My son was 2.5 years old when the Disney Channel started promoting the Cars trailer. Every single time they showed it, my son would beg me to see it. He didn’t understand time and I would try to tell him that it was 4 months away. He would look at me and ask, how many days is that? 🙄 So finally the day came for the opening of Cars! The actor who did the voice of Mack, John Ratzenburger, had provided a voice in just about every Pixar feature film at this point. They made light of that during the closing credits, when they showed clips of "car" versions of Pixar films at the Radiator Springs drive-in movie. After the last one, Mack said, "Hey wait a minute! All they're doing is using the same actor. What kind of a cut rate production is this?" Nice that Ratzenburger is able to laugh at himself.

I'm a gearhead, a racefan , and I love to drive. In addition to the typical Pixar awesomeness, it made massive nods to US car culture. One of the really amazing things with this movie is the number of real people that are legendary in the car and racing community. Strip Weathers was voiced by 7 time NASCAR champion driver Richard Petty, known to his many fans as The King. His wife, Lynda voiced, well, his wife. Mario Andretti, another racing legend, did a voice cameo as himself, Junior, was voiced by Dale Earnhardt Jr., the son of another NASCAR legend and a driver himself. The Ferrari at the end was voiced by 7 time Formula One champion Michael Shumacher. Paul Newman, in addition to being a renowned actor was also an accomplished racing driver. The two Rust-eze owners were voiced by Tom and Ray Magliozzi. They were a couple of brothers known for their radio talk show Car Talk which aired on NPR between 1977 and 2012. The show discussed car repair, and their on air personas were Click and Clack, the Tappet Brothers. This movie is a total geekout for motor buffs! So in other words, yeah I really love this movie!

John's wife Nancy told him that she would support him doing this film but on the condition that he has to take normal working hours and warned him that he might miss out on their kids (consisting of five sons) growing up, so after TS2 was wrapped up, his family traveled through Route 66, which inspired him to do Cars.

One great thing about Pixar is that they are willing to cast non-actors if the voice is right. Case in point, Lassiter hired Michael Walace for his expertise on Route 66 (the primary animators and directors were taken on a road trip by Wallis). They liked his voice so much they created the character of the Sheriff, and he provided the voice. The King was played by Richard Petty - and if anyone was the King of NASCAR racing, he was it!

Toys, fish, cars, grumpy old men, superheroes, rats, robots, it didn't matter - they knew how to prioritize a compelling story even while pushing CGI to new levels of sophistication. The success of this film owes itself to so many resources. From the amazing work of PIXAR, to the simple story allowing real character building, and a history of NASCAR to build from to make many Easter egg references. At the end when The King is wrecked, that scene was copied from the real one Richard Petty experienced and is my favorite nod to the source material. I bought and sent a copy of this to my Step-Dad on Father's Day shortly after released: He is a fan and brought me up to speed on the sport, and it's many points of history so I could better understand what I was looking at beyond 'roundy-round'. He very much enjoyed it.

