@@mattwc93 i think it's a response that can go either way, it can be dismissive or it can be like you said. usually i think he responds that way for the reason you mentioned, but sometimes i think it comes off as dismissive because the person asking the question was actually asking about something with deeper implications for example, i think destiny was asking more than what Dr. K answered, because his implication with the question was what's an appropriate response if you lack the information to help in the way they discussed OR you're not particularly close/intimate with that person. just to be clear: the answer that destiny provided seemed very specific and carries a lot of assumptions about the person in need of care; that destiny knows them, is very familiar with them, and has prior knowledge of interventions or 'pushes' to do something usually has positive results. i think destiny's question was actually something more like this: when do you know when they need help and how do you judge when it's appropriate to try and help them in a friendly capacity given the unknown quantities (such as not having prior knowledge of intervention being successful) i can take a guess as to what Dr. K would have answered had Destiny reframed the question in the way he wanted to ask, but we don't really know unless someone asks him i feel like a few of these types of questions popped up and were basically dismissed due to Destiny not wanting to take up too much time or get too deep into it, which is a shame because it could've been useful. i get that there was some time restraints though and there were obviously some questions where they did really dive deep so it's not that big an issue
@deensama7718
@deensama7718 3 жыл бұрын
also just to be clear i don't think the dismissal was anyones fault, i'm not applying a value judgement, i just think it's more like Dr. K can't read minds and so may have missed the deeper implications (or just didn't want to assume there were deeper implications, which is fair enough) and Destiny didn't feel it was important enough to continue press the issue for any reason, be it time restraints or just not being super invested in the question

For people who don't know, a close friend of Destiny killed himself when he was 19. This is something he's mentioned on his stream before; the suicide questions aren't necessarily coming from Reckful's death, on Destiny's end.
@SDot-tt8yf
@SDot-tt8yf 4 жыл бұрын
You should add that it was Destiny's best friend/the person that got him into streaming, and that the friend approached him with the question of suicide/whether he should go through with it, and Destiny essentially went "it's your body, your life, do whatever you want bro," and then his friend killed himself on the train tracks the next day and so Destiny has wrestled with this ethical dilemma ever since, even though he was not drastically devastated by his friends death. Destiny's friend was going to be in trouble over dealing weed essentially, and thought that his life was over for that amongst other things and so he chose suicide as the route to go, but Destiny now believes that his friend was being far too fatalistic/narrow in his thought process and could have thrived in the future, especially in this digital landscape that Destiny has made his living in. He's always been fairly open about it, surprised he didn't just tell the story on this stream. It isn't very long. Also in the past he's said he now hedges on intervention in such cases, even if it isn't a strong stance, just more of a it's "probably" the best course.

@@SDot-tt8yf after all you said I'm not surprised at all he didnt directly bring it up. I'm pretty sure his intention with this stream was to ask Dr.K questions rather as a 1-1 conversation rather than a interview. Nor did he want to be interviewed. So him not bringing it up seems intentional. He was not trying to be in the spotlight with this stream. He was making Dr. K the focal point cause of the knowledge he has. Instead of giving Dr. K something that would distract or make him want to focus more on destiny. Which led them in the direction they took the rest of the stream. Edit: I also get the feeling that Destiny took this approach to help better his view on the subject.

I think when Destiny asked Dr. K what his end goal is with HealthyGamer the best answer is that there is no end-goal because the goal changes based on what the world requires of us. As someone who has struggled with depression and is a big voluntary loner I can attest to when friends stop asking if I want to hang out did hurt. My childhood best friend from time to time would just show up at my appartment in his car with a bucket of KFC and would demand I sit in the car and would drive me out to the airport to watch plains and eat and it was immensely helpful to my mental state. If he just called and asked if I wanted to go I would have said no 80% of the time and just stayed inside and play so him just showing up and applying a little pressure forced me to get out of my head and do something.
@megeles

That's the kind of thing that could come off as a boundary violation to a lot of people. When you reject people (and saying no to plans over and over is a type of rejection) they will eventually get the message that you don't like them. Have you tried making plans with the people who used to call you? Have you tried putting effort into your relationships?

