In regard to Gru's disclaimer about the fictional nature of his storybook, if you watch enough movies eventually you will see the same thing in the credits. It usually reads something like " this is a work of fiction. Any resemblance to persons, living or dead, is purely coincidental."

One of the things I like about this movie is that the Minions are half competent at best, and any other movie would have the main character snap under pressure at their antics constantly screwing things up during the climax where he's so under pressure to succeed. Not here, though. Gru gets annoyed, and corrects his minions when they mess up, but he NEVER snaps at them or shouts. Not even when he's facing ruin. Not even at his lowest point. He just sadly tells them what's going down and that they should maybe find other employment and how much he appreciates and cares about them. Like many villains, his minions are all identical except for four variants... but unlike many villains he not only considers them and knows EVERY ONE of them by name and can tell which one he's looking at with no problem. That tells you a lot about Gru without any exposition. It is SO perfectly done. He's a jerk, but he has a heart of gold. He's a villain but he's a villain that has loved ones. He, Dr. Nefario, and the Minions are not just working together, they're a family. He loves them, and they love him. It's why he slid straight into fatherhood for the girls to the point he had to keep them. He was already halfway there at the start.

28:55 Astronomy teacher here! Rockets drop lower portions (called "stages") once that portion of the rocket runs out of fuel; the upper stages still have fuel, but if you shed to empty useless metal hulls below them that you don't need, you get rid of a LOT of dead weight. As a result, the rocket becomes lighter and lighter, needing less powerful engines and lower fuel consumption. You use the giant stages with the huge engines to get off of Earth, and the lighter smaller engines to make the delicate course correction and circularization burns to stay in orbit and reach specific targets in space thousands of miles away. In short, they drop those stages like that because its efficient to shuck dead weight.

28:57 Booster rockets are detached from the main module after the fuel is spent to reduce weight.
@SeedFactoryProjectАй бұрын
The energy to reach Earth orbit is about twice the energy in the best rocket fuel. So a simple way to think about it is the first stage (booster) gets you about halfway to orbit, and the second finishes the job. The details are more complicated, but that is a rough idea of why most rockets use two stages. (Yes, I'm a rocket scientist 🙃).

One of my personal favourite movie trope is the "hero against their will" people. The guys who start out on the wrong end of the law, but then begrudgingly, almost against their will, will do the right thing when it really COUNTS. See Han Solo in Star Wars - that's the kind. Gru is such a lovely, wholesome example. Big bad guy gets a bunch of adorable kids to use them in a scheme, but then, actually, becomes emotionally attached to them and turns nice. Awww. :)

28:56 Once the fuel tank is empty, it's just dead weight. Giving rockets multiple stages they can shed in flight means the later stages have less mass to accelerate. Rocket engine nozzles also work best at one particular air pressure; muti-staging lets you step through different nozzles that are tailored to different altitudes. Movies like this, though, mostly just do rocket staging because *everyone* remembers seeing the Saturn V do it during the Apollo programme, or has seen it in movies about Apollo, and it looks really epic!

They used Vector as the villain because a vector is a quantity having direction and magnitude, especially to determine the position of one point in space relative to another (Examples are displacement, velocity, acceleration, force, etc; which indicate the direction of the quantity and its magnitude). That’s why he shrank the Great Pyramid of Giza, and the whole plot revolves around them trying to steal the moon. Those are just some objects that can be located using vectors.

24:39 The 'terrible parent, great grandparent' trope. I think there's been a few cases of that happening in real life - ok in the case I heard it wasn't so much terrible parent more.....well there was tension and the parent preferred to go to the bar rather than stay and deal with problems, but talking over what happened to them as children with their children helped a lot and their relationship got better with time.

@JuryRigged Жыл бұрын
I love Despicable Me and Megamind. Megamind always carries a caveat that I don't like that Megamind's previous crimes get completely ignored by the end (it's a fantastic, fun movie, but he had dozens of life sentences, his shenanigans probably killed many, no guess as to an amount of property damage, and he should, ultimately, be *responsible* for Tighten's actions). Despicable Me is so much more wholesome. While Gru never has to come to terms with his actions before and during the movie, there's a lot more character development for him, and at least in the larger scale, the world is presented in a much more 'toonish' fashion. Freezing someone in a block of ice isn't a death sentence, for instance.

I like movies/shows with villain protagonists. Infinity War was one with Thanos getting most screen time & it being about his quest. I hope Doctor Doom gets a “Books of Doom” origin series when he’s introduced in the MCU. Some other ones I’d recommend are: - Joker (2019): One of the better DC films about mental health with questions about which parts are real or in his head. - Barry: A HBO series about a hitman who wants to become an actor & makes conflicting decisions. It’s SO unique. It’s like a dark, action dramedy. I was in tears from laughter several times but it also deals with serious tones. - Breaking Bad: I know you said you couldn’t get into this show because of Walter, but I’ve been having a blast with it. The majority of the characters have flaws but that makes it realistic. There are still some worth rooting for.