PIXAR regularly takes production leads (storyboard artists, layout artists, animators, etc) on trips in preparation for each film - while Cars was originally going to go in a different direction, their Route 66 road trip turned the movie into a love letter for The Mother Road. Many of the details throughout the film - particularly in Radiator Springs - were inspired by real-life attractions and novelties along Route 66: ~ Radiator Springs in general - Main Street in Galena, KS ~ Radiator Springs rock formation - Tucumcari Mountain on the outskirts of Tucumcari, NM (sans radiator cap, obviously) ~ Luigi's Leaning Tower of Tires - The Leaning Tower of Texas; a lopsided water tower in Groom, TX, alongside Route 66 ~ The Cozy Cone - Wigwam Motel #6 in Holbrook, AZ; a motel/campground where the cabins look like giant Indian teepees ~ Lizzie's souvenir shop - Sandhills Curiosity Shop in Erick, OK ~ Ramone's Body Shop - Tower Station/U-Drop Inn in Shamrock, TX ~ Flo's V-8 Cafe - Fran Houser's Midpoint Cafe in Adrian, TX; 1139 miles from both Chicago and LA ~ Filmore's Organic Fuels - Ortega's Indian Market in Lupton, AZ ~ Sarge's Surplus Hut - numerous surplus quonset huts surrounding Barstow, CA ~ "Yes! We're open!" signs - the Jackrabbit Trading Post outside Joseph City, AZ has tons of similar signs announcing the store ~ The Cadillac Range - The Cadillac Ranch outside Amarillo, TX; a Cadillac enthusiast bought a new car each time Cadillac changed the tailfins and buried the old car nose-first in a row with the previous models ~ The glorious canyon waterfall - Havasu Falls, Havasupai Reservation near Supai, AZ ~ Wheel Well Motel - blend of the Wagon Wheel Motel in Cuba, MO and Chief Yellowhorse's Trading Post on the AZ/NM border along US-66/I-40 Even most of the voices in the movie come from their portrayed sources. The Sheriff of Radiator Springs is voiced by Michael Wallis, who has written numerous books about Route 66 and served as PIXAR's creative consultant for Cars. Other notables include: ~ Strip "The King" Weathers - Kyle Petty, legendary NASCAR driver ~ Junior - Dale Earnhardt Jr, NASCAR driver ~ Announcers Bob Cutlass and Darrell Cartrip - NASCAR announcers Bob Costas and Darrell Waltrip ~ Rusty & Dusty Rust-Eze - Tom & Ray Magliozzi, hosts of Car Talk on NPR radio ~ Mario Andretti and Michael Schumacher - themselves, Formula 1 drivers Secret Easter Egg: "McQueen's Biggest Fan" from the opening was voiced by Douglas Keever. Keever was a dyed-in-the-wool vegan and old-school hippie, whose VW Bus served as the inspiration for Filmore. (Filmore ended up being voiced by George Carlin, as PIXAR was already contracted with McDonalds for Happy Meal toys and Keever didn't want to be associated with meat.) Keever's nickname was "Mater" and he introduced himself as "Like tuh-mater, but without the tuh."

I think the Cars franchise is pretty great. People often overlook it as 'cringy kids movie about talking cars', but I actually found myself enjoying the movie more as I got older. When instead of just watching the movie and then moving on i'd actually think about the characters, their actions and motivations and so much more. I'd really like for you to watch the other two. Cars 3 especially is a movie that has a grip on my emotions.

This is one of my favorite movies ever. Not just cartoons, MOVIES movies. I truly love it even now at the age of 36 i'd pop it on the TV and watch it with the same interest my 5-yo niece does.

A couple of adult jokes in this movie, the twins at the beginning flashing McQueen and that truck stop is called the "top down". Never noticed that as a kid 🤣🤣🤣

Im from Albuquerque NM and the route 66 runs through my State, and this movie honestly really hits me because the small towns I know and took for granted when i was young... Are now very much like Radiator Springs. Towns bypassed to save time driving for the big Highways. But the small towns have people and families who have been around since BEFORE New Mexico was even a State, even longer before when the US was a proper country! So much history that i love is reflected in this movie, and how quick industrialization can be a bad thing in the name of the "greater good".

I’ve been watching this movie since I was 4-5 years old when it first came out in 06. I’ve seen all 3 movies and this Pixar Series in particular is near and dear to my heart bc my Cars fandom was huge in those early years of my life. Loved your reaction and hope you see the other 2 movies as well.

I like Sally's explanation of what happen to Radiator Springs. Unfortunately, with the build of the interstate highway system, things like what happened to Radiator Springs really has happened to so many small towns across the U.S. I also love to just go out for a drive every so often and not have a destination but just go out and see where the road takes you. I love what Sally said "Cars didn't drive to make great time, they drove to have a great time". The "Old Route 66" road is also known at the "Mother Road" because it was the first cross country road that was ever built here in the U.S. (back before the Interstate highway system) that linked the Eastern U.S. to the Western U.S. the Road started in Chicago, Illinois and Ended in Los Angeles, California

There are very few movies I can watch over and over and just love every time. Funny enough two of them are Disney Kid oriented films. This one and George of the Jungle were films two of my kids loved and we watched them to death. I still remember every line with fondness. Amazing work by everyone.

John Lass-it-ter, emphasis on Lass. I believe he was the head honcho at Pixar and guided a lot of the early films to production. He has said he is a car guy and has pushed car toons probably beyond what audience wants (second one didn't do good). I liked this movie. It was fun.

There were many towns like Radiator Springs which turned into ghost towns when the freeways came through. The major reason for them was national security. If equipment or personnel needed to travel cross country in a national emergency they needed to make it in as quick a time as possible. In 1919 President Eisenhower (while he was a brevet lieutenant colonel was part of a miliary exercise called the Motor Transport Convoy. It took 62 days to travel 3200 miles (5100 km).
