Destiny 2's main enemy, Ghaul, took over the Cabal Empire in an event known as the Midnight Coup! The previous Emperor, Calus was overthrown by Ghaul and the Consul and Ghaul was proclaimed as the first Dominus of the Cabal Empire! This was the midnight coup.

Wow. This one hit right in the feels. As a huge fan of the Destiny Universe this channel has quickly become one of my faves. Then today I check out the latest video to hear Byf pointing to a great clan's latest cause. My wife has CF. we have been together for almost 8 years, and it has always been on the back of my mind. She is strong, and has faced that disease every day of her life all while kicking ass and taking names! That being said I hate the thought that I will probably out live her. It kills me. Thank you Byf, and most importantly, thank you Dads of Destiny for looking out for a disease that many people don't even know exist. It really means more to me than words could ever express. Makram Alssaad I haven't looked too much into it other from these videos, but that seems to be the idea. That calus, in this raid, is basically testing us to use us for his vengeance against the traitors who survived the assassinations and to take back his empire. Probably on the promise that the cabal will help the guardians fight the darkness or some shit. Think of the leviathan as the Crota's end to whatever calus wants us for's Kings Fall.

George Smith Seems like the remaining Skyburners died during the siege of the Dreadnaught after the fall of their Primus and the Shield Brothers.

I don’t think they went home. All of them failed their missions, we killed their commanders, and most were wiped out by Oryx’s attack. They are ether a scattered few left in Sol or they’re dead.

The Skyburners' Oath lore tab states that some Skyburners survived and apparently suceeded in their mission to aqcuire methods of preventing Guardian resurrection.

To me Ghaul was a complex character. Someone who had conquered worlds, destroyed suns and ended the lives of billions. But in his heart there must have been an emptiness once he took the title Dominus. He had all the power possible, but he still felt lost. He wanted a higher purpose. His people had abandoned him, made him a gladiator. What did he owe them? All his victories must have seemed hollow. When he learned of the Traveller and the Guardians, he must have wanted to sweep us away to get to the Traveller, not to be empowered, but to be acknowledged. To be worthy of the favor of a God. The Traveller's silence must have frightened him to no end, especially after one Guardian retrieved their Light. What made these weaker beings worthy? In the end, I'm glad the Traveller saw Ghaul, even if it was only as a threat. He was someone who was lost, wanting a true meaning and purpose. And he had found it, inadvertently, when he forced the Traveller to awaken.

There are plenty of rumors suggesting that we may have a fallen alliance which I personally want. I mean, wouldn't it be something to have an alliance with the fallen and fight against a common enemy? As suggested in the story missions in Destiny 2, the Fallen and us are both fighting for our home, as seeing that our solar system as apparently become the Fallens home as well. One mission on Titan was called "Enemy of my Enemy" which is referring to how the Fallen are the enemy of the Hive which is also our enemy and we are fighting for the same goal. You have the options to kill a captain, a knight or both at the end of the mission. If you kill the captain and leave the night, the hive night will do what any other add will do and just try to kill you. If you kill the knight and leave the captain, the Fallen captain will actually give you a war salute, give you the Ether which the Fallen needs to survive, and then leave in peace.

There's a scannable object on Nessus, in The Tangle, a vex light pillar that I ran into last night on my exo hunter that ghost says something like "this pillar is reacting to your body exo, are the vex and eco connected?" Are their specific scannable's based on race now? If so, might add more questions and lore for you Byf.

Due to this lore would it be too much of a long shot to say that Ghaul , Consul, and the others did in fact kill Calus during the Midnight Coup but decided that since the populous would most likely be unpleased by the news they instead created a robotic look alike of Calus along with his memories and then sent him off on the Leviathan. Or did they send him off on the Leviathan and then Calus, in order to ensure that his vengeance would be dealt, created robotic versions of himself along with his memories in case of his untimely demise and thus that is why we are constantly being invited back to the Leviathan because his memories end shortly after Ghaul’s defeat. Just some theories.

I want a much more personality raid this go round. I’m hoping that someone that uses the darkness as a power source decides that the best way to kill guardians is with guardians. And uses the darkness to resurrect Dredgen Yor. Yor obviously was one of the coolest flavor texts in all of Destiny 1. I think it would be BADASS if we actually got to fight him and he has multiple *Darkness* versions of all the hunter subclasses. Just thinking about it scares the hell out of me. YOR RAID , we need it!

