advise tanks to do heal jobs every once in a while this way you can get a feel for what each healer is capable of, and you can pull accordingly.
