I am glad they showed that even though Zavala “forgave” himself in the Season of the Haunted, that it didn’t magically heal lifetimes worth of pain and grief completely. Seeing him genuinely considering the offer, even if for a moment, had me like “no no I get it.”

YES!! I heard Paul Tassi complaining that it seemed dumb to him because Zavala “dealt with” the grief during season of the Haunted, but that’s just not how grief works, especially when you blame yourself for your loss. Grief is not linear. This story was so well-done. Targe’s line of “I loved them too” got me to choke up because of course he loved Zavala’s family, but it meant so much to hear him say it. Their bond was so special. Targe made me feel more from his death in that one moment than Rohan ever did.

I liked how in the credits, Zavala went back to the old homestead and buried Targe and set a grave alongside Hakim’s. Showed he had a place of importance to Zavala on the level of his son and I think Targe would appreciate the sentiment if he could.

Well the stigma and the thing in ron are both shaped like the staffs tthe precursors held that are portrayed in the Vow symbols and other in game drawings of the witness, on top of that symbol being everywhere inside of the pyramids

It's really interesting to me how the Witness was similar to Thanos in that It wasn't really evil like twirling it's mustache and saying muahahaha, it truly believed the final shape was truly the best outcome and simply couldn't grip the idea of life without meaning (answers from the Traveller)

The Witness is one to talk. He caused the Whirlwind and through Nezarec, the Eliksni were turned away from the Light. This caused the Eliksni to become hostile towards Humanity resulting in the death of Hakim.

@@Landis963 I don't remember this lore so sorry if i get something wrong, but when they took Nezarec's body parts and wore it as a symbol of power, the body parts started speaking to them and telling them to do more and more horrible stuff, the temptation may have been from Nezarec himself, instead of the Witness, cause Nezarec wants to cause pain, and he could even talk to us right after he died in the raid.

Idk if anyone realized that during the cutscene when Zavala was talking to the statue of Safi, she wasn’t really smiling, just kinda poker faced looking at Zavala,but at the end, when he looks at her one last time and leaves, you see her have a big ass smile, like if she was genuinely happy he forgave himself and found his place in the world.

Imagine how much more of a distraction it would have been to have just given Zavala his desires instead of trying to entice him with the promise of it. Means The Witness probably couldn’t fulfill that promise if it wanted to.

The Witness has a long, stories history of lying to get what it wants, lies to the krill, lied to the eliksni. It makes lies and false promises all the time, so im not surprised that it tried to promise aomething that it couldnt immediately make happen.

I hope Byf does a video focusing on how the Final Shape has changed everyone’s roles for the future going forward. People like Nimbus, and side characters like Osiris. But especially the Vanguad: Zavala, Ikora, and now Crow. Zavala specifically, may have to consider stepping down from military operations beyond Earth, as he can no longer be revived. He may most likely ease into retirement, working on defending the City walls, Earth, and going to Consensus/Colation meetings. But someone else, like Titan-Deputy Sloan, may have to do the military operations on the field that Zavala no longer can. He still has a purpose-a role to play among the Coalition and Guardians, but he’s still too important to lose on the battlefield.

He rarely sees frontline action. Red War due to Ghaul overtaking the city and TFS due to being the literal end of the universe are the exceptions. As we've seen, much like Eris and Osiris, he's now using darkness power to allow himself to keep fighting should he need to. But, as the de facto head of state in The Last City, he has other fish to fry.

Wasn`t the point of Caiatls and Zavalas side mission, that he should never step back from the frontline for losing his light. He can still fight and therefore should. Caiatl and Mithrax fight on the frontline too and they have no paracausal abilitys. Edit: Okay, I watched the mission again and the message is, that Zavala shouldn`t retreat for his failures and should stand upwards. They still make clear, that Zavala will stay as the commander and will also go to the battlefield, if needed. Zavala: "I`m not afraid of the battlefield because I`m lightless. I`m not afraid to die."

What would they become; Dredgen Yor's successor? The Second Taken King? The Shadow of Earth? The Final Disciple? Something else? Only the Witness and the Guardian would know.

The witnesd has rather odd standards for discipleship. It seems less based around one's ability to kill and more based around one's capacity for ambition and perfection. Clovis and Mara were offered discipleship but none of the Hive Gods were. Oryx was probably the closest thing to being a hive disciple as Xivu is fragile emotionally and Savathûn wanted out of the whole deal.

We don't know about Nezarc but we know that Rhulk and Calus were betrayed, by their own family no less. Eramis felt betrayed by the "great machine" just as how the precursors were (Beyond Light does feel like it was a tryout. Whoever won would be elevated to being a disciple). Hell, the Witness tried to make us turn against the Traveler by bringing up events where it sat and did nothing while its "chosen" were being slaughtered. Which is probably why it tried to tempt Zavala the most. Zavala's faith in the Traveler had already been called into question several times.