I think it may be helpful if Dr K distinguished between his understanding of karma, and what is generally understood about karma. It's like saying "that's because of a previous life" but actually meaning "that's because of things that happened before you were born". Using "a previous life" or "karma" as explanations, comes with the weight of the generally understanding of those words, which doesn't seem to be what Dr K. Actually means, and that meant that they were talking past each other a little bit. It would be like me saying "yeah, I believe in an afterlife" but actually meaning "my actions will influence the world once I'm gone". That's not the generally understanding of an afterlife, so that language would cause more confusion than clarity.

Dr. K, if you haven't already familiarized yourself with Sartre's existentialism I would suggest looking into it! Much of what you talk about in regards to Karma and Dharma seem to have some interesting overlap with Sartre's idea of "The Situation" that he pairs with the idea of a human being's freedom. The best I know is watch video's on Dr. K's channel. He has some dedicated video's but a lot of information is spread across the interviews he does with people. But one thing I can recommend is meditating and learning about how your own mind works in general. Sure it's valuable to learn about theoretical systems, but you still have to learn how to apply them to your own personal situation and a lot of the value is simply in having a tool for comparison to see where you fall within human diversity, which you can do by other means. To give an example: I once studied what kind of systems in gaming I find enjoyable. I recognized that in WoW whenever I always hit max level I started a character from scratch soon after. I found LoL and Super Smash Bros really enjoyable and I have been playing it for mány hours, because whenever I get bored of a character, I can switch to and learn a new character who makes it feel fresh, but I still improve in the game in general and can apply what I learned from one character to another. This is how I recognized I'm also a ball juggler: I'm not someone who can be succesful in dedicating myself to a single thing completely because I get bored and start something completely new. I'm most succesfull in systems where I can do something A for sometime, then switch to something different B which forces me to learn new things while still learning about a general system, after which I can switch back to A if I want because it feels fresh, now that I can learn more about it applying things I learned from B. Now I've been applying this to my music, where I can grab a different instrument or learn a new song or new style when I want while still becoming better at music, and also to my schoolwork which improved both my enjoyment and productivity in my activities.

@@fadence I'll try to break down the theoretical concept he's alluding to for you. When he acknowledges that he is someone that constantly jumps to a new thing, he's implying that he never finishes things. So the A-D "solution" is to acknowledge when you're getting "bored" and move on to the next activity. You just really need to focus on FINISHING things you start, while also not fighting your desire to move onto something "new". This means having a handful of clear goals you wish to bring to completion, but not fighting to swap between them. Simply beware of creating too many new goals, otherwise you'll end up dropping the balls you're juggling.

I guess I've been an addict of both opiates and videogames. I've been clean for 2.5 years after a few years heavily addicted to fent, and my video game addiction was years before that, playing games online 5-10hrs a day for multiple years. I don't really know where that would put me on any addiction spectrum, and at the time I never really thought of it like an addiction, but after going through my opiate addiction and listening to the psychology behind video game addiction I can see the parallels, especially when I neglected so much in my life while for gaming. Although, in my experience, opiate addiction is a lot more physical in nature. Sure, the psychological attachment is what keeps you doing the drugs, but eventually your body doesn't function properly without it. It feels important to make that distinction, because the road to recovery from each problem is going to be very different. All the best to anyone out there struggling with either problem. Change starts in small steps, then it's one foot in front of the other.

I feel like it is a serious mistake to say that science doesn't take anything from before you were born to be relevant in what's going on with you now, and considering the example given was behavioral economics, I think it's clear that this is the case. Becayse even psychology focuses a ton on childhood, but what determined how your childhood went? A huge part is your parents, and what determines how they are? Their childhood to a large extent. So then even Dr. K's own background shows him to be wrong. With medical science as well: why did you get the flu? Because the influenza virus is out there and existed long before you were born and continued propagating. Why do you have a genetic disorder? Because your parents had those genes, even before you were born. Why do you have a predisposition to schizophrenia? Same story. I'm happy to equate karma and determinism but determinism goes hand in hand with science.

I really respect Dr. K and his approach, but at some points in the discussion about Karma, he really feels more like he's trying to bend and twist science to justify their beliefs, which is something that's gotten very popular amongst religious people these days to keep up with the times. I'm not a karma expert, but don't they usually claim that in a previous life they were someone completely different, or even another creature sometimes? That's very different than your parents or genetics impacting your life, unless you start getting into some weird butterfly effect situation.

