There is some truth to what you are saying but it is far more nuanced. Flat Earthers are not really any of the biggest names. Most people believe in a God. Most people believe in ghosts. Most people believe in nonsense or at least one conspiracy. Some were the butt of the jokes but people like Trump and Bernie were the most popular politicians. The "deep state" guy and the "establishment" guy. Everyone hated Hillary because of one conspiracy theory or another. Ghost shows were all the rage and still are. Ancient Aliens was on its fifth season. The Mandela effect was circulating the internet. People have always been conspiracy minded. You see it more because of social media. There are more influencers telling people exactly what they want to hear. The validation seeking and echo chambers let conspiracy theorists feel comfortable w/o any push back. Reddit and Facebook are huge echo chambers. Skeptics turned into populists. Even Joe Rogan was moving away from conspiracies and is now back.