Targe dying was difficult to see, one more blow to Zavala psyche and he still found the answer to help us hurt the witness, even with Ikora and Crow dismissing his idea as suffering and weakness... For me he is the best character in Destiny by far, Cayde is funny, Ikora is powerful, Shaxx and Saladin saw the colapse and the War Lords era, but Zavala lost so much and continued to always strive for humanity even when he had nothing but doubts about the Traveler...

I was shocked to discover, it’s not Ikora, Osiris, or some other Warlock that receives visons from the Traveler (that we know of) but a Hunter. Micah-10. Of all the classes, you’d think a Warlock would have the strongest connection to be able to commune with the Traveler. I wonder how Ikora and other Warlocks feel about this? Still, Micha can’t be the only one that can interact with the Pale Heart so vividly.

I wonder if Zavala recognized that the Witness was lying. It would not be able to give him what he wanted. If the witness brought back his wife and child "perfect" they would resent him for it. So that being said, I had never heard the clip of Zavala begging his ghost to bring back his dead son before. That really tore me up inside. I personally think bungie really missed an opportunity to really put a twist on this story but making someone fall into the temptation of the Witness and be someone we have to fight and eventually defeat. Imagine the story arch we could’ve had by Zavala being twisted to the witnesses will and being forced to fight us, or even Ikora…. OR WORST YET CAYDE! The witness created him to trick us inside the traveller. Good dlc but feel like we could’ve done alot more with the story….

This is part of the campaign and lore that a lot people give the final shape an “L” just because “Oh we already done this story in season of Haunted, oh Zavala is a brick wall in this game”. But people don’t understand how tragic this is imagine being bless to a silent god with no answers, and beg forgiveness for falling love ones for generations only for the first knife tempting you to bring your family back. Scars don’t heal that easily. I’m mean I have you not listen how way out of line Zavala was in that strike mission with Ikora.

I just replayed Zavala's mission. On second thought, I think bringing his regrets towards Zafiya was a mistake. We already went over this back in Season of the Haunted. She left you and formed another family centuries ago, get over it. The story should have been focused on Hakim this time instead.

I hated Ikora coming in saying "It's a lie...". Zavala already knew this before going in to say bye. Like, did our Guardian SAY NOTHING before she went in to spout off all high chair level? It felt like this a few other cutscenes seemed either edited in such a way that was not the original flow of the storyboard/script? Like maybe this scene was originally supposed to have a "living" Safiyah and Hakim in the house as we defended the homestead from the Fallen? THEN have Ikora show up and tell Zavala it's a lie (instead of after). THEN have him go in to say bye. As Zavala holds her hand to tell her 'Soon, Safiyah I'm Sorry", she turns to stone with the vision from the dissenter happens. Would have made FAR MORE SENSE.

Zavala was tempted. But in the end, he didn’t take the offer. Targe defied the Witness, died, and left Zavala more vulnerable to being Taken by the Witness. Targe’s sacrifce had good intentions, but Zavala was more susceptible to dying in that moment. He was lucky to survive. But, now even with Stasis, Zavala is more vulnerable. I don’t think he’ll die. But he may retire to mostly office work and politics-keeping the City walls standing, mediating at Coalition/Consensus meetings. While someone like Sloan may handle military operations for the Titans.

I legitimately don't understand what The Witness was trying to accomplish with temptations to the other Vanguard members. Like let's say that Crow and Zavala gave in and The Witness gave them what they wanted. It would have enacted the Final Shape and calcified everything, making the 'gifts' it bestowed on both of them pointless. And if we were not aware what the Final Shape was, this may have been a tempting offer but the fact is that we did know what the Final Shape was when they were being tempted so how is it even a temptation? Like, they would get approximately 2 seconds to actually enjoy what they were given to be immediately frozen forever and they knew that. In fact, this is further evidence by the fact that The Witness tempts us by specifically saying they will leave us out of the Final Shape. I feel I explained it poorly so I'll summarize it by simply saying how were Zavala and Crow even tempted knowing that what they were promised would be immediately undone by the Final Shape?

Stillness and calcification are not in literal sense. By that, it's meant that Witness picks the 'best moment of life' for people and makes them revel in this moment for the eternity. This is it's Final Shape.

I think while that wouldve been a neat concept it would be a bad send off for one of Lance's most iconic characters. I think most people were okay with the story that we got in TFS, and I don't think losing Zavala, Targe and Cayde in one DLC would be necessary. Making zavala a villain would be extremely controversial