Could Calus be a giant Psion? I thought Psions were the ones who had telekinetic and psionic powers however, Calus boast his powers around. Could he have learned these abilities from Psions? If so, how come other cabal havent learn them yet? If Guardians beat Calus with the Traveler's can it be safe to assume that Ghaul would've beaten Calus since Ghaul had the Travelers light(granted he didnt know what he was doing but still)? Could we have made peace with Calus? When he first walked in he literally offers us a drink. I suppose he wants to thank us for putting on a good for him in his leviathan and to thank us for killing Ghaul for him. Canonically, I just assume we are stopping from eating Nessus and he angry at us for smack his cup out of his hand. Could we have talked him down? Thats alot of questions I dont expect Byf to see but perhaps someone could fill me on those questions.

James Elzie The Calus in the raid is a robot of Calus and he uses them to test the guardians. We can assume from the flavor text of the prestige raid gear that we end up serving Calus

One thing. That was not calus . In the raid we did not beat callus we only went through the Leviathan in his invitation to go through for great rewards . Callus did not attack us he was thanking us and is trying to recruit us because calus has recruits from many many races accros the universe . But usually he threatens those races into joining him. You should watch more of byfs vids

Thanks for responses guys. I did watch alot of Byfs videos, but I guess I missed out on some info. I did figure that wasnt Calus, but Im just confused on interactions with us, the Guardians. Was he TRULY hostile towards us? Yes, forces other alien races to ally with him, but was he met with the same resistance from other races as the Guardians? When he offered us a drink, he seems(to me at least), genuinely hospitable. He could be just full if himself and just boasting his power and wealth. But idk he just seems like wanted to congradulate us. Calus seems to act like a stereotypical king/emperor who wants to be loved by the peoplr but at the same time feared. Perhaps in Calus' mind he was gonna try and make "an alliance" with Guardian, but I was just humoring the possibility of if we could talk him down since he didnt really attack us in the same sense Ghaul did.

James Elzie the raid is a giant test for us. Yes Calus can be quite hospitable, but he does threaten to destroy Nessus if we fail his tests. Great incentive to not fail! You see, in the boss fight we are actually fighting a robotic 'puppet' of Calus, therefore we do not actually kill him, and we pass his tests.

James Elzie If you didn't look into it, the raid was a test to see if you were worthy of joining Calus's empire. That's why you don't kill Calus, just his robot, because the whole raid was a test to see if you were worthy. We were also the first race to EVER kill robotic Calus. We are the first race that will see Calus's true body. It is cited in the raid gear that the all they have to do is make it to the throne room. But it was harder for us.

Hey Byf, are you going to address the reasons for Ghaul choking the Consul to death before we fight him? The lore kinda suggests that Ghaul actually might've been content with serving as Primus of the Red Legion, had his ambition not taken him so far. In the lore for the Midnight Coup, I seem to recall Calus stating that Ghaul couldn't even look him in the eye while he took over.

What I have the most questions about in Destiny 2, what's the deal with The Pyramidion? Did it swap the Radiolarian Lake out and give it to the Inverted Spire? Or did Brakion alter reality (again) to remove the lake from The Pyramidion we enter on Io? Cause, Asher clearly saw a lake, and the only lake we find related to the Vex is the final stage of The Protheon fight on Nessus. Idk, just a thought y'know?

So Gaul abolished the position of Emperor, yet the Console stated that, once Gaul took possession of the Light, that Gaul would be called Emperor. Does this indicate that there had already been a growing schism between Gaul and the Console? Or merely that Gaul might not have wanted to be defined or associated with the previous regime which he believed was an utter failure?

mand0rk The leviathan was set course into unknown space by the Midnight Coup. Calus or any of his loyalists could not control the ship. I think this is because it was controlled by a navigation panel which is referred to in several lore tabs.

Breakfast Bane So it couldn't be controlled by anyone? We're missing a huge timeframe here. Somehow Calus got off of the leviathan, presumably got back to his empire, and then he pointed the Leviathan at Nessus.

Not going to draw comparisons between Ahmun Arath and Xivu Arath? I keep feeling that the whole Leviathan raid and maybe the whole of the Cabal Empire are puppets in the Darkness grand scheme. There is also the strange chitin like piles all over the ship. Could the Leviathan be a captured Hive Wyrm?