Isn't it down to the idea of the soul again? If it's a body with a soul in it then it's a "reused soul" put in a new body made with genetics, and it still is able to "coexist" with science. Of course, the idea of a soul is inherently unscientific, but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I've been in therapy a couple of times for years at a time, and neither time did I really get around to figuring out how I work. It was mostly about trying to treat certain issues in my life at the time. Figuring out me more would be good. I kinda feel like the study about mdma and psilocybin could be tied to the convo around ego and EQ. Maybe it's just because I'm tired, but the idea of hallucinating some being in that way, feels a lot like people are peering into their own psyche a bit. I imagine there's potential for great relief in finding some sense of understanding about your emotions and it seems like it wouldn't be unreasonable for people to characterize their emotions or ego in some way while on drugs.

If I am a leader of a corporation and someone comes to me for help with something that I do not understand, what do you think I will do? Will I tell them something that may not be right, or will I get the subject matter expert to help them? If im not familiar with helping someone on a professional level, I will still help them by advising them to seek professional help.

For that conversation at the end about psychedelic experiences having a high reporting rate of an experience with a higher being - the non-drug-induced psychotic break from reality I had a few years ago, I felt the presence of beings that I thought wanted to communicate with me. I remember specifically at one point feeling like... whatever they were "telling" me, I was responding with "variety is the spice of life" like that was the answer and I was heating something up in the microwave and it dinged, and I perceived that as like "ah! light bulb moment! I understand what you mean." I also felt like there was this interconnected system of beings throughout the world that could connect with each other and were like telepathically linked, and I kinda felt like, in that state, I was one of them. Wild shit. There was also a wide array of other shit I was thinking and ended up needing to be hospitalized for it, but it was an extremely fascinating experience, and I'm really glad I was able to have it, even though at the time, there was a lot that terrified me at the time and I scared my family. Anyways, I thought it might be something worth noting; idk if the beings people felt connected to while on psychedelics might be strictly linked to drugs... idk if my non-drug-induced experience was similar to what they experienced..... I'm curious about that, though.

I will say, it seemed almost as if Dr. K just took determinism and called it Karma. I remember having a similar view back in my earliest spiritual phase (I must have been around 12 if not younger). I tried to find comfort in knowing that everything either is right, or will correct itself into being right. I also tried to apply karma physical phenomena. You're home from school? Well, that's karma manifesting from the act of your moving home. Today, I don't need karma to find comfort with the world. But just to clarify, my main take here is that Dr. K actually is a determinist. He simply calls determinism Karma just like I called the act of objects/people moving, and ending in different locations as a result of moving, the manifestation of karma. This means you're right about there being miscommunications.

@@oOPPHOo Dr. K is not a hard determinist like Destiny. In one of his videos I saw, he talked to a guy who was depressed because he believed that determinism is true and free will doesn't exist and Dr. K responded with an example where if you decide to move your arm, the movement is determined but your decision to send a signal from your brain to your arm isn't. This to me sounds like a belief in free will and is probably the reason why he calls karma karma and not determinism. Calling it determinism would imply no free will.

@@janhradecky3141 It sure does sound that way, but it also sounds contrary to the beliefs stated in this conversation. ... Unless of course he believes that Karma is the result of the free will of not just ourselves, but also of others, which is very likely to be his belief. What bothers me about psychology and psychiatry (I guess mainly therapeutic work) is that I keep hearing about this supposed "training" that only a few people get. I just finished my second year in Uni studying psychology and I still feel like there's something shady about all of this. I've got no doubt that if you spend time talking to suicidal people you will eventually start to understand suicidality better, however this "training" that therapists allegedly get sounds like bullshit to me.

Maybe it's that you by yourself could probably figure everything out on your own about suicidality but it may not be fast as you have no reference whatsoever or what to look for... It sounds like using the suicidal patients as test subjects hoping you figure everything out before they go ahead and decide to actually kill themselves... The "training" may be whatever has been set on stone so even if you haven't yet reached complete understanding, you still know what to look for... Maybe? (I do not have the credibility to speak about this but I'm just bored right now so why not blabber on on another youtube comment)... Also, if you truly understand someone's reason to want to suicide, and what if you also feel that that person is living a life similar to yours... If you truly understand the problem without a solution, wouldn't you also fall prey to suicidality? Sure there may be a solution but what makes you so sure that you, another human being like the person who is suicidal would find the solution by yourself when he clearly couldn't... Idk just a bunch of random ideas in my head
